It's September and time for another garden tour of what's growing here in our garden in Fredericia, Denmark (zone 8a).
We've had a lot of rain and wind these past several days... but despite the weather (and the autumn weather coming in), we've still got a lot of perennials in flower. From one solo Foxglove to Painted Sage still showing out with pinks and blues, there's plenty of color and texture to finish the season off with a bang.
And we've got a brand new garden toy (a tool, actually) that helps us keep weeds out of our gravel path - a weed burner. Stick around to watch that in action and see just how quickly it burns weeds.
Here are some of the perennials and garden plants that we'll show on this tour of the garden:
0:46 Rudbeckia hirta
0:53 Salvia viridis
1:09 Blue delphinium
2:18 Dahlias
3:42 Setaria italica 'Red Jewel'
4:38 Sanguisorba
5:23 Gaillardia (Blanket Flowers)
6:29 Buddleja (Butterfly Candy)
7:15 Sedum
7:55 Delphinium seeds
8:30 Thalictrum delavayi
9:15 Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate'
9:46 Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan)
10:22 Brunnera (Jack Frost)
10:44 Polemonium
10:53 Astrantia
11:56 Liatris seeds
12:13 Cola plant
12:34 Echinacea
12:45 Crocosmia
13:01 Phlomis
13:42 Sedum
14:04 Aquilegia seeds
14:14 Helenium
14:26 Anemone hupehensis
15:15 Chelone

Just wow! You still have so much colour in your garden - my garden is looking a little dark as I mostly have salvia amistad and verbena in flower (I'm in the south of the UK), something I need to rectify next year. Sadly we have had lots of rain and very strong winds so my garden has been rather battered! So pleased we will be still getting videos although I shall miss the garden tours. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden!

We're on the east coast and totally understand the wind and rain... our first big storm just hit yesterday. sigh. And great with a plan to add brighter colors next year! We went with a lot of yellow for that reason, too. With the days getting shorter, those bright yellows make a difference to the whole feel of the space.

My lupine also really struggled with aphid's last season. I am in zone 4b Wisconsin and had to cut my lupine all the way back to the ground mid-summer. After cutting them back, I sprayed the crown of the plants with neem oil. Luckily, my plants were able to fully rebound and put on some fresh growth before the end of the season. Hopefully this mild winter doesn't result in another big aphid outbreak.

I absolutely love your garden! It's gorgeous! Denmark is beautiful! A lot different than South Texas, we pretty much garden year-round here. Summer is kinda like winter here, in the sense that everyone pretty much stays indoors because of the heat. Get a lot of over 100 days here, fall, and what you probably wouldn't call winter here are when everyone ventures out. I guess kind of the reward of being zone 9a

A huge hello from Denmark to South Texas! I bet it's a lot different indeed... we have over 250 days of rain here, too. That makes it really green...but really damp and cold most of the year. Rhizomatous plants like anemone and astrania: the former I would stick in a planter or it will run everywhere in a few years. There is a granule called Preen, made from corn gluten, that is used to suppress germination of weeds. It is a lifesaver for gravel/pebble pathways and inside all beds. I only use it once annually after annuals are planted. Should be something similar in Denmark I imagine.

You didn't like that white Dahlia😜❓❓ cummon give it to me!! I would love to grow it from seeds too. I love it ❤ Did you know ❓ Pompom Dahlias are better keeping as cut flowers . If you wanted to cut other types for the vase you might want to immerse the cut stalk in hot water for 10 minutes you get these a little longer in the vase ... M m

Nice tour! The Persicaria looks really good. Have you grown Gaillardia ‘Arizona red’? I think it would look great in your garden.

Thanks for watching! And you know... we have a red Gaillardia... I wonder if it is an Arizona Red. I'll make sure to find out! But if not... 100% agree that they would look great here. And it would break up some of the yellow (which we have a lot of).

If the Houttuynia reverts to green, you will have rhizomes absolutely everywhere and it will be impossible to get rid of. I am in the US state North Carolina.

It’s a pain for sure! Are you still finding it in your garden? It’s here and there in ours - should take several years to get it out completely (if ever!)

@@perennial-garden Yes, I have it everywhere in my garden, even far from where I planted the original variegated form about 25 years ago. What I have now is entirely green and about 20 inches tall. It does have a pretty white flower in mid spring but its growth will quickly smother anything near it. It does not like the cold, so it will die back completely, however it will return with full coverage of a planted bed. Whenever I dig a place for a new plant I always find a thick mat of white rhizomes a little bit smaller than the diameter of a pencil and I remove and bag for trash all that I see. I think the method for removal will have to be thorough removal of each stalk as it emerges in the spring. I have about 1/4 of an acre of it now. Its sale is prohibited in many parts of the US. One could always try to paint each cut stem with an herbicide but I do not use that method. Please begin a regime to remove all that you see in your garden and please don't give it to others.

@@paulacothren3591 Oh wow! And you're right... from what we've learned, only a chemical will get rid of it, but that's not what we want in our ground either. We keep digging it up every time we see a tiny bit and keep those areas of the garden monitored. It doesn't like the cold... so hopefully our cold winters will keep doing some damage on it. Although, I'm sure it's a long battle (like you have!). My goodness. Thanks for sharing tho! Hope we both get a garden free of it soon.

Oh my goodness! We're convinced 😳. We're taking out this autumn and keeping it only in pots (the leaves are just too pretty to not keep)...but you're right...it's slowly popping up in places that we just want it. Hope you get it out of yours, too!

Please don't worry about white or green fly there is an old saying how do I get ladybirds 🐞 into my garden bring in the green and white fly loppens are well noted for white fly especially the first year the white fly helps because the flower that produce a sticky kind of sauger goopy that the white fly eat they don't really harm the plant but it does bring in the predators but my God you're grapes 🍇

Thanks for joining us 🥰. Ours is Sanguisorba Pink Brushes - is that what you’re growing, too? We’ve planted it in just “normal” soil in our garden, but we’ve been working the soil with compost for years (once in autumn and once in spring). We didn’t fertilize this past season. We did have to water a lot this summer as Denmark had a big drought and hotter-than-normal weather.

@perennial-garden Maybe my soil got too dry as we had no rain between may and July here in S, England. My variety is S. Obtusa. I am also growing S. Tanya, S. Canadensis Alba and S. Pink Elephant. I simply adore them. I mulch my garden every spring with well rotted horase manure. I garden on clay

Hello! Can you please tell me more about Denmark being a social state? How is it in every aspect? Very curious thank you!
@perennial-garden
@perennial-garden 10 ай бұрын
We love the social system here. There's free education, universal health care, etc. We also are blessed with 5 weeks paid vacation (6 weeks in most companies), too. All of this comes with very high taxes, however. But... to have a healthy, 'equal and fair' society, it's worth it. Of course there are problems, too. ...but for the most part, we're very thankful for the system, especially because we have a child.
