As a spearo from the Mediterranean, this is unusual because of the scuba tanks, but I believe it’s way more ethic and less damaging compared to the disasters that even professional fishermen do here with nets, in the sea. Just one note, at first I thought the shot immediately knocked out the AJs but I realised for some it didn’t, maybe a deep stab with the knife whenever possible? Enjoy the ocean, dive safe

Hey Buio, thanks you for your comments. I appreciate them. It's def a "green" way yo commercial fish compared to other methodologies. No by catch, no unwanted or undersized small fish caught and discarded. No damage from nets, longlines, traps, etc... Usually I PH AJ's and it's almost always instantly fatal. Is it just me, but I've noticed (from watching spearfishing channels) that the fish are a lot less wary of spear fishers at deeper depths?
@danmacmahon39733 жыл бұрын
NB46820, No that's probably true a lot of the time. Not too many people dive out there and I'm sure a lot of those fish have never seen a diver before. That is somewhat balanced out by the 3-4 minute bottom time and just the sheer distance off shore they are. But I def agree with you, on average, the deeper, the less wary. Best, Dan

@@danmacmahon3973 not really,, it's the pressure of deeper depths that make them looks like unwary of their sorounding,, It's very hard to move under deeper water because of chemical composition in living animals such o2 and h2,, because tendency is to bring them up to surface which will kill them,, but they need it to stay alive,,they have swim bladder that counter that reaction,, but fish have to use h2o for that swim bladder to function correctly it's a long process in their system that's why they'd rather be move slowly and looking like unwary,, to save energy,, but when it's needed they can move fast also,, but not for a very long time,, ( have you noticed a fish burst?)😀 It's short, because of that,, and my point is coming in,😀😂 shooting the fish in the head will not kill them fast , as most animal and human are most likely to die,, it will only shutdown thier vision and tail function,,(to swim),, it means they're still feeling pain,, the best way is to bring Them up to the surface as fast as you can after you shoot them,, because their body will react and move fast,, wasting o2 and h2,, making the swim bladder conserves it's contents and the gills will still process the h2o and o2 convertibg and eventually shut thier nervous system,, that is why if you bring the fish to the surface quickly they've bloated gut!!😀 It's called compressed air in their system,, and it'll kill them in more humane way,,,. @danmacmahon39733 жыл бұрын

Appreciate the comments. First time I’ve ever heard mention of “properly weighted gun” other than with regard to muzzle flip. What exactly were you referring to when you said that? Thanks!
@danmacmahon39733 жыл бұрын
Alan, on a free diving gun, most prefer it to float when there's no spear in it. On a Scuba gun, most prefer it to sink when "Spearless" so it doesn't float to the surface. I like to weight the gun on the very butt end to make the butt sit on the bottom while the front floats up at a 45 or so degree angel to make it easy to find if you've tossed it down with no spears in it. I am not a fan of filling the handle with melted lead as it puts the added weight where your hand holds the gun. Weighting it with a piece of stainless on the very butt end helps with the overall leverage of the guns weight on your wrist. So putting the weight there, makes the gun sink and reduces the actual weight on your wrist, a def win win. I hope that helps! Best, Dan

I have always felt powerheads are the safest most humane way to spearfish. The sharks don't move in because of the BOOM.. and the fish that are harvested never hear it. We mostly used 357 but I have several different ones. I don't have any 7.62x54 That's the equivalent of a 30-06 Ha that's a BLAST

@danmacmahon39733 жыл бұрын
Hey ave k, they're a machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. Utilizes the spear point as a firing pin. Commonly called a "slip on" power head. Usually used for personal protection or for taking large fish in deep water. Best, Dan

I'm SE Fla diver and amazed at the clarity of the water for the depth, when I boat over on the west coast it always seemed more silt-y and more tannon in the water, than east coast. but my videos aren't as clear, in less depth. also, its Sooooo flat on the surface... jelly.

@@danmacmahon3973 Oh, so its not a seasonal thing? more of a wind/front? on east coast, Nov-April its a lot cleaner due to lack of rain/runoff. non rainy season you can see the bottom from 10-20' but we get about a 2' brown/brackish water on the surface you can't see thru after june. but north of miami, most of the diving is within 2-3 miles of the shore.

The Powerhead he makes for his team . He has a local machine shop make the blank aluminum casings , and he adds the rest . He chose to use a Russian military rifle round ( 7.62x54R ) and it puts out the explosive power he needs to kill the bigger fish , or for protection . That cartridge can be purchased on-line in already sealed primers and bullets to protect against moisture , and has plenty of power to still work fine in deeper water .

Thanks David, I appreciate your comments. As far as the PH's go, I have the aluminum casing's made by a machine shop and do the rest myself. I think Speargods.com carries something really similar for retail sale. Best, Dan

Thanks Jared, I really like spearing those Gags at a good distance while free shafting, knocking them azz over teakettle never gets old. Yes, we have a 1000 pound commercial trip limit on AJ's in the GOM. Parasites (worms) are hardly ever a problem with our Jacks, it's rare to see one in them. Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
