Hi everyone! In today's video, I talk about how you can write your own light novel from start to finish. Light novels are a form of short novel which are very popular in Japan. Usually they include not only words, but anime pictures as well. Light novels are much shorter than regular novels. The average length of a light novel is about 50,000 words. They are usually published in bunkobon size which are about A6 size. 10.5cm x 14.8cm. Usually there will be multiple volumes in a light novel series. They usually start off in Japan by being serialized in anthology magazines, before being collected in book form, similar to how manga is. Some popular light novel magazines in Japan include Dragon Magazine and Dengeki Bunko.
Light novels follow usual book writing methods, with a few exceptions. Light novels are very character focused, meaning that the stories will normally be told through the focus of the main character. Not only that, but light novels are usually told in first person view, and follow the main character's journey. In this video, I talk about how you can develop an interesting light novel character, and how to write dialogue for you light novel that suits their personality. I also demonstrate the basic plot structure of exposition, a rising action, the climax, falling action, and resolution. You can follow this to help bring your light novels to life.
Thanks for watching! I hope this video helps you with your creations 💖

The main problem I am currently facing with my novels is creating the covers, especially in manga style. I can draw, but my skills are not there yet and lockdown run me a bit too dry to commission proper cover arts. Artbreeder is a life saver in many ways, but it's only good enough for creating young girl characters. I managed to create a half-good male lead face claim after a month of torture. And that's obviously not enough. And I have no less then five novels under production. Is there some advice for my situation?

I think light novels are good for people who want to write their own story/build a Wattpad portofolio but they don't have much time to craft a highly planned proses or long paragraphs This is what I'm doing now. Rather than wasting my time too much browsing for the correct phrases and description, I'll just write the simplest thing first, do the editing here and there on the evening, and continue with my other activities. A chapter update is still a chapter update nonetheless :D

This is a great introduction to light novel writing. I mean, the only things I ever wrote were some small Fallout fanfics and DnD campaigns and I don't have any formal training at all, but I want to take things up a notch and I didn't know where to start. im completely new to writing and ive been heavily inspired by series such as the emotional impact of Re:Zero and the careful and amazing worldbuilding of Moshoku tensei, i love how they introduce characters in a way that either makes you hate them, mistrust them, or like them right off the bat. And the amazing mysterious wonder of Made in Abyss and how it makes me feel so much for the characters. I know as a beginning writing i will never make a masterpiece from the start, but i hope with the help I've gotten from the writing community that i will eventually make something that is definitely not a masterpiece, but rather something that i am proud of.

I recently watched your video and noticed that light novels are typically around 50,000 words. This was eye-opening because we've been working on a harem isekai light novel similar to "Konosuba," and have reached 256,492 words. We originally structured it into three volumes of about 100,000 words each. However, after watching your video, we realized that a shorter, more concise novel might be more engaging for our readers. Your video really helped us out a lot by highlighting this important aspect. Our novel is still in its first draft and features extensive world-building. The story primarily focuses on a few key locations, with the only time montage occurring in the first volume, which covers about a month of the main character learning to survive in the new world. This approach allows readers to deeply connect with the protagonist and the new world he's navigating. We prefer a detailed, slow-burning writing style, emphasizing character interactions to drive the plot. Even though our series is long, the pace remains steady with bursts of fast-paced action scenes to keep readers engaged. We're trying to streamline our writing process because we have so many different stories we want to write, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Balancing multiple projects while maintaining high-quality writing is a constant challenge. We have some of our stories posted on Wattpad, Scribblehub, and Webnovel, but it often feels like there aren't enough hours in the day to keep up. New ideas keep popping up constantly, adding to the challenge. Typically, we write in arcs, and once we finish an arc, we move on to the next story to avoid burnout. Right now, we're revising all our postings on Wattpad, Scribblehub, and Webnovel to improve them, with most of our reads coming from Scribblehub. We believe that constant improvement is key to maintaining reader interest and satisfaction. We stick to this format-Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Denouement-when we write our arcs, applying it thoughtfully to each story we create. This structure not only keeps our narratives well-paced but also ensures they are engaging from start to finish. Your insights have been incredibly valuable in refining our approach and truly making our stories better. Your video gave us some great ideas on how to enhance our work, and we are genuinely grateful for that guidance. Thank you for sharing your expertise and helping us improve our storytelling. Sorry for the long rant.

It sounds like you have a lot of really good ideas! I think it would make sense to release your series in shorter light novel style books. Within the isekai genre, I think it would really help to focus on the action in each volume. If you don't mind me asking, what is your series called? I would love to check it out on Wattpad!

