Maybe you can do a video on why Soda companies are still allowed to have a monopoly at restaurants and them parks ? You can by Coke or Pepsi at any Grocery store or corner store but most chain restaurants and them parks you only have one choice and if it's not the choice you like, you're screwed. I am a Pepsi man, (in case you didn't read my other comment here) and hate that I can never enjoy a meal at McDonald's or in any Disney theme parks. I have to leave McDonald's and/or the theme parks in order to get the drink I want, yet, as I said, I can walk into any grocery store, big chain or mom and pop and get either. Why aren't they doing the same to grocery stores et all, I mean if they are allowed to sign deals with restaurants and theme parks, would stand to reason that they would want the same deal with Loblaws or any other big chain store. If the reason is because this would create a monopoly, why is it allowed in restaurants and them parks. I NEED TO KNOW @ Rob Plays ! WHY CAN'T I GET A PEPSI AT MCDONALD OR DISNEY WORLD ? (Edit) Which is why to me, and possibly other Pepsi drinkers ? DISNEY, is not the happiest place on earth, well I shouldn't say that. It's more apt to say that Disney is the happiest place on earth, until I sit and want to have a Pepsi with my meal, unless, I take it into the park with me. Is that allowed ? I know you can buy Pepsi on property outside the parks but I don't remember if one is allowed to bring it into the park ? Especially a bottle of Pepsi ?? Love your videos so far, Keep up the great work !

Dennis Robertson my information isn’t 100% correct but when I worked in food service at Disney we were told that Disney didn’t pay for the fountain drinks at all. Coca Cola provided the syrups for the soda for free in exchange for promotion on the cups that the soda comes in. Like I said this could just be some run of the mill gossip but Coca Cola and Disney are corporate partners so they have an alliance to the company.

@Logan Cascio It's even more interesting when you consider that one of the Disney films that was part of the 10-year McDonald's deal was Dinosaur, which was shamelessly and openly plagiarized from Land Before Time.

Dallin Burnett I was 14 when this came out. There was no connection. Even at Universal parks, when I was there, before and after, there were a few toys, rare, as the JP ride/land did not exist at Orlando, and they mostly just sold merch where there was an attraction involved. The LBT toys, which were also few, mostly existed in the little kiddie Feivel Goes West Land. JP merchandise was sold at the same retailers that stock the merchandise today. Despite being a scary PG13 film, toys were fairly common as they are now, with every film within the franchise. I bought a “Chomper” figurine at the park mostly because that was ONLY LBT merchandise I could find in the entire 90s decade. Felt kinda goofy owning it though, as he, and the million sequels that followed were kinda babyish, and I was a cool hip high schooler 😎

One thing interesting I realize in all of this is the role NICKELODEON had in this rivalry. It seemed that throughout this history whichever fast food chain Disney was partering with, Nickelodeon would heavily partner with its rival. Around 1990, when Disney was still partnering with McDonalds for its promotions, Nickelodeon partnered with Pizza Hut for promotions. This included the original incarnation of Nickelodeon magazine as well as toy tie-ins with Eureka's Castle. Once Disney began partnering with Burger King for promotions, Nickelodeon then begun parterning with McDonalds. This included the "McWorld" campaign with ads heavily shown on Nick as well as some sweepstakes. Once Disney went back to McDonalds later in the 90s, Nickelodeon then went to Burger King as its main fast food promotional partner. This included toys for various Nicktoons (especially Rugrats), the Kids' Choice Awards, and even a Nickelodeon green slime dipping sauce for the chicken tenders. Also don't forget that in 1999, after Disney had already defected to McDonalds was when Burger King had one of its biggest promotional partnerships yet with a kids' property, POKEMON. Along with that, Burger King was also frequently partnerning with Warner Brothers around the late 1990s, with toys for DC Superheroes (particularly Batman and Superman) along with various shows on Kids' WB. It was also around this time that McDonalds partnered with Marvel superheroes for Happy Meal promotions, although this was still over a decade before Disney had bought Marvel. It just goes to show that if a fast food restaurant parters with a property, the rival restaurant will then partner with the rival property.

My wife and I first visited WDW in 2005. We wouldn't go back until many years later, not because we didn't love it, we just didn't think about it. Fast forward to 2016 we finally went back for our 2 daughters first trip. I fell in love with it and we've been multiple times since. However, the last trip and our upcoming trip this summer just don't seem to be as special. So, I got to wondering why and it made me ask myself why I fell in love with it to begin with. The obvious answer of WDW being amazing wasn't enough, but then I remembered it was this channel. Back when you were still in NY and called it Rob Plays, I absolutely loved your Did you know Disney and historical videos. Your videos were a huge part of why I loved that magical place. When Disney+ relesed The Imagineering Story, I always thought in my mind that Rob had gotten hired by Disney and was behind the scenes of this awesome show. I wish you the best in wherever and whatever you've ended up doing. You certainly made me a huge Disney history fan.

