Cannot say enough. Midori Ito was light years ahead of her time. If Midori skated today, I have no doubt that she would be the first woman to throw a quad in competition and triple axel + triple toe combination.

I think she is one of the most underrated skaters. She's known for her technical abilities but I think her artistic side is not recognized well enough. Her laidback spin at 3:46 is far better than most skaters they place ahead of her.

Agreed. I find it weird that some of her contemporaries like Jill Trenary were considered artistic and she wasn't. I think Midori was a much more artistic skater than Jill.
I love how Scott claimed "the artistic impression she's put into this program has watered down her awesome technical abilities" after she starts the program with a 3Lutz-33Toe combination and follows it up with a 3Axel-2Toe combo. I don't care how much of a legend he was, I do not miss his commentary!

Whenever I watch this program, I always wonder if she held back at the last second on the Triple Axel combination. She definitely had the height and speed off the first jump to go for the triple toe loop and she had hit that combination in the warm-up. It looks like she held back at the last second and doubled the toe loop.

had she come back not at worlds in 97 but on the grand prix circuit or even better during pre-season events, she could have been the 1998 Olympic champion. So according to Scott, Midori had planned 3L+3T / 3A + 2T / 3F + 3T and seven triples in total. With that kind of jumping repertoire, Midori would've placed very well in the men's competition at 91 trophee lalique as well lol.

Actually she was practicing the 3A + 3T in warm-ups so she actually would have had 3 triple combos, and 2 triple lutzes altogether.

Great quotes from Scott Hamilton describing the Midori effect on figure skating: 1989 worlds exhibition at end of her skate "witnessing the birth of a new age in figure skating", 1990 worlds LP towards end of her skate "it will be 50 years till we see anything like Midori Ito again", and now this tourney during the showing of her technical marks "She's revolutionized the sport of ladies figure skating". Her triple axel is still unsurpassed. If you watch the lalique warmup video (search midori 3a-3) she does an incredible triple axel triple toe that will leave you speechless. The greatest technical skater the sport has ever seen.

@kh320513 жыл бұрын
@caseyphx Hamilton omits too many words. Actually, the planned ending of the program was a step sequence directly into a double axel, which was already very difficult. Most skaters just did a step sequence then spins at the end. However, here Midori did a step sequence then into a triple loop without much of the set-up for the jump: Even now, most skaters choreograph their programs carefully to set up for triple jumps. That is why Midori's triple loop here shocked Hamilton very much.

Loved watching Midori skate! These are the performances she needed a few month later at the Olympics.
A program with that sort of technicality would still be a threat for today's skaters. 3L-3T, 3A and a planned 3F-3T. Not even Yuna could pull that off.

It's true that Yamaguchi was beaten by both Harding at Skate America, and Ito at Trophee Lalique before the Albertville '92 Olympics, and then Yamaguchi ended up beating them both and winning the Olympics. But this was only because of SP errors by Ito and Harding. It's a fact, going by results, that Ito and Harding were going to be marked and placed above Yamaguchi even if all of them had skated well. Ito and Harding had the great technical abilities, but they also had natural presentation and presence. To further prove this point, Yamaguchi won gold with two errors. That shows how underwhelming the "92 Olympics ladies skating event was.

regardless, i actually loooove the visual texture that her unorthodox position in the air creates. apparently the right form midair is to be as tight as possible but she crosses her legs almost up above her knee on some jumps , which actually would slow her down as it creates some drag. but all the more testament to the height of her jumps that she can still complete them under thsi harder position.

This was the last big Intl skating competition with U.S., Asian and Euro athletes participating before the 92 Olympics in Albertville. If Midori skated like this in Albertville, she would've beaten Kristi as witnessed here. @caseyphx I view jumping ability as separate from the ability to skate a clean program. They are related, but not exactly the same. To be able to do a triple axel late in a program when you're tired AND have already missed it (and thus presumably undermined your confidence) actually impresses me more than a skater who does a triple axel in the first minute and lands it. Doesn't mean the latter isn't preferable -- of course a clean skate is preferable.

Verne actually asked "Will it be enough?" As If...C'mon boy. There is still no female since her to have the same jumping ability other than maybe Harding. Some ladies do have huge 3lz/3t combos but this lack of a 3a is really annoying to me. I think there should be a bonus in the scoring if you land all 6 forms of jumps. 2 Judges put her 2nd. C'mon now. That program was ridiculously difficult.
@zigzaggyp74610 жыл бұрын
He had every right to ask! More than just jumps were being judged and Midori was never known as an artistic skater. So, he had every right to ask, seeing if the judges would give her the 2nd mark. And a 5.8/5.9 for this program is laughable. Midori is the best jumper, but this program artistically lacked very much. Also, you may be "annoyed" but not everyone can be Midori Ito or Tonya Harding. Kristi Yamaguchi was fine with her placement because she knew she could do nothing about what the others were doing. She couldn't do a triple axel, and just focused on what she could do. I'd prefer a clean skate over one trying and bombing on a triple axel because someone is "annoyed". And doing a 3/3 is far different from doing a triple axel. If you skated, you'd know that.
@chocolatesupport8 жыл бұрын
+Will R And Scott Hamilton became so biased in his comments around the time Yamaguchi (a fellow American) started to become a gold medal contender. Scott Hamilton is also supposed to be a champion and knowledgeable about figure skating, but he started to say silly things such as "I think the Italian judge thought Midori meant to do a single";. Please! Midori got 5.9s and a 6.0 because of all her content and QUALITY overall, especially that triple axel combo. In other words, she didn't really need a triple loop with what she already did. Hamilton started to be silly, biased and annoying as a commentator, after 1991.

@@hannibaljustincase9985 It's one of the reasons you have to admire Yamaguchi. She pushed herself to keep up and technically I still think she was second best in her day. The USA judge maybe bias here; however, they haven't been recently and definitely not in the 2002 Olympics for the ladies. If the US judge would have put Kwan in 2nd over Slutskaya, then Kwan would have won the 2002 Olympics. Check out the scoring as the old system would have given Kwan 2nd place with 6 2nd places and Slutskaya 5 2nd places. This would have given Kwan 2nd or 2 points and her total score would have been 2.5 overall and Sarah Hughes would have had 3.0 overall. Therefore, Kwan would have won gold. I don't think Kwan would have wanted to win this way with a fall, but she would have won. I asked an expert and the expert confirmed my understanding of the old rules. If you want to say someone is bias, then look at the Russians and when they are technical specialists and dictate the results. Kolyada is constantly overscored with only 2 completed quads in both programs and the final results he's acheived. The russians have cheated before at the 2002 olympics and they have cheated again with doping and will continue to cheat in the future too.
