A rather lifeless program from Midori. The coach and choreographer had it backwards on that one. Too much emphasis on the weakest part of her skating (the artistic expression) and not enough on the technical part. A double toe-triple toe was above almost everything that had been seen that night except for Yamaguchi.
You could really see where the judges were going on that one. They wanted a showdown between her and Trenary. Midori didn't deserve 1st place in my opinion but placing her first here would be the only way mathematically for the skater that would win the long program to become world champion.

Very nice. Playful, full of joy... It's so much fun to watch. Great speed, outstanding step sequence.

6.0s were a joke. This was a step backwards from her 1988 SP.

I agree. Perhaps the judges finally decided to give her credit for her strong spins and difficult entries into jumps. A lot of the judges had lowballed her one too many times in the past but as a frontrunner for the gold, the judges (some of them anyways) had no choice but to give her the marks she deserved. The 6.0s here were completely justified, especially in relation to what Trenary and Leistner received.

I actually did not like this program artistically, and I am someone who often defended Ito's artistry and spoke against her too low artistic scores (and sometimes even technical scores). The music was strange for her, she didn't seem to relate to it, was very slow in places, and the spiral sequence sucked. I actually agreed with some of Cranston's commentary on the skate (although not his viewpoint of Trenary winning the short). That said I agree she was so technically inferior she deserved to win the short. The 6.0s? Meh, I don't think it was a 6.0 performance, even techncially, but as you said given what Trenary and Leistner got I guess looking at it that way it makes sense. Yamaguchi btw had an excellent short program with a triple lutz combo, which was much harder than Trenary, Leistner, and the Russian and West German's triple toe-double toe, and even Ito's double toe-triple toe, had strong spins, and decently presented, and skated very well. Her artistry was far from her 91-92 level, and of course her jumps were never that high, but she still should have been 2nd in the short to Ito, but came 5th or 6th in the short which was stupid. But that was the same thing that happened with Ito in the past, you were scored based on how far down you were in figures, your pre event rank, all that other stuff, and if you werne't near the top in figures or atleast in the final flight (this is the first time Ito ever did well enough in figures to be in the final flight) it affected your marks every single time, as silly as that was.

The double lutz was kind of crooked and off, and the spiral sequence which is a technical move was pretty bad, which is why I would not have given 6.0 on the 1st mark as two judges did. That plus someone like Yamaguchi did a much harder triple lutz combo (don't get me wrong, would not have had baby Yamaguchi over her at all, but it would be a deterent to giving a 6.0 on the 1st mark too). 5.9 for sure, but not a 6.0. It would not have mattered to her winning the short anyway.

Music does not work for her at all. She's in the air though.

It looks like the choreographer tried to beef up Midori's SP with more artistic music...but the coach didn't actually improve Midori's artistry itself...so it made the artistry look even less polished.

May be this was the only time ever when Midori was overmarked

Midori was completely robbed of gold at Calgary by 3 vey average skaters who were polished to a gleaming shine of presentation to hide their weak technique. Witt, Manley, Thomas or Trenary should never have been seen as in the same league. There was deep bias here...

What you have to remember is for all the talk of her great jumping her spins were outstanding, miles better than the spins of either Trenary or Leistner. The footwork in this program is also outstanding, and much better than Trenary's especialy. The entry into her double axel is very hard and worth extra marks, and the jump is huge, Claudia's double axel this day was shaky. Her combo is harder. This isnt her best choreographed program but she was the clear short program winner still.

Her spins were rather sloppy in this SP.

Skating is more than triple jumps , 😩 That's because she can't do the difficult triple jumps . Only a weak skater would make a comment like she did

Commentators were spot on. Midori was the best here, but this short program was very blah compared to her SP at Olympics (more difficult with better music, step sequence and choreography) or even her SP in Cincinnati at 87 worlds. Im sorry, but 6.0s were misleading here. A 6.0 with a 3toe as the combo? Would she have gotten a 6.2 with a lutz?? Ive never seen this SP before. I just know the iconic long program here where she deserved all 6.0 for technical.

Not only was this the 6.0 system, but most of all, back then, the technical program was truly a technical program as in by-the-book required elements. It wasn't a technical program as in a "shorter free program". The figure skating committee would treat the singles technical program almost like how they did with the ice dancing compulsory. In this case, a required type of combination jump. This year 89, they required either of: a triple-double combination, or a double jump followed by a triple jump. This combination was done and looked at with value, because it's tricky for some skaters and they'd really go out of their way to avoid a double-triple.