In 1999, Burger King would strike gold with a Pokemon Movie toy tie-in, based on the Nintendo Game Boy Game/trading card game/movie. The Pokeball encapsulating the toys were recalled, as they were a suffocation hazard for very young children, since the ball came in two parts and could easily cover the nostrils and mouth...

You know, there's a third variable here--soft-drink sales. Disney, at least in the US, went to an exclusive parks deal with Coca-Cola in 1990. They probably wouldn't have found it as easy to flip between McDonald's and Burger King partnerships if Burger King hadn't also recently flipped from selling Pepsi to Coke. (Though I guess they did deal with Pizza Hut at some point, and Pizza Hut is on team Pepsi.)

M. Wayne agreed. I heard rumors that you could actually buy the entire set at McDonalds. We just collected them. I think we ended up with almost twenty. They were holiday themed, so we would sit them in the window during Xmas time and watch the white plastic turn beige. People complain about Disney remaking films into live action, they conveniently forget how long Disney has been doing it, and the amount of promoting that went on. Painting the earful tower, redoing a good chunk of the backlot tour... ...sooo much merchandise! The sequel, the sequel to the animated film, the animated series... 😩

Pokémon? The toy that had to be recalled because it was killing infants? The reason plastic Easter eggs now all have holes in them? I’m sure the lawsuit and recall hurt whatever success the “gotta catch em all” craze brought. McDonalds still had beanie babies, and that was a yearly event, and grown adults who didn’t even have children were buying them as “investments.” They were so popular that McDonalds had to require purchase of an actual Happy Meal. You couldn’t just buy the toy. So people were either trashing the meal, or giving them to homeless people outside... ...some of which also were seen throwing them away 😞

In the UK a lot of these movies (Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story and The Lion King for example) did receive McDonald's happy meal toys.

I just wanna see the Hercules commemorative plates I still eat off of today..😂😅 also, there was an ad for supposedly Jurassic Park Lost World, but the toys looked like they were Land Before Time characters. 😋

This switch from McDonald's to Burger King must have been exclusive to North America and maybe a few other countries because in 1995 the Toy Story kids meal toys in Europe were an exclusive to McDonald's NOT Burger King, same with Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre dame and other films cited.

Dang, 90s was great time to grow up in ,I remember going to Burger King down the street from my house to get the wild wild West sunglasses then the dragon Ball z statues came with a card , McDonald's with their put together inspector gadget action figure and the Pokemon toys getting a Pokemon with a golden card in it, hit clips, rugrat watches, even the backstreet boys we're selling their CDs at Burger King.

I remember BK more growing up for having cool toys.Alf puppets and paper records when I was a kid than Nightmare before Christmas, Anastasia and later Pokemon for my younger sibling

What’s depressing is taking my daughter now to BK. The toys are crap. They have like 4, and the promotion lasts 3 months. There’s also no children for her to play with, and that’s any location I bring her to.

I came to this video in hopes that I could find some imagery of that stupid Burger King kid with the goggles, because I was half-convinced that I was imagining that ridiculous era of crap in my mind. Thanks for making me feel sane again.

I remember the Inspector Gadget toys that McDonalds had. Things were crazy for a month while everyone tried to collect all the pieces. I was in Kindergarten, but I remember standing in McDonalds and seeing adults buy a dozen kids meals in order to just get the toy pieces that they needed to complete the full figure. It was a weird cultural phenomenon. Perhaps there might be enough content there for a future video.

I had fondly memories of going to Burger King to get the latest Disney promotion; Toy Story, Pocahontas, Timon and Pumba the series, Oliver and Company, and Hunchback.

The rerelease of Oliver!!!! Practically the only love that movie got. Sure, they had McDonalds toy when it first came out, but that was basically it. I didn’t even get to see the movie again until it was rereleased. Was it released to home video in 1988? Land Before Time was. Roger Rabbit was ...and 1989s Little Mermaid

Honestly, I love both Mcdonald's and BurgerKing and Disney so I never knew this. I mainly like classic movies but the remakes are okay. I someday wish to visit Disneyworld and Disneyland.

The Burger King toys were such better higher quality than the McDonald's ones. Although I did like the McDonald's little mermaid toys and rescuers down under movie cameras.
