Please turn off the background music. It is beyond me why youtube content creators think it is important or cool to play music over their voice. We came to hear you not fight the music, which quickly becomes annoying. Many folks have hearing difficulties and the background music ruins and otherwise excellent presentation.

#1, THANK YOU!!! After getting my GMRS license I just purchased two sets (4 total) of the Retivis Radios a week ago from Amazon, and have been using them off roading with my family. We’ve also gotten crystal clear 1 mile line of sight communication at the Big Bend National Park Balance Rock Trail, Black Gap Pass, and other locations. So far, they’ve run for 10 to 12 hours with intermittent use. I wish the instructions were more detailed, and I’d like to get more familiar of the different features, but overall this is an Excellent piece of equipment at a reasonable price! 😁👍😁

Just a point to note - “privacy code or channels” do not make the conversations “private “. DCS and CTCSS codes and tones are are generally speaking - codes that un-squelch the radio. If both radios are sent to same code - you will hear the transmission on your radio if set the same way. If there is no code you or the code is different on your radio will not hear the transmission but you are still on the air and others can hear the conversation. Yeah, kind of geeky but have heard a lot of folks that believe it’s a private channel; still a party line. For what it’s worth - Jim

Oh dude, no worries, didn't take it that way. But, you're not wrong that given the layman's perspective of the video, I should've said that. Yeah, most people would see or hear "privacy codes" and assume that.

Appreciate the video! Looks like the Retevis wins hands down. USB, battery life and ease of use push it over the edge im ny opinion. Not to mention sound quality. The off-road club I belong to here in So Cal switched from CB to Ham radios several years ago (my suggestion at the time, so we didn’t have to listen to Bubba in Alabama!), and that’s what my mobile unit is. About 6 months ago, I decided to purchase a GMRS handheld, just in case I end up on a run with someone that uses one instead of a Ham. I bought a Wouxun KG-905G based on other reviews on KZfaq. It seems to be a pretty stout unit, very well built, and I’d say the menu is somewhere in between the Midland and the Retevis, as far as simplicity goes. But I’ve yet to actually use it! I’m sure it will come in handy some day...

I know you don't wana nerd out. If you care about range just get a mobile with an external antenna. I will say be careful with midland as half of their mobiles are narrowband only amd wont play nice with wide radios...silly midland. Anyway external antenna will net you huge gains plus the better mibiles have 5-10x the power, while that's not 5-10x the range you will get a solid double or more going mobile mount.

My concern is availability of the repeater function. I have several repeaters in my area and wanted the use of those if needed in an emergency. I was snookered by Midland's 50 channel advertisement. Buyer beware.

Any idea how to get retevis RB17P to talk to Rugged GMR2?
@ggg4runner
@ggg4runner 11 ай бұрын
If you disable all privacy codes (CTCSS/DCS codes) on both radios they should talk to each other just fine on standard GMRS channels. If you want to get "privacy codes" working then you'd have to refer to both manuals. Look up the actual CTCSS/DCS frequency/code for one of the radios that is already set to privacy code "X" and then find the corresponding proprietary "privacy code number" for the same CTCSS/DCS frequency/code in the other radio's manual and set it.

I think I screwed something up. I reset the ch qt/DCS
@ggg4runner
@ggg4runner 11 ай бұрын
So, what I did to get the Retevis talking to Midlands is I went through each channel and got rid of any DCS/CTCSS codes so that all channels were just standard GMRS channels and then got both radios on the same DCS/CTCSS codes. I think there's a reset to factory defaults on the Retevis anyways so you can't really screw up anything that bad.
@ggg4runner
@ggg4runner 11 ай бұрын
@HM-vu9zw if both "C-CDC" and "T-CDC" are set to "OFF" then that channel does not have any privacy codes. If you still can't talk to your Rugged radio then it's a setting on that Rugged radio. To change the "C-CDC" and "T-CDC" on the Retevis click that little round button on the left side (below the PTT button) to scroll through code types and the up/down to change actual codes. Check this for more info: www.twowayradiocommunity.com/adjust-ctcss-dcs-codes-rb17p/
