STORYLINE:
Amid jubilant celebrations Poland became part of an enlarged European Union at midnight (2200GMT) on Friday, one of ten nations to join the enlarged bloc.
Crowds gathered in Warsaw's Pilsudski Square to listen to a classical concert and at the clock turned to midnight Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski raised the flag of the European Union whilst fireworks exploded in the sky.
Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus and Malta also joined the EU on Saturday, taking the bloc's membership to 25.
Celebrations are being held in towns and cities across Europe.
But Friday's celebrations were tempered by fears in the newcomer nations of steep price increases for consumer goods, and worries in the EU's 15 core member states of a flood of immigrants as national borders gradually disappear.
