In this vid I go over the basic operations of the GXT1000 handheld radio from Midland. I also do a little range test to see how many miles I get from my house at distance. These are GMRS radios and do require an FCC license (no test required). Easy to get the license and gives you better range than the bubble pack FRS radios you see. It also picks up NOAA Weather channels!

Anytime you operate any sort of radio transmitter on board any ship you must have the permission of the captain. It is possible these radios can interfere with shipboard electronics gear.

@@donalderickson-si8ww I had mentioned it to a ship officer after reading an above comment. They told me to not use a couple channels. I believe it was 9, 16, and 19. I think they said those are reserved for coast guards, ship to ship monitoring, distressed ships and rescue, and something else. They did say I can go on to those channels however to avoid talking over them.

Midland has GMRS mobile radios that are intended to be installed in your vehicle just like any other mobile two way radio. Those radios go up to 40-50 watts. GMRS repeaters can also be had for increased range.

Some people assume that the so-called “privacy codes” keep your coms private. They just prevent you from hearing coms from others on the same frequency who aren’t using the code. Your coms can still be heard by frequency sitters who don’t have a code set.

FRS is 2 watts max, attached antenna so handhelds, 22 channels. Short range. GMRS is up to 5 watt handhelds, same 22 channels...plus....up to 50 watts units with detachable antenna (more range!) and 8 more channels as inputs to repeaters. So....if you just need a handheld then an FRS radio is fine to reach a mile to about 5. That’s the simple overview IMHO.

It’s kind of frustrating that Midland advertises these as the “highest power handheld” and 5W and all... but the official FCC docs state they’re only 2.5W. The old MXT1000 was rated at 5W.
@TheRealCobraBurnout
@TheRealCobraBurnout 4 жыл бұрын
3.07 watts when I looked it up on the FCC site. I'm not a GURU on the testing but there is probably some loss between radio power and what it can transmit. Still, I'd like to see the full 5w rated by FCC.

How does the boom headset work? Have you tried it? Is there a hands-free two-way operation or is the PTT button required always. I noticed the Call Lock button, what does that do?

I haven't used the headsets. The lock button just locks out the buttons from accidental presses. So you can throw it in a pocket or backpack I suppose. I haven't really needed to use that feature.

I looked up 2-way radios after an episode of Fear The Walking Dead and all i get are radio videos playing on my KZfaq. It makes me wanna get one or two, preferably a 5 watt GMRS. I don't leave the house much with covid around (Los Angeles was hit hard), so don't know where I'd use them, but still want 🤷🏽‍♂️. I do wonder why they don't implement USB-C cables to charge instead of the cradles and other old cables. They're everywhere now and fast charge all types of devices. Ps. Cool video, man. Appreciate the good work, I'm still learning.

Can I avoid the need for a license if I use it only on the low power channels. It would be nice to have the high power just as a back for emergencies. I understand a person can use high power in an emergency without a license. Let me know if my understanding is correct?

It will have a little tiny "H" top right of the channel number. These radio's are pushing a measured 3.07 watts as tested on the FCC website. Radio has 3 power level settings. To select the Hi power level on channels 1-7, 15-33 and 38-50, press the MENU button until a "Pr" icon will appear blinking on the display. then press the up down buttons to select H (for Hi) confirm by pressing the PTT button. You can't change the settings for channels 8-14 and 34-37 as they are set to Low power per FCC regulations.

Hi Friend. Yes! Here is the latest from the FCC: §95.567 FRS transmit power. Each FRS transmitter type must be designed such that the effective radiated power (ERP) on channels 8 through 14 does not exceed 0.5 Watts and the ERP on channels 1 through 7 and 15 through 22 does not exceed 2.0 Watts. www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=1e518958eb8bd468fe2b741981a29b32&mc=true&node=pt47.5.95&rgn=div5#sp47.5.95.b Please note: The radios in this vid are GMRS radios. No. Well, their maybe a battery charger out there that just charges the batteries when removed from the radio but I haven't looked. Its the main knock I have against these radios. They need an update to allow for USB style charging.

Midland has great ideas but always manages to drop the ball, somewhere. I believe these radios use a 700 mAh battery, which will not give a lot of high power xmit and use between charges. Something rated at 5W, orveven 2.5W should have a battery truthfully rated at no less than 3X the 700 mAh, or around 2100 mAh, to give any realistic life between charges.

How come you say it’s power is 2 1/2 watts when all material from midland and from testing labs say 5watts ? 5 watts The Midland GXT-1050 is an amazing 5 watts of power, providing a range of up to 36 miles. Designed and created with the hunter in mind, the GXT-1050 has incorporated a "Mossy Oak" camouflage design. The GXT-1050 is water resistant, and durable.

You take the FCC ID (FCC ID: MMAGXT1050G) on the back of the radio and look up the FCC testing and certification. it shows 2.5w on the main page. There is a test in there that shows 2.85w. fccid.io/MMAGXT1050G I don't know if Midland limits the power output on purpose based on battery or if that is the true testing numbers. Same with range. Range is never what is listed. For any radio its based on line of sight and best possible power output, etc.

2.5W... Really?! That’s borderline FRS at half the watts of true 5W channel range. IMO there have to better options at 5w out there (2.5W is barely half of the 5W limit) if you’re using GMRS and paid the FCC fee then don’t waste your money on anything under 5w or just get an FRS.
