That stranger danger McDonald's commercial was probably dangerous in and of itself, since it clearly attempts to demonstrate a hypothetical scenario in which it WOULD BE somehow okay for small child to accept food from a strange man who claims to be the real Ronald McDonald. And hey, even if it WAS the real Ronald McDonald, he can't take that kid to McDonald's. In fact, he EXTRA can't take that kid to McDonald's if he's the actual Ronald McDonald.

Funny now, but back then it was huge. Like Avatar, it wasn't about the recycled stolen story, it was about the graphics. Disney's first real attempt at a CGI film without the help of Pixar. And when Animal Kingdom opened in 1998, there really wasn't that many attractions. Kilimanjaro Safari, and Countdown to Extinction were the major E ticket rides. Of course, it was more extreme, and more of the ride worked, but it was still a major hit, even after the film flopped. Guests couldn't just KZfaq ride through of DL's Indiana Jones to compare which was better. This was Star Tours/Body Wars on crack! Now it's just a shakey journey through darkness. Then again, people are still big fans for Space Mountain. Perhaps this was why Disney did what they could with the rest of Dinoland USA. They needed something other than the boneyard. And what better way to make Dinosaur the ride appear great again, than to put it next to some mediocre carnival rides?

My dad worked at McDonalds in the late 90s and early 00s. We went to Disneyland in that same time range, and because he was a McDonalds employee we were able to enter a special room at the Countdown to Extinction area set aside for said employees. It was wonderfully air conditioned, they had soda machines you could drink from as much as you want, and when you were done relaxing you were taken directly to the front of the line for the ride itself. It was pretty nice, and basically the only thing I actually remember from that day at the park.

There's some debate on whether it's true that they met all those years ago. However it's one of those things where you can kind of get away with "printing the myth" because Disney/McDonald's connection gives you nice sort of poetic symmetry in having those two major architects of American capitalism in the 20th Century meet each other years before they would make their mark on the commerce of the country. It's insane if it is true thoufg.

A middle-age man was standing by a covered-wagon-shaped food cart with boards over its windows and the iconic golden arches emblazoned above the vacant counter. Nostalgia is such a strange thing, man. Watching this video made me sad for the days when happy meals and other competing brands offered COOL toys with their meals, instead of just like a sticker like they do now. Some of my favorite childhood toys came from McDonald’s or Burger King. But then I feel weird, because I’m feeling sad and nostalgic for a marketing ploy designed specifically to get screaming rowdy kids to demand their parents take them to McDonald’s and feed them garbage. I remember always asking my mom for McDonald’s whenever we drove anywhere! So I guess what I’m missing isn’t the era, because it sucked, or the marketing tactic, because it sucked. I’m really just missing being a kid and not KNOWING that I was being manipulated. So in a sense I’m realizing that most of my nostalgia was corporately manufactured, and all I’m really missing is the time when I couldn’t understand what that- HOLY SHIT 8:32 I HAD THAT BAMBI I STILL HAVE IT SOMEWHERE
@giselletorres4156
@giselletorres4156 8 ай бұрын
It's why so much of nostalgia nowadays like "omg the old school pizza hut/taco bell/ etc" or nostalgia for toys and products like Transformers and Power Rangers, it's all materialistic when you grow up and take a step back. You're all nostalgic for PRODUCTS and CORPORATIONS. Adults back then had so much disdain for 90s product placement as today's adults do with popular youtube and netflix figures like cocomelon and ryan's world garnering so much money with their merchandise. It's also why I feel fatigued with the oversaturation of collectible funko pops. Times weren't simple back then and it certainly isn't any better now.

This episode was interesting as always :) * Thank you for sharing that bit of trivia about these two giants crossing paths early. Life works in mysterious ways. * That musical segue into the McDonald's jingle was clever. Props for that :) * I never imagined Ronald McDonald could look even creepier than his regular iconic image... but him in that early commercial plying a child with burgers is amazing/awful. * I have strong memories of using that puppet from the movie Dinosaur to bite my brother. * Countdown to Extinction: Sponsored by McDonald's is unintentional surrealist alt-lit. * 14:09 all of these park attractions feel so much more organic (and appetizing) without the branding.

McDonald's definitely deserves the hate it gets, what with having little if any nutritional value & spreading the obesity crisis everywhere it goes, but... purposefully spreading lies and misinformation the way Morgan Spurlock did is unacceptable. I remember being so confused when I watched it as a kid as to why just eating a burger made him throw up. I thought he was just being dramatic and had forced himself to get sick. Now I can confirm that eating meat after being vegan/vegetarian for a long period of time can make you hella sick. 3 years into my vegetarian diet I decided to eat some grilled chicken to see if it tasted as good as I remembered since my taste buds had changed so much by that point (it didn’t) and I ended up getting really nauseous. Still annoyed that he didn’t disclose his veganism though.
