John Goodman's character supposedly worked for the satellite company mentioned in Cloverfield.

Here's my two cent theory on this movie and Cloverfield being connected. John Goodman in this movie mentions how the invasion comes in phases. First is wipe out the population centers, and then scout for survivors. I think that the Monster in the first movie was their means of wiping out Population, like their version of an Atomic Bomb and then we see the Scout ships in this which seem to be some Biological and Technological mix. Which might mean that these aliens can fuck with their genetics in a way that makes them weapons. Now that we kinda know what this Anthology is gonna be about I wonder how they surprise us next.

John Goodman is more like Anne Wilkes from Misery.

It wasn't a pure marketing decision to place this film in the Cloverfield universe, but marketability did play a part. There are actually several small Easter eggs in the film connecting it to Cloverfield, but it was never intended to be a sequel - hence the title not being "Cloverfield 2".

+Stoned Gremlin Productions If I remember correctly, I think there was an article that said for a long time this movie wasn't connected to Cloverfield and was called something different, but JJ Abrams took over at the last minute (it might of had something to do with funding or something) and decided to connect it to Cloverfield at the last minute.

*SPOILERS* This movie is at least connected to Super 8, because the gas stations are the same. Also, they talk about taking back the seaboard, which is where the first monster came from. My theory is that the alien from the first one was a downed ship from years back that got released by the Slusho company, and it beaconed back for reinforcements. If this is it's own movie, I have an entire different theory that John Goodman was a rogue alien that's been collecting female specimens. His voice at the end sounds...oddly demonic.

Someone probably mentioned this already, but apparently one of the tie-ins is that John Goodman's character worked with satelites. If you've seen the ending scene in Cloverfield, you'd get why that's important.

I was surprised by how good this movie was, and all of the actors did a great job. I wasn't entirely crazy with the last 10 minutes but before then it was a great and Goodman was amazing

SPOILERS: Honestly, going into this film with only the first trailer as my knowledge was really an experience. I saw it in IMAX and holy crap, I left that place feeling unsettled and claustrophobic (which wasn't helped by gas mask cam in the end). But honestly, the one thing I ended up thinking after I got time to contemplate was that this was legitimately just grown up Coraline. Everything from the trapped in a small world big enough for the Beldam, to the comic relief character getting offed and inspiring the full escape of the main, to the fact that John Goodman loses his hand as he desperately begs the main to stay as they finally get away. I'm not complaining, it's just that the similarities to my favorite animated film is pretty uncanny.

Apparently for the original Cloverfield, they changed the Statue of Liberty head because even though it was to scale, test audiences said it looked too small.

The marketing for this movie really worked for me, personally. It's a mystery film, and a part of the mystery is why the film is called Cloverfield. I mean, I know that's kind of obvious since it almost certainly means there are aliens, but I still found it interesting. A part of me thought that it all might be a huge fake-out and there are no aliens at all. Or maybe there could have been some kind of weird, abstract connection to the first film.

I'm also happy you enjoyed Cloverfield (the first) That's the only "found footage" type movie that feels like found footage. With the shakey came- the fact that it doesn't look like a professional made it (like Paranormal Activity and shit)

Apparently John Goodman's character was a satellite guy, and the satellite that fell into the ocean at the end of Cloverfield is what woke up the monster. That's the only connection I've heard anyone make.

I just finished watching this movie a few hours ago and I wish I could've watched this with Brad, I loved it, I loved the frist movie and I see a lot of "how is this tied in with the first movie?" after seeing it I was wonder how did you not see it? the last 20 min of the movie is Cloverfield, like just what I wanted to see, these aliens are clearly part of what happened in the first movie

Don't blame JJ Abrams for Lost, he was barely involved in it.

I do not mind an anthology series, but I wish he would say that this was going to be an anthology series instead of saying that this movie is a "blood relative" of Cloverfield. That really pissed off a lot of people thinking that this was going to answer more questions about the monster or had the mother of the monster in this film only to find out that there wasn't any. He did say that there is something bigger planned that he has in mind and people are saying that JJ's next movie, God Particle, is going to be Cloverfield 3 and it will answer most of the questions as to why these events took place. As for the ARG, the ARG many people find is always more interesting than the movie itself and wish that the ARG were the movies instead of what we originally got. I like Cloverfield, I even have the Hasbro figure of the monster, I just don't think I want to sit through an hour and a half movie just to be disappointed that there was no monster. Now, if the third movie turns out to be a versus movie between the Cloverfield monster and these aliens, then I would absolutely watch this.

I've never seen a film in IMAX. The closest thing in my area is a "Big D" theater, which is what happens when you want to copy IMAX but have no idea what you're doing.

I had the same thoughts that this had to do with Cloverfield, but after seeing the trailer & hearing John Goodman talk about it being an attack & chemical warfare & stuff, I kinda dismissed it. But I still wanted to really see it because of his performance in the trailer itself

Zombie apocalypse plans are stupid anyways because zombies violate several laws of physics. You might as well plan for a vampire apocalypse.

So as Cloverfield is apparently now a franchise, I'm guessing it's going to become like the Godzilla franchise if every movie was a Horror film.

I was a little skeptical, but I guess I could go see it...right after I see Zootopia...and Batman v Superman...and Captain Ameri-you know what? I'll see it on blu-ray.
