I went to High school in northeastern Ohio, in a very small city with almost no Chinese population, and yes, we had a Chinese language class, taught by an old white lady, and I took it. The other languages offered were Spanish, French, Latin, and German. Our town's population is heavy with people of Greek and Italian descent. They hired those teachers based on the fact that they spoke another language. They didn't care which language.

Bad movies are so fun to experience in a packed theater. My friends and I saw the Grudge 2 and the theater was so full that we had to sit in the back corner huddled together. The whole audience was laughing their asses off at the film. It was one of my favorite filmgoing experiences.

Um, I grew up in a village in southern Ohio, like the population was a bit over 400 I think. We had a shitty small public school and yeah, Chinese classes were not a thing for us. We didn't even have the choice of two "foreign" languages. We had Spanish, that was it for a while. But then the Spanish teacher left. So, they hired a sign language teacher and that's now their only language class option. It was and is extremely white with no nearby Chinese population. I think I remember their being an Asian kid in our class for like a week but then he moved away. I also remember everyone being really racist to him. So...yeah, it might be different in other parts of Ohio though.

I live so close to the Canadian border that we get commercials for places in Montreal on local TV. We had French and Spanish, I passed only one year of each, because the first year of French was Canadian French and the second year was Parisian French; then the same with Spanish first year Mexican Spanish, then Spain Spanish, they are different enough that it would be like an English course that was California Surfer the first year and then Elizabethan English the second year.

One thing i wanna say as an aussie, I went to three schools and in Primary School they had Italian which I guess made sense as lots of Italian's lived near us (in fact when we did our renovation the comapny were almost all living on our street and it was an extended family of Italians), however in my second school it was grad 3-12 (don't ask why it started at grade 3, it just did, and i was there from year 5 to year 9 and we did Japanese, now we had Asian kids, but they were almost all Vietnamese and Thai, when I changed schools to my final school it also had Japanese and it was Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese and Cambodian kids, in fact I met my first Japanese descended friend when I was like 22, and they didn't speak any Japanese nor knew many Japanese people, so I think language at school is just chosen for whatever reason they come up with.

I like the reviews where you guys have fun ridiculing the movie, and at the same time advise to go and watch it. The joy you had in the review of the Book of Henry inspired me to go to the local theater and watch a film I knew nothing about, and where it was likely I would be the only one seeing it. There where 12 other people but I really liked the experience with a movie that I would not have seen under other circumstances. I would have done the same now, but unfortunately till September there are only blockbuster films playing. Thanks for the inspiration for the experience.

32:45 - some states have grant programs for Mandarin Chinese. Ours used to, which enabled even smaller schools to have a Chinese teacher. In the same vein, I attended a high school growing up that had Spanish, French, and German. A school a few towns over had a teacher dual certified in Spanish and Japanese, so I went there for Japanese classes. It just depends on your area and your state's budget and priorities.
@danielmiller78427 жыл бұрын
They're probably teaching Mandarin cause of China's status as the future dominant superpower, e.g., a lot of jobs are going to be dealing with or in China. I'm pretty sure that Japanese was widely taught in the 80's for the same reason.
@KarkatVantasBitches6 жыл бұрын
Born and raised in Ohio, here! Where I live, there's a ton of Chinese immigrants, so a few of the public schools teach Chinese. Even in schools where there aren't a lot of Chinese students, they offer it. I think it's the third most spoken language in Ohio.

For what it's worth, I went to a normal sized public school in the Midwest, and we had French, Spanish, German, Latin, and Japanese. So, still no Mandarin, but it seems not entirely unbelievable for that to be a thing, especially if they had a priority on business or something.

I gotta say, it sounds like you guys have been having a really good year so far. Outside of the predictable stinkers like Transformers 5 (which even then didn't elicit rage as much as "ehhhhhh"), so far most of the movies you've seen seem to be either amazing (War for the Planet of the Apes), "it's alright" (Boss Baby) or hilariously bad (this and Book of Henry). It seems like the worst movie you've seen all year is...I dunno, Rings maybe? In which case you must be having a stellar year.

I know this isn't really relevant to the plot of this film, but I remember seeing a movie where a woman lost her family and she had this box (or something) that turned back time. She tries to turn back time to before they died, but it keeps placing her in different times with even worse outcomes. Finally I think she destroys it, and she's teleported to before her family's death, and she's able to prevent it (I think?) anyone know what movie I'm talking about? I watched it when I was very young, and I don't know what it's called.
