IOM resident here 👋🏼 Joey Dunlop (the greatest rider at the TT ever with 26 wins) is Michael Dunlops uncle, Michael won a race on monday on 1 of the lightweight bikes & would have won 1 today if he hadn't had engine problems. There is also a Robert & William Dunlop who have both sadly been killed along with Joey. The TT would be nowhere near as popular without the Dunlops. They really did make it a family thing over here on the isle of man.

I thought the documentary about the Dunlop family, Road, was pretty good, but nothing amazing, and then you get that final section about racing at the NW200. That story is frankly incredible

I saw something explaining that when you take costs - paddock, crew , three different bikes to maintain etc, it costs upwards of £50,000 to enter all the (single) races and to break even from prize money, you'd need to win nearly every race. So you are right on the money - they do it for the prestiage and because they can. Going myself for the first time this year 🙂

3 racers have so far been killed in the TT this year, Mark Purslow in qualifying last week, Davy Morgan on Monday and on Saturday the driver of a sidecar Cesar Chanal was killed and his passenger airlifted to hospital. The accident involving the sidecar has been very strange, it was initially announced that the passenger Olivier Lavorel died at the scene and the driver taken to hospital but has since been announced that this was mistaken identity. Edit: 5 in total died this year, the friday in sidecars father and son Roger and Bradley Stockton died in an accident. Still no news of Olivier Lavorel, and apparently there is another rider in a critical condition.

As of June 10th 2022 it’s incredibly sad to report that this year’s races at the Isle Of Mann has claimed another 5 lives of competitors, 2022’s fatalities second only to 1970 when 6 perished. Two of these fatalities were a father and son, the dad a veteran of the sport aged 56 and his son in his second season was just 21, they were competing in the sidecar competition 😢

Come over for a week and see all the other stuff the island has to offer. By the way far more people lose their lives each year hiking in the Scotist Highlands than the TT. It s just not a high profile death like the TT. Also look at the toll on Everest and K2 mountains in comparison.
@steve00alt70
@steve00alt70 2 жыл бұрын
yes but the families know when your loved one enters into the TT you have to plan their funeral in advanced because of how notorious it claims lives. You cant compare other dangerous sports to the TT because it is famous not for the speed but for the lives it claims.

5 dead so far in a competition that lasts *two weeks.* Comparisons with hiking over a period of a whole year that would involve a *huge* number of individuals are puerile. People wil die on mountains because you cannot prevent people from climbing if they want to, and that too, would involve huge numbers in a 12 month period. TT is an *organised* event that costs lives every time.

The Manx Government must have had a big sigh of relief this year to be able to hold its largest revenue earner again. It does gain a lot of money from being a Tax Haven with many companies having their registered business address on the island, tourism and the TT's bring in actual cash, GB Pounds. The Manx pound not being legal tender in the UK, It has the same value and no exchange fees at a bank if paid into a UK account. The same as Jersey and Guernsey pounds.

The first Isle of Man motorcycle race, and other races from the early 1900's were made to test the speed and durability of vehicles. Even events like the Indy 500 spawned from car testing. It is only really since the 1990's that things have enough tests and safety features that makes motorsport less of an equipment test and more about the sport itself. Even the most endurance of races expects everyone to finish these days.

This year there were 5 fatalities (won't give you the details). Senior ran a day late on Saturday, but there are still loads of bikes over from across Europe (it takes a few days to get thousands of bikes back to the UK and Europe - spoke to some guys who had a 36 hour ride back to Italy yesterday excluding ferries) TT is incredible to watch and it is made all the more by the thousands that come to watch. Steam Packet (the Ferry estimate 2500 bikes came to watch, but this does not include flights to the island Watching 200+ bikes get off the ferry on every sailing is eye opening). It has been mad busy and feels like a great year so probable 60K visitors, and considering the population, is at best, 95K is huge) The prize money of 18K does not even cover the cost of some parts of the bike that they race on. A simple small team bike would probably cost 150K+ then you have the expenses of 2 weeks in the IOM. love the LOM and the TT / Grand Prix. Our German club members from a small motorcycle club in Bavaria (I think) were back again this year - that is 40 years of camping on the same site with locals donating firewood, etc. No trouble, issues and as embarrassing as it is the only people caught speeding were local. I saw Motorcycle police from the UK but missed there German and French colleagues although they are normally here every year. The mistaken identity with the side car event was caused because the team swapped ID collars as a ritual before each race, and the circumstances meant that ID was difficult.

The Isle of Man is self governing, it is not part of the UK, but the UK Government takes care of it's defence etc. The revenue which comes into the island through the TT, with all the visitors etc is a very large part of its annual income, so it is unlikely that the island Government will shut it down any time soon. Yes, they do keep the road surface in good repair, but not to the same standard as a regular race circuit.
@qman2261

The course is frequently resurfaced and is always in good shape for the races. What may not be obvious is that a road with very gentle undulations at 50 mph changes character completely at 190 mph and riders regularly get airborne. Of course you can't turn corners when you're airborne so that has to be factored into the speed and lines riders take through the corners. Until you've seen it you might think what's the point of spectating when you only see the riders for a fraction of a second - I was shocked to discover that if you pick the right spot to watch, a 1 second view is better than an hour watching a Grand Prix race.

Pretty sure Joey Dunlop was Michael's uncle.... but I'm also pretty sure there are more deaths for the family in the past too. And the fastest average speed for a race I think is just over 131mph, the fastest lap is over 135mph....... fastest lap is always the last lap, simply for the fact the bike has a flying start and finish to it, lap 1 bike starts, lap 2 it stops for fuel, lap 3 it starts again, stops after 4, starts at 5 and by lap 6 it crosses start line at about 190mph and doesn't stop till crossing finish line, Peter Hickman holds the record 135.4mph

So, I believe that the Isle of Man is a self-adjudicating Crown Province of Great Britain and set their own laws and rules, so they don't have to worry about GB/EU traffic rules. If anyone from the area knows different, I will happily defer. I have also heard that their roads have no actual speed limits, regardless of TT week, and that their road are some of the best maintained in all of the world short of the autobahn in Germany.

Please note it's Snaefell pronounced snay fell not snaffle.😋 It's a Viking place-name. The daughter of the King of Man, her name was Afrecca, married John de Courcy, the Norman knight who invaded and captured part of Ulster, an Irish province. His castle at Carrickfergus still stands today in excellent condition.

@@smythharris2635 Oh yes, obviously it could be the norwegians too. More likely it was them too. The danes used to travel to England and Normandie, while the norwegians travelled to Scotland and Ireland. It’s most certain they paid Man a visit too.

If your loved one decides to enter into the TT then you might aswell plan their funeral in advanced. There would be alot of heartache and crying when your husband or wife enters.

When you talk about why it hasn't been shut down or changed due to safety, remember, the only people who have the authority to do that are the Manx government and they are the ones making money off it - the Isle of Man isn't part of the UK and, strictly, the British government has no power over it (though in practice they do have influence and handle Man's defence).

And long should it remain so. As a British citizen, the IoM should have the authority to make the rules they want, but we will defend them to the hilt.
