Charles Dowding always recommends multi-sowing beets, radishes, herbs, peas, onions, and all sorts. As he says, "it's like they want to be with their friends". And in my own experience now, just about every brassica will benefit from multi-sowing! It's like a gardening cheat code XD

Charles Dowding does this. 3 to 5 beet seeds together; he pulls the biggest off the beets in succession, and lets the smaller ones keep growing.

I just saw a blog post of Charles on multi sow. The leeks look really nice because they grow up out of the dirt. So you don’t have that much sand in them to contend with. Also I see that you direct sow yours. What I think I’m going to do is use the soil blocker. I’m going to start my seeds in them. Then transplant the block directly.

Cherna Gast Yes, this is where I learned thus technique as well. I don’t know why Luke didn’t mention him in this video. I’m pretty sure he also learned this from Mr. Dowding, and should have at least given him a shout out, instead of going on and on about people who thought he was crazy for trying this technique, and how it’s “new” information. Certainly new for many gardeners, but not a newly discovered approach to gardening. I love learning new things from more experienced gardeners and I watch tons of gardening videos on KZfaq. If I ever decided to do gardening videos myself, I’d like to think that I would give credit where credit is due, for great tips I learn along the journey that is becoming a great gardener. I know I’m forgetful though, so if I couldn’t remember where I heard/learned it from, I’d at least give a disclaimer that I saw it on a KZfaq video, or learned it from someone else, instead of presenting the topic like I had pioneered the technique myself......

I found this out by accident. I was growing some microgreens indoors and I accidently dropped some turnip seeds in a different tray. They started growing and I did not know what they were as they grew big before I saw them and did not recognize them. I decided to let them grow to see what they were. They grew into 3 nice size turnips, now I am planting them on purpose : ) It is fun to grow turnips indoors when there is 10 inches of snow on the ground.

As my multi-sown (directly into the garden soil) beets are expanding to gigantic size, I've been "stealing" greens to use in salads. BUT - I tried chopping up some of the greens and put about a cup of them into my morning protein shake. I know - sounds weird! IT WAS AWESOME! They added a bit of that earthy flavor - but I didn't notice what I would call leafy material. It made for a SUPER HEALTHY, TASTY SHAKE! :) Thanks for all your advice, Luke!!!! A little less than 20 large beets in that bunch you showed, guess it depends on how many you have left in the ground. So I'm not seeing a huge benefit but you are probably getting more beet numbers overall plus the density reduces weeds. I direct sowed beets this year and transplanted some. The transplanted ones did much better but they were better spaced.

@skittles9970
@skittles9970 3 жыл бұрын
The way I spaced mine is, first I started them in soil blocks. (You can also use starter cells or small cups if you don't have a soil blocker). Then I thinned to three plants per block. Then, using the square foot method, I planted each square with four blocks per square foot, which results in 12 beets per square foot. When you use this method, you don't have to put rows in between if you are growing in raised beds. If growing in-ground, you would only need a row about every three to four feet so that you can walk in your row, yet still reach your beets for harvest. This works well with turnips and onions, too! When harvesting, gently twist and pull your largest first, and then any remaining small ones can continue to grow on till they are the desired size. Check out Charles Dowding on KZfaq!

Omg! I never thought of that. Great idea! I have some potted fruit trees. If I did that do u think theyd grow well mid july in kansas? Its pretty hot but they would be shaded. Hmm... I feel an experiment coming on...

@@amandaadams4103 Oh indeed! It was easier than I thought. I was experimenting too. I planted one fava in each plant. Cut it when it got about 5". Added leaves to pot. I have one pot for growing more fava seeds. I have a garlic and onion in other trees. They get too dry. Won't do it again. Happy Gardening Sis💚🌱

It’s rather ironic, but I always avoided the larger beets at the market for the same reason....until I was forced to buy them because that’s all I could get....and to my complete shock found them to be sweeter, tastier, and more tender! Now I go for the big ‘uns!!

I had beets just as big as these this year growing them more traditionally. I tilled compost into my soil and made sure it was loose. I planted them in full sun and let grass grow with them so the leaves didn't get muddy. They turned out great and I was able to get another batch in the soil for fall.
