It's been a few weeks since our last #gardentour so it's time for an update. Today, we'll show you our newest flowerbed that we just started this year (2023). And show you what it looked like before we planted.
We only bought a few plants to go in this middle flower bed. The rest are plants (perennials and annuals) that we grew from seed and cuttings.
It's grown a lot this summer here in Denmark (Zone 8a), and we're excited to take you on a garden tour now and see how it keeps developing in the years to come. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

15:35 What a picturesque scene! I love hearing children play in the garden. If I may, I think planting a thin evergreen in the garden bed to the left would look splendid. Maybe an arborvitae?

Thank you for watching! Planting very close together helps us get that full cottage garden look - it also means that we have to move plants often when one overtakes another... but that's easy to do with perennials. Good luck seed hunting :)

Totally agree! And our lawn was just so wet most of the year. With gravel, we can at least walk outside without sliding in muddy grass.

I absolutely love y'alls flower garden on both sides of your path. Such beautiful flowers annuals and perennials. I subscribed. Amazing how those tiny seeds grow to be huge beautiful flower's. I plant zinnias seeds every year and save the seeds. I got zinnias planted in almost every flower garden's.❤

This video got me thinking about how exactly to store my seeds I collected this year (trying for the first time, I usually just purchase new plants but this is getting more and more expensive). Seems some seeds like the fridge, some room temp, moisture content is important as well as storing in paper so they don’t mold (I bought special little jars for this purpose boohoo!) Anyway, lovely informative video even for those of us in different climate zones. ❤

Do seed collecting! We store all of our seeds in paper coffee filters and keep them in our garden shed. For those needing cold, we sometimes use the freezer… but it’s easier for us to sow them in December and put them in the greenhouse (it’s not heated)… that way they go thru the temperature changes (cold, etc) without us having to work so hard. Cuttings, too! Those have been a great way for us to propagate and get plants to fill our spaces. I could go on and on about seed collecting 😂… but I’ll stop boring you now. Let me know if I can help tho.

Beautiful border. I really like your plants and have a lot of the same ones in my own garden. Interesting that the Argyranthemum is the Danish national flower. My home town Helston in Cornwall has Lily of the Valley and every 8th May which is called Flora Day, people attach it to their lapels and people dance through the streets and houses. I live in Cheshire now and really miss my home town. Your garden is stunning.

We're surprised, too. We looked back at May/June and it just wasn't as full as the other, older parts. But after several weeks of rain (normal for Danish summer), the plants really started to come out.

I keep chipping away at my lawn grass. I would love to have my garden similar to yours. The rain has been so bad this year my grass is sodden. I have brought one bed forward and made another bed and love having the extra room for more perennials and bushes!

Your garden looks incredible! I’m amazed this is its first year. Mine is on its second year and doesn’t look half as good. It’s all perennials and shrubs. I think I should consider including annuals. I also need to improve my soil. I live on a river and my soil is at least 90% sand. And before I torn it out to make room for beds, I had tired old turf grass that surly depleted the limited nutrients available in my sandy soil

Yes, for this middle flower bed, it's the first year... the others we've been working on since we moved to this house in 2018. Do try adding a few annuals... it's how we keep color and blooms throughout the whole spring/summer. When a perennial finishes (and if we're not letting it go to seed), we cut it back and add an annual to give that 'empty' spot some color. And you're right about the soil. An easy trick is to collect the leaves that fall on your property in the autumn and let them sit in plastic bags (we use big garbage bags). Then we add the leaves, almost like mulch, on top of our soil at the end of winter/start of spring. We also make compost all year with food waste, clippings, etc... and spread that at the end of the summer and again at the start of spring. It helps the soil for sure.

Sorry I’m so chatty today but as far as hand weeding from the walkway, I have found after years of using chemical herbicides and fighting torrential weeds in my walkways, I decided to hand weed this year. At first it is daunting but if you are diligent and stay with it, the amount of weeds drops about 90% and it’s not bad at all!

I will print and frame this for when I think it gets too much! haha But that's what we're thinking, too... and we'd like to not use chemicals if possible. It's a small space... so we can manage for sure :)

The salvia viridis (hope I spelled that right) looks so pretty. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that salvia before. The apricot cosmos is gorgeous as well. I planted a mix this year and they are pink and white. I really love the cosmos but they get huge here. My cosmos are currently five foot tall and they were supposed dwarf flowers lol

When you deadhead do you pitch the spent flowers into the soil instead of removing the recently spent flowers? How old are you guys? You are both energetic and agile with squatting and getting up easily.

Hi, Carol! First, thanks for saying that we seem agile and energetic! We'll take it as a huge compliment. haha. We're 46 and 41. As for deadheading, we toss the spent flowers into a bucket and then put them in our compost. If we didn't have a compost bin, we'd toss them on the ground for sure. Hope that helps :)

@@perennial-garden Shows how with it I am- I don’t know that show but will check it out! 🤔 YES, Biltmore at Christmas- oh my goodness it’s amazing but then I’ve been in August and the gardens are breathtaking too!! I want to visit during tulip time one year as well. I think there is a Hallmark movie coming this Christmas season that was filmed at Biltmore, which will be fun to look out for (do you get Hallmark Channel there?). Gardening is my summer obsession and Christmas decorating is my off season obsession I guess one could say. Do you guys do much in Denmark for Christmas? I have a new house this year so my mind is spinning with ideas for inside and out and I’m thinking of nine trees!? 😳 We will see if my energy holds out for that. Not to mention new build equals tons of new beds and exciting plants and designs, which has been my Summer and I still have a long way to go but lots of plans so watching gardeners like you guys inspires me and keeps me excited!!

@@loribullis6238 9 trees?! it would be incredible for sure :). In Denmark, Christmas is much 'quieter' than in the USA... it's very dark because of the long nights... so we do a lot with candles. And only live trees... it's very hard to find a fake tree here. But we loveeeee watching the American shows like (i forget the name) Christmas Light Fight or something like that... where the houses had to decorate and win. Super over the top....but equally magical :)

haha! They do! It's a festival called Sankt Hans Festival... it's basically like Mid Summer (for the Swedes). Long story short... some villages still burn 'fake' witches -- the belief in the old days was that doing so kept evil spirits away. OH... and they believed that the witches then flew off to Germany to live there! haha.
