This video is fantastic. I don't think there's another U1 teardown/repair video on KZfaq that really goes into this kind of detail, especially the more convoluted parts of disassembling one of these machines such as the wheel timing, belt drive assembly/tension, location of fragile clips, order of assembly etc. Great job, I'll be referencing this video in the future for sure.

Thank you so much for this detailed disassembly and repair guide! I used this, as well as your motor disassembly video to overhaul an S7260 Cat and Dog that was almost ruined because the were running it with the bag holder missing. The inside was a mess, the motor was all filled up with pet hair and dust. Its all spotless now and running great.

I have an issue only with the lower unit. Lower unit has no vacuum. Hose has full vacuum and no ports are clogged anywhere. I wonder if the hose position you showed somehow in the lower unit is not in the correct seal position. I have not taken the lower unit apart yet so can't imagine how that would happen without it being opened up.

Your fantastically useful video production is a gift that keeps on giving. I suspect there will be more folks discovering this now that the U1 S7 vacuums are out of production. I just fixed my 2010 vintage S7210 with a few new parts and hope it lasts another 10 years. ;-)

37:40 THANK YOU SO MUCH. You just saved me a trip to the repair shop. I just finished cleaning the beater bar assembly (two long-haired adults and a couple of long-haired cats make for a very sad beater bar) and went to put the unit upright again, but it jammed and wouldn't lock upright. A web search indicated that this ribbed shield was likely the problem, and I discovered that it was quite loose inside the housing. I managed to pull it out and verified that the vacuum could now lock upright, but I couldn't for the life of me see how it was supposed to be secured inside the swivel head; I was pretty sure I'd have to take it in for repair. Your video solved the mystery; I was able to get that shield back where it belonged and working properly again without binding up the works. Thank you!!

Thanks for posting the video! Its great to be able to watch someone take apart the machine. Had a hard time getting the handle to tilt, and it turned out my wheel timing was messed up. Found a broken off tab on the bottom motor cover and I think the sliding dust cover must have jammed causing one side of the wheels to go out of sync. The part showing the timing marks was a little blurry, but once I got it apart and it made sense. Had to reposition one of the gears but once it was adjusted the handle tilted smooth as butter! Removed the sliding cover since it doesn't prevent the vac from working. Definitely German engineering at its best and kind of complex. Very solid, though, compared to the throwaway vacs they sell in chain stores. Have had it about 7 years and filtration/suction are awesome. Had a Panasonic before that fell apart within 5 years.

Learned a lesson the hard way. Reassembled after cleaning and didn't push down hard enough on the motor retention wedge or whatever it's actually called. Within a year the belt had worn out from being too loose and slipping on the drive sprocket, essentially stripping all the belt teeth off of the belt. New belt with the motor retention wedge pushed firmly downs far as it would go and it's running like new again. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Thanks for the video! I just removed a bunch of caked up dust from below the chrome plate on the bottom of my S7 Tango and a bunch more from the intake tube. There were two metal "clips" inside the tube that seemed to catch most of the dust and that was the source of the blockage. Do those clips belong in there are did I vacuum them up at some point and they got stuck?

I have this vacuum and got one open box on eBay in 2018, but since cleaning my car a few months back, it’s developed a higher pitch sound as if something is blocking airflow. I’ve taken a broomstick and cleared the extension hose, but the sound is still there making me wonder if there is a blockage in the head unit? I’ve checked the brush rollers and the suction hose inside and it seems clear.

@@PerformanceReviews cumbersome, unreliable and unimpressive is some what I've read though there was not much elaboration. Regardless, I took it all with a grain of salt and purchased a new dead stock S7580 yesterday and I'm in love with it lol. My first impression while looking over basics of the design was the bag chamber seal is very substantial and impressive compared to (I hate to say it) my X7 or X4. The vacuum glides and steers effortlessly too, even being as heavy as it is, I'd assume due the casters up front. Sealed suction seems close to or right on par with most high end canisters which in my limited experience is not usually the case with uprights. Super super happy with my first Miele and it's a really cool looking design too which is honestly what first caught my attention.

A mostly excellent video but a few vital points, especially the re-installation of the wheels, are not in the field of view of the camera. Also around 40:40, music starts which replaces what appears to be vital dialogue about wheel re-installation and timing which lasts until 42:40. What in the world is that about?

Great video. Love that it's literally looking over the shoulder of a trained professional as you explain what you're doing. I have two questions: 1) Removing the electrical handle: you mentioned a T20 into the hole. Is it a push latch or a screw? 2) You mentioned he hose tab breaking and being under warranty. This is the first I've heard about it being under warranty. Mine is held on with tape after breaking within the first year. Are you saying that I should be able to take the vacuum to a Miele repair shop and have that part of the housing replaced under warranty?
@tonyschaefer3196
@tonyschaefer3196 2 жыл бұрын
About 1) I answered my own question. It's a push latch. But the handle was rather difficult to remove. For others trying to remove the handle: because it's a silver piece, there was nothing to indicate it was moving so I put a piece of tape where it meets the base and then I could see that it was, indeed, pulling out.

The market is shifted away from uprights and into stick vacuums. Upright users now buy stick vacuums instead due to some successful marketing campaigns and misconceptions. They still make their canister line up which is the more sensible thing to buy.

