Midge asked me to play synthesisers on "do they know it's Christmas" and I said that is stupid because they're Muslims and you're being rude by asking them about Christmas as s though they're Christians and idiots. He said, "Oh well, please yourself."

I think someone needs to clarify that, when Midge says the video changed the world forever and 'every band wanted a video', several videos promoting songs had already been the root of the song's chart success by this time. I remember watching Top Of The Pops week after week and seeing Rod Stewart at No.1 miming 'Sailing', wind blowing through his air, while on a ship leaving the harbour....or indeed, week after week of the four heads of Queen grouped together, gazing upwards, miming Bohemian Rhapsody in their classic promo video. Of course we can go back even further in time but those videos DEFINITELY got mass broadcast and mass sales to get them to No. 1 as a result. In fact, just solely referring to No.1 records....even Benny Hill's "Fastest Milkman In The West"....1971? I must've been about five years old....week after week of that video of Benny dressed as a milkman, driving a milk cart, miming the song. I never ever saw Benny appear on anything and sing it in the flesh. It got to No.1 with the direct help of that video every week being shown on Top Of The Pops. I think what Midge REALLY means is that the STYLE of the video changed the world forever. The Police's "Walking On The Moon", released prior to Vienna, got to No.1 with the band filmed miming to it standing next to the boosters of a space rocket....that was pretty escapist and looked expensive....but I'd say, ARGUABLY (still not whollly sure), Vienna was the first to present a song with a cinematic feel, a sense of narrative, an elaborate costume design and 'exotic' locations. Maybe?!? Still got my doubts. We have to be careful reinventing history. BBC Four documentaries have a terrible habit of it. I was there for all of these things in the 70s and often I find myself disagreeing with the retelling of events....like here with Midge! Sorry Midge!

Who? Midge? He's a musical god. I first heard Ultravox when I bought Lament in 84 (mostly because of the cover I have to admit..) and I've never looked back since. I remember reading Vonnegut and other sci-fi books with that tape on repeat for hours.

Midge might have kickstarted the whole music video scene of the 80s, with MTV, MuchMusic, and European equivalents. Plus he started together with Bob Geldof from Pink Floyd, the Live Aid thing. So yeah, pretty historical. What an impact.
@Spookieham5 жыл бұрын
Midge has never really received enough public recognition for his work over the decades. That prick Geldof took all the credit for Live Aid despite Midge working his arse off to make it happen and doing most of the work.
@a.tanner85245 жыл бұрын
Graeme Hill That’s often the way in life isn’t it? The people who do the most work often go unappreciated. Doesn’t really matter though. Those who need to know, know.

Geldof just used to look so good and romantic. It was his strong point. Midge looked good too but not so impressive.

@Nightdare4 жыл бұрын
@@dynjarren8355 And let's be real, most bands/artists that cooperated did it for the exposure It's also wasn't possible to say "no" since that would be career suicide I actually love the fact Queen screwed over the Boomtown Rats timetable at Live Aid (and performance by virtue of blowing any act following Queen -in this case the Rats) because Geldof "signed them up" without them being asked
@TheGodParticle4 жыл бұрын
Well said, I read midge ure's biography, he mentioned that bob kept interfering with the recording of the song, band aid. and things worked better when he wasn't around. personally I think Geldof is a over rated tosser.

Wait, did Midge just say he started a video thing? I thought The Beatles did it in 1965 :).
@marguskiis77115 жыл бұрын
1981 was another restart. First was early 1967 when Beatles made "Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane" surreal promo films to avoid TV studio performances. They had made similar promo clips years before, but those did not have following. But 1967 the first psychedelic promo video/film boom started. Numerous bands started to make those (Procol Harum, The Troggs, The Rolling Stones etc). The first boom waned about 1969 -- 1970 due the fall of psycedelic music and "new honesty" era.
@IztokGolob-Naklo5 жыл бұрын

He wasn't claiming it to be the "first pop video" (it definitely wasn't). There were many, many videos before Ultravox's "Vienna". He was stating that by 1981, with the release of the the video for "Vienna", which had a narrative and was more artsy and had somewhat of a budget, it propelled other artists of the era to want to do the same.

I’m not qualified to argue with the mighty Midge but lots of acts had never appeared on TOTP throughout its history up to 1980 , relying on “ Promos “ instead. Folks as diverse as Elvis and unknown Pink Floyd in 1967.In my humble opinion, the “ Bohemian Rhapsody was the first pop video “ is total and utter bollocks . Unless the films promoting “ whiter shade of pale “ or “ Arnold layne “ we’re actually just advertising for Paisley shirts and top hats 🏴😇❤️

Vienna was a good video but it wasn’t the first or as pivotal as he claims. Bohemian Rhapsody came five years earlier.

Christ, all these post-vocalic R sounds are unbearable. Thank common bloody sense that sound is dying out now. And this so-called new theme was horrible and contained no actual musical note at all. Everyone remembers the 70s theme coz it was the definitive classic, it was an institutional arrogance ever to drop it.
