Daily Mig-21 operations catched on video at Campia Turzii Air Base in Romania where the last Mig's within NATO are operating together with AFRC F-16's from Texas USA.

Pretty much. Romanian pilots call it "teava", which sort of translates to "the pipeline". For the exact reasons you`ve mentioned above :)

Reminds me a bit of the Dutch nickname for the Lockheed Starfighter that the Dutch Airforce flew in the 70's. -> Vliegende kachelpijp (flying stovepipe). Well at least it sounded better compared to the German nickname for it.. The Widowmaker. Many Starfighters crashed in German service.

This plane is the highly produced supersonic get this is great at that time it's manufacturing stoped so now it's spare parts not available so that's why these many crashes and fault happening

yes, but the pension is very close because Romania bought 17 jet fighters of F-16 ,and still more to add ,so ,MiG 21 will be pensioned soon

Comandantul unitatii ar trebui sa observe problemele de safety, echipament de protectie personal pe care subordonatii le incalca flagrant, lipsa de profesionalism prezentata media nu face cinste nimanui..

Metehne vechi. Pe de o parte "miserupismul" tipic pentru maiștrii de aviație, pe de altă parte, nimeni nu le spune că urmează să vină cineva să filmeze sau să facă poze și oamenii sunt prinși nepregătiți.

they are the real romanian hero :) with a plain who have maybe more then theyr age (first MIG 21 was made in 1956) those guys still fly, with passion and love for theyr country!! and as a lot of ppls say romanian pilots are one of the best pilots in the world ( i hope those guys who said that are not with two face )

Это не лючок. Это отверстие для дополнительного забора (или выброса) воздуха перед компрессором двигателя. Регулирует оптимальное давление воздуха перед компрессором в зависимости от режима работы двигателя. В частности, на форсажном режиме происходит всасывание дополнительного воздуха. Такое же отверстие, симметрично, расположено и на правом борту. В целом, это одна из мер борьбы с помпажем двигателя.

the only main reason that Romania still keep them on fly is the heavy maintenance and heavy update with the engine and avionics which can be maintained in the country, which is not easy, considering the age of the plane( as I know in the mid '70 was adopted in the Romanian Air Force ~ 400 pcs.), to fulfill the NATO requirments for fighter planes, we get almost a entire squadron of MLU F-16 (12+5) 53-th sq. Warhawks, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbxlnryimdDcpnU.html but still not can maintained like the Lancer, modernized MIG-21's. Next step in this decade 2020-2030 we have to get the brand new F-35, is mandatory, we're very behind with all military technique, small arms rifle programme, IFV's and APC personnell tender, corvettes tender, army truck tender and so on, the Army must to be upgraded and that's must happen very soon because near us is Crimeea ( 400 Km from the Romanian shore ) where Russia placed "tons" of weaponry, heavy ones, a big thorn of our interest and NATO's, so, Russia can be move fast and invade any country around them, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey are in their sight, not only Ucraine nor Georgia, so to speak the Black Sea become a Russian lake.....but without swans ))

To consider that the Mig 21 first flew in 1955 and entered service in 1959. That versions of it are still on active duty 61 years later, is telling how great the aircraft is.

@@SandsOfArrakis well as I said, to us only reason of flight was that we have the industrial capacity to overruned the problems appeared with maintenance without Russian help, but the plane is quite weak constructed, any part can ceded rapidly. More flight hours more maintenance hours, not great percent of usability on time of peace, if was a somewhere a small war I don't know how can manage with so obsolete fleet. When the Lancer programme starts, we had heavily modified over 100 planes, that'a lots, but many crashed, a quite huge percent, now we have some 20's pieces or less in service. So, my thoughts... Russia have weak capability to make long runner fighter airplane, same thoughts about the jet engine where is even worse than their western counterparts. They are worse at manufacture planes, that's why you did not find so much MiG's except India and some particular Russian "friend" state like Algeria or Venezuela, honestly the worst ever planes, westerns ones are way muuuch better.

So, my thoughts..., gândurile tale nu fac 2 bani, în realitate motoarele rusești-sovietice au ciclu mai scurt de viață (ăsta a și fost unul din motivele pentru că s-a ales Mig 21 și nu Mig 29 cu motoare mai complexe, dar și mai greu de reparat fără piese rusești, pentru că motoarele de Mig 21 se mai pot repara parțial la AEROSTAR Bacau), s-au folosit, ”canibalizat” părți din vechea flotă de Mig 21 din care aveam destule pentru reparații. Se știa de la început că va fi folosit doar pentru trecerea la noile avioane, niciodată nu s-a pus problema să se modernizeze ca o mare investiție. Sunt MiG-uri peste tot în lume numai unul ca tine nu poate să le vadă! dacă mai pui și alea făcute de chinezi ...

Exact !Pt cei săraci că noi ,care nu și au permis platforme mult mai performante.Mig 21 nu a fost un succes!Au fost multe țări sărace care nu și au permis o platformă mai nouă care venea la pachet cu multe costuri de exploatare.Dacă mig 21 era așa "bun" producția lui continua după anii 90 sau chiar îl modernizau
