Fun fact: The words they were saying at the end weren’t words, it was just random gibberish, yet they both understood each other. Dani even says “We don’t need words to talk, it’s dancing!” meaning that they’re talking through dancing

Lmao it sucks to admit it but this cult would swipe me up so fast. As someone who's friendless, touch-starved, loves flowery aesthetics, and always wanted to be good at dancing, this scene right here makes me wish I were Dani. And that's a really, REALLY scary thing to realize. If I were given everything I ever wanted, would I actually be able to accept the brutal murders of others in exchange? Jeez Ari Aster you gotta cool it with the existential dread.

That’s my favorite part of the whole movie. I was high watching that scene, and it made me cry because I definitely felt what she was feeling. Very euphoric. Nobody ever talks about that specific part of the scene, and I’m just amazed as to why nobody gives the scene it’s 10s. The most beautiful scene that I’ve ever seen and it’s in a horror movie, it’s wild. I think about it often

That's the point, I think. Cults, successful ones like established religions, draw you in by being fun, friendly and loving but then they can be very abusive and deadly. I think this whole "dance" was supposed to be a "love bomb" -- she didn't know the rules and that put her at an advantage and more likely to win, the other girls knew if you bump into someone you have to fall down and you're out, she didn't know that and so she stayed in the longest.

please don't take the cult thingy literally in this film, it's a metaphor for family, a sense of belonging which are the thematic subtexts of the film (in addition to trauma and abusive relationship). you can see it the way she is finally being truly welcomed, held and loved by the cult members, also, Dani's dead parents are literally in the crowd, congratulating her once she becomes May queen, which is a further emphasis on said subtext.

Probably not. As manipulative as cults can be, they probably felt some kind of 'essence' within her. She was being manipulated by their friend from this coven the whole movie and I think this scene just encapsulates what she always had within her. The dance brought out her inner 'demon'. How else could she speak the language?

@@morbidlyobeserobocop3038 she wasnt actually speaking swedish (at least thats what most swedish speakers are saying), they were all tripping balls and ended up syncing or something so they could understand eachothers gibberish. this can happen during intense shared trips especially since she was being groomed into integrating with the cult which basically operates on a hive mind. so it WAS representing her being accepted into the cult but it was also just the drugs making them kooky

I don’t regard this movie as a masterpiece, there are a few flaws. Just a few minor flaws that detract from it. But the cinematography and editing is amazing. Aside from some of the shots of the tree lines, the spacing Aster uses, and the panning is incredible. The two best scenes, which are also the beginning and ends of the story, are the scene in the meadow, right before the shrooms trip. So much information is communicated right there, and it sets up the rest of the story. The maypole is really the end of the movie. Notice it’s the first time in the film Dani smiles. This is the moment Dani goes from the toxic outsiders cult, (Christian, mark, and josh) to being with the empathetic, (albeit murderous) Hagra cult. This moment is the climax of the film. You’ve gone from seeing Dani as this almost bullied outsider, and remember those 3 are treating somebody who just lost everything so horribly, to this accepted happy member of a family. You’ve now seen the real story. Everything before the meadows scene was foreplay. Everything after the dance scene is the after sex glow, and some post coital cuddling. I also love how Dani picks the yellow flowers for Christian. The colour yellow often foreshadowing who is going to die in this film.

4:38 oh yeah, they definitely intended for Danny to win. She didn't know the rules, didn't know you're supposed to "fall out" if you bump into someone (thus putting her at an advantage) plus at 4:38 it looks like the girl on the right was looking at the girl on the left right before they bumped into each other, it looked intentional. Like "alright, she's totally immersed now."

@thecolorfuleye5451 27 күн бұрын
Not to mention this 1:30, she bumped into someone and the other girl when out of the circle (I think) and no one stop the festival to say "you're out" to Dani, maybe it was all apart of their plan to make Dani the may queen, because Dani obviously didn't know what was going on or what to do, drugged or not.

@@zoe_ward Actually JC is right, but he's talking the "real world" thing. But both are right! This scene clearly feels like they embrace her like a family and I really felt happy for Danny that she finally smiled and enjoyed herself. At the same time, if we land to Earth, cults do that. It hurts, but even people who escaped cults can assure you that this is how it works. It's up to us if we take it literally or we take it as a metaphor, Both are alright :)
@imbroke1992
@imbroke1992 11 ай бұрын
@@zoe_wardit isn’t meant to be taken metaphorically, and even if it is, then it still doesn’t make sense. The cult kills people and tries to force Dani to do things she isn’t ready for (like drugging her, trying to forcefully feed her, making her watch people literally kill themselves after her family’s death). It’s no secret that the cult is evil in the film. But they are not supposed to be found family. It is just Dani trading one toxic relationship for something worse under the guise of care. If we were to take the cult metaphorically, it still represents an emotionally vulnerable person latching onto toxicity for comfort - almost like a drug. The cult turns Dani into something worse through its influence while giving her the impression of comfort. This is NOT an empowering movie.

@@zoe_wardDani's parents aren't smiling. The Harga are just as abusive as Christian was, but in a different way. She can't leave, has nobody remaining to tell her they aren't safe, and Pelle specifically brought her intending for Dani to be the only one to survive. It's not a fairytale. That's the point of the movie.

I think what people keep missing in this movie is the trauma and horror that Dani has already experienced up until the trip. Horror is inevitable no matter where you go and she’d rather have a family that loves her than experience further trauma of being with someone who does not love and see her. It was just gibberish, but the implication is that not only was Dani having fun and smiling for the first time in the movie, but they could communicate without proper language, via tone and body language. They were communicating joy. At the same time you have Christian, the only one left dressed differently, hunched over (whilst everyone has these beautiful lotus meditative poses) looking miserable. Of course, Christian can’t communicate. That’s christians fatal flaw. Mark is a loser poon hound. Josh is a pseudo intellectual looking for fame. Christian can’t communicate. You can! Midsummer festivals almost exactly like the movie (minus the drugs, rape and death) take place every year in rural areas of plenty of European countries like Sweden, maypole dance included.

What was the meaning behind this 4th Wall Break ?
@GreyJedi73
@GreyJedi73 Жыл бұрын
I saw a "meaning of" video that says they did that a few times during the ritual scenes throughout the movie to involve the audience to feel like participants, not just watching. Among other tricks. I'd say they they did a fine job.

I would guess that’s just a number that originated from Swedish Midsommar traditions? I’m unsure, but maybe something like that?