Hi, I bought this brand new 7 years old and it just started having problems staying up. The lock height foot mechanism won’t stay. I brought it to my local shop that I bought it from and they basically said it’s time to buy a new one. They attempted to repair and said it would cost $250 but would still lean and could potentially have problems in a few months. They didn’t feel comfortable charging me that and doing the repair since it wouldn’t be 100% fixed. My question is can it be 100% fixed? Do I need to take it someone else or try myself? Or is it truly time to trade up. Was thinking sebo this time after watching your reviews

Hello Mr. Performance Review! I bought a Miele Cat & Dog vacuum second hand. It’s upright swivel type. It Looks to be in overall perfect condition but the bottom isn’t suctioning- in fact it seems to be pushing air out instead. The hose is suctioning Very Well (like wow it’s so powerful!!). It has an empty bag, nothing appears stuck around the roller, filters look good, behind filters looks very clean, i can’t find any blockages based on other KZfaq’s, but I don’t know what else to do now. Today is my last day to return it for store credit.. any tips you could share? Or someone you recommend in Phoenix AZ? From your experience is this fixable/worth trying? I have a Miele S7510 and I'm based in the UK. The cleaner is generally working fine but has recently developed a niggling problem. It locks upright OK but still swivels freely from side to side in the upright position, making it difficult to use the hose with various tools. I dismantled it based on your excellent video but couldn't see what would stop it from swivelling apart from a round very slight protuberance on the base and a corresponding hole in the upper part. Does this wear after 6+ years of regular use and, if so, can you suggest any way to raise the profile of the protuberance or the hole?

It’s such a shame these got discontinued. I just picked up a used one from my local dealer for a great price and it performs well, but there’s a nasty smell coming from it when I vacuum. It almost smells yeast-y? It’s not coming from the bag or filters. Are there any measures I can take without tearing it down to this extent and risk messing something up?
@PerformanceReviews
@PerformanceReviews Жыл бұрын
If you got it from a dealer there shouldn't be any smell in it. You should make it a good point to make it their problem. In this video you'll see that there's a green piece of sound insulation that is quite porous and often can attract odors when the machine's been abused. The machine probably needs to be broken down and thoroughly washed. Again your dealer should have done this before selling it.

I’m curious what the air path is like on this machine. Does all dust and debris go through the hose or are there two separate air paths; one for the hose and one for the Brushroll? If everything goes through the hose, then the air path is about as long for this machine as it would be on a canister, correct? I always thought one of the benefits of an upright is the more direct air path. Am I wrong?
@PerformanceReviews
@PerformanceReviews 3 жыл бұрын
No the benefit of an upright is saving money. There are less parts to manufacture than a canister. That's really the only purpose and upright has. Most canisters have more power than uprights.

Is $200 too much for a new motor? A vacuum repair shop has my U1 and that’s the price they quoted me bc the motor was “shot”. It’s my fault though. I bought it used on eBay and only turned it on to make sure it worked before putting away in the garage bc I still had bags left for my Hoover vac. Once I decide to start using it, I notice that it is not picking anything up. I take it in to get a free estimate. Unfortunately, I’m way past my eBay protection time frame. Would it be best to let the repair shop handle it? I feel confident in being able to replace the motor if it’ll save me more than $80.

That's insanely too cheap to replace a motor in one of those the cost of the motor should be higher. If we're talking about the section motor and not brush roller motor. If I were you I would not attempt to turn any screws on that machine. You'll end up having to pay more in labor to have it put back together

@@PerformanceReviews I am not sure what motor it was. The lady who repairs the vacuums said that when she did the diagnosis/tune-up, she found a screw inside and a lot of the carpet powder. It was really loud too. She said it would be an additional $79.99 to open the motor and clean everything out, but then the vacuum stopped working. They could not fix the motor, so a replacement was the next step to get it running.

Yes if it's a manufacturer defect. Bring it to your local authorized dealer and have them take care of it for you

Tremendous amount of good info. Too bad you didn't make sure many crucial steps were not in the frame as you completed the task! You know how to do it, but we don't and that's too bad for us I guess. Thanks anyway.

People use youtube to learn how to to repair cars, renovate homes, write software, design and solder circuit boards, and a lot of other things more complicated than fixing a vacuum. Your channel is a great resource for learning how to repair a vacuum, does Miele require you to discourage people from using the information you share? I really hate companies that are hostile to users repairing their products. Makes me regret having bought a Miele years ago.

@@PerformanceReviews It ended up being simple, once you get the machine side to the index you then just match up a lump in the wheel side to the carve out in the machine side that will be visible at index point.

So disappointed in ours. It’s constantly clogging and we’ve had to take it in for repairs twice.
@PerformanceReviews
@PerformanceReviews 2 жыл бұрын
If it's clogging then has to do with sucking up something too big. If you block this vacuum you'd block any vacuum. Are you pulling the blockage out yourself or have you had the shop pull it out?

@@PerformanceReviews wow I can’t believe you replied! Yes they are blockages I find on my own (after watching tutorials on how to do that). I found a blockage today in the black curved hose that goes into telescopic wand. Also annoying that the telescopic wand has been replaced twice. The plastic coupling is so cheap for an expensive machine. Idk maybe it’s because we have 2 furry cocker spaniels. When the vacuum works it’s amazing. It’s just always getting clogged. Great tutorial.

Really really poor camera work. Especially during the re-insertion of the wheels. 10 seconds of decent video and explanation on how the gearing positions actually work in stead of countless comments about "if you don't understand how this works".... well, you NEVER explained it. So how the h-ll are we sup[posed to know?