This is a wonderful video and it covers alot makes me wish i could make any kind of novel. I've written books and even fan fiction but I've never really posted anything or even tried to get out there and the 1 time I did find someone willing to edit things for me for cheap, they more or less told me I suxed and more or less. And they started rewriting my whole book and I didn't like that so ive kinda been trying to work up any courage to do anything since then... and about the only thing I have posted out there now is a fan fiction a short story of a show I like but I haven't checked in on it since I posted it to nervous to be talked down to again for my bad writing or ideas...

I've explained the plot and the storyline to a few friends of mine, some who are Japanese and read Light Novels, and they all have told me to write it down. They tell me I have a great idea and that it is a great story. I finally decided that this is the year that I'm gonna try and work on it! This was awesome. Really great info. I’ve been brainstorming with no intention of writing anything since 2016. Recently as a form of therapy for myself I started writing down all the ideas I had still with no real intentions. in the last month that has changed dramatically. At this point I’ve created several dozen characters and I’ve actually started writing what would be the first volume of this hypothetical series. I’m roughly 15k words in. I would love to have somewhat of a dialogue with you if you have the time and would be so kind. Maybe through email. Even reading a bit of my work so far to see if I’m on the right track if that’s something you’d be interested in after hearing the details. Thanks for uploading so much great content for me to check out and take care!

Last year I had the opportunity to finally self-publish my own light novel and fulfill my dream of becoming an author, a dream I had since I was roughly 5 years old. Truth be told, I wish I somehow watched this video before I published but it was impossible to predict the future haha. I recently finished writing the rough draft of the second volume for my light novel series, but I want to be sure it’s the best it can be and am so excited to see the illustrations I’ll be adding in it. Is there by any chance a way to contact you about questions or even for advice?

Thanks for this helpful video. I had story idea when I was in the bus and so I thought of writing a light novel. I don't have a title for it yet but it is a story about a family which is being attacked by an organisation. This organisation is after the female generation of the family for some secret reasons. The mother of 3 children (2 sons and one daughter) died because she was killed by the organisation. The father of them is the only family they have left. It is their task to protect the one girl and so that's the basic idea but it is much more than that. The past of the family, the founding of the organisation, their goals and why they need the female generation of this family will be revealed in the story step by step. It is a story about family, cohesion, love, secrets and inner darkness. Your video helped me so much, thanks to you. I hope I can publish this story in the future and also...sorry for my bad english haha. Greetings from germany Edit: I'm also sorry for the rough summary of my story idea but it is still in progress and I need more time to make a detailed plan of it

i am starting my own light novel series and so i want to know how many words should be in a single chapter and how many chapters are in a single volume... I will show you the description of the online light novel :in a world were demons run a mock there is said to be the demon king or devil who is the ruler of the now demon infested earth and the humans now live in air colonies (cities that float in the air) the boy named homa who has forgotten everything about his past for being given the power to be the host for many legendary souls of the past by God, he goes to travel this world in order to defeat the demon king and find the truth about his past. i want to get feedback on this description, the name of this web novel is THE HOST OF LEGENDS on wattpad (still writing the first chapter). the story would include academic life, fights, even some corruption in the government which i am thinking about.... please send feedback and if possible even visiting the novel when the first chapter comes out nice video btw it really helped me out :)

Hello! When it comes to light novels, the words in a Chapter can vary. Instead, focus more on the overall word count. The overall word count for a light novel is about 50,000 words. However, the length of the chapters are more up to you. I would personally recommend having about 1000-3000 words per chapter, and about 18-20 chapters per book. Also, I love the sound of your story. It is really unique, and I love the idea that the main character can be the host of the various legendary souls. I will definitely check it out on Wattpad! 😊 I am so happy my video helped you! Thank you so much for watching. 💖 By the way, I am hoping to create more videos on Light novel writing in the future. Out of curiousity, what kind of light novel tutorial videos do you think you'd be interested in?

Great video, I haven't seen anyone else going over the topic of English light novels. One think I would like to point out is that most novels (including light novels) are actually written in the third person. This is because is helps to clarify exactly what is happening and if feels smoother to the reader, and most people don't notice most books are written like this. As an example: "I've had enough, I can't take this anymore" Subaru gritted his teeth in frustration Reads better than "I've had enough, I can't take this anymore" I gritted my teeth in frustration Take a look at the last book you read (light novel or not) and you'll probably notice this. It's not universal but it is significantly more common to use third person
