I'm 47 and I've suffered from migraines all my life. Until 2 years ago I didn' realize they were migraines because of the nausea , I thought it was food poisoning. Docs need to let patients know that nausea is a major symptom of a migraine. Mine last 3 days w\o medication and it takes 3-5 to recove afterwards. But I only get them every 3-4 months. It's pure agony without medication.

Hi Teddy, we completely agree with you. Nausea is one of the significant symptoms that differentiates a migraine from a headache. Nausea can become so bad that vomiting can often occur as well. Do you also vomit during a severe migraine attack?

I found your explanation the closest to what I've experienced whenever I have migraine. I never thought my symptoms were migraines. I do have a question though, is it normal to have migraines everyday? I mean, I am constantly experiencing all those 4 phases you explained everyday throughout the day. The yawning part is what threw me off into believing that my condition were not migraine, I thought I was just never sleep well. But even on the days that I slept for 12 hours, I still yawns like crazy, and felt like a zombie after a couple of hours. Do you have any advice on how to prevent migraine from occurring as often? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as these symptom are interfering with my everyday activities. Thank you sir!

Bertrand Doeuk Thank you for you thorough reply! I did had my neck checked out several times since I constantly have stiff necks as well. However, through the MRI my doctor told me there wasn't any major condition, and advised me to go for physical therapy if I'm really concern with the problem. I did went for quite a period of time for the PT until I realized it was not helping much. Until now I would still wake up with stiff necks. Not to mention that it gets worse whenever the migraine starts hitting. I always thought there is a correlation, yet my doctor told me there is not. One thing I noticed that is really weird is that when I stretch my head all the way to the right , inside my head on the temple area there seem to be a pulling sensation, and after a minute or so of just maintaining my head to the right and finally position back, I felt it alleviates both the stiff neck and the migraine symptom, although the effect does not last very long. I seem to be experiencing various migraine symptoms everyday, my forehead would always be dull and numb along with the nose-bridge. My eyes would have some kind of burning sensation whenever the symptoms gets worse.

Hi Coley, yes we completely agree at how it can be so frightening when an attack commences. For some people, auras can become so bad that they temporarily lose their vision completely. In addition, others can have severe hemiplegic migraines whereby half of their body becomes tingly, numb and may temporarily suffer from paralysis. We understand your fears and concerns.

I haven’t had issues for a couple years and two days ago my migraines hit me outta nowhere with a new trait. My lower legs lose sensation while the most intense pain occurs. I get the rainbow squiggly lines just before and the more lines that occur mean I gotta leave to take my injection. The injection of imitrex knocks me out cold and it’s very gradual as the pain takes some doing before it lessens enough to lose conciousness. I have a couple days of being lethargic and dizzy afterwards. My neck has been so sore these last two days. This sucks! The nausea is intense. I have had my normal stress levels without anything added and it will not go away. I start to feel better and WA-BAM! Sudden intense pain and it started again tonight. I better get off this as the light isn’t helping matters. Nice video though. Thanks. 🥺

No, cutting off red meat didn’t do anything at all for me. What I cut off as far as diet which triggered the severity of migraines for me was banana. I noticed my migraines intensifying whenever I ate bananas. However, nothing brings the migraine to a zero. At most the intensity reduces. A new specialist I started seeing prescribed a combination of sumitriptan, naproxen and Nortriptyline which has been helping reduce the migraine. I had also tried emgality but it didn’t help. The sumitriptan spiked my blood pressure so I have stopped taking it. I’m back to not really having anything that helps unfortunately.

Hi Dazzled2Spirit, that is unfortunate. It seems you have tried to reduce certain foods, and trialled a number of different medications with no significant changes to your migraines. If you have trialled all these avenues I would recommend in getting your neck and brainstem assessed to see whether or not that is contributing to your migraines, and potentially a source of the problem.

Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic Yes I requested that from the current specialist but he said they couldn’t do that. Not sure if it’s commonly done over here. He did a neck MRI and there wasn’t anything he found. So far, three specialists I’ve consulted can’t find anything causing the migraines yet I’m in debilitating pain daily.

Thank you for your reply . - I had none to mild nausea, but on some occasion i vomited for hours due to very strong vertigo - I had vision problems on every migraines, glittering forms, dark-spots to total blindness, but i don't remember having tunnel vision . One time, people's face were just a little bit distorded and an other time i couldn't see people's face in my peripheral vision, their facial features were replaced with just plain skin tone (both were quite scary) . - The pain was always on both sides with an equal amount of pain

Thank you. Your video is very informative. I do hope I get a response, I know this video was done a while back. My journey began with sinus infections that went away with one antibiotic regimen. A time came when it wouldn’t go away with several doses and so resulted in 3 sinus surgeries. It too another year after the last surgery of excruciating untreated pain before I was diagnosed with migraines. Then I remembered I would get migraines once or twice a year and end up at the ER but it went away with just naproxen sodium. Now, medications may have reduced my pain at most 40%. So I’m never pain free. I have daily miserable very painful migraines. I had 70% of the symptoms before, but with the current attack I have, I literally have 98% of the symptoms and have the stages you described. I have pain around my neck and try to find the best pillows to reduce neck pain as I think there’s a correlation to the migraine(my period as well) Please what do you think could help me given my explanation? Is there a possibility that nerve endings in my sinuses may have been affected through surgery and causing migraines? The ENT maintains my sinuses look clear. I feel so so uneasy within my sinuses especially after the surgery. I have tried Topamax, gabapentin and amitryptyline and none managed the migraines well. The Triptans do little or nothing for me.

Thank you so much for your response and providing me such meaningful and helpful information. Sorry my response is rather late as I ended up at the Emergency Room Hospital due to intolerable migraine pain. I have been seen for two years at a University Teaching Hospital Neurological Unit. I decided instead to go to a Headaches Center as my reasoning is that they may know more about various types of migraines and hopefully be able to determine what’s causing mine so I can receive the proper treatment. So the Neurologist I saw today is going to run an ultrasound of the neck to evaluate the brainstem you mentioned and other bloodwork. Thank you for explaining more about the link of sinus to migraines because I know the discomfort within my sinuses definitely plays a role in the migraine headaches I experience. So, I have a lot of inflammation and rhinitis in my sinuses and not really sure why this builds up a lot.....probably from seasonal allergies which I suffer from. Can inflammation contribute mildly or greatly to migraines? And if so, what are the types of care that seem to help to decrease the inflammation besides steroids?

Hi Bertrand. Please could you tell me if you think I get migraines. It usually starts with blurry vision. Maybe only for a couple of seconds but focussing on objects is more difficult. I also feel a little dizzy or light headed. I just don't feel right. The last time I did get a stiff neck and started yawning which I know is part of the prodrome. The stiff neck was the first time I experienced this. It's usually yawning, dizziness and focussing that's a bit off. When I get the headache it's not one sided. Usually both sides of the head but towards the end it's more localized like a small part of the head. I've had it at the top and even on the crown. I also feel nervous and have had panic episodes at this time. I think it's migraine but my doctor thinks it's tension headache and it's the anxiety that makes me light headed. Because I don't get aura (zig zag lines, stars etc) and my headaches are not one sided I don't know if their migraines but I don't feel quite right whereas a headache is quite simply head pain. It usually lasts about 3 days. I have had nausea before but my last one didn't. Please could you let me know what you think?

Bertrand Doeuk I've had the localized pain on the top of my head and also had it on my crown. Just a small 5 cm x 5 cm part. It can start with what I would say is a tension headache where I feel pain on both sides of the head then a day later it becomes localized. Its at this time that I feel a bit light headed and dizzy. It lasts about 3 days then I'm fine again.

Hello there, I've been having Migraines for 5 years now. Before my migraines start I feel increasing pain in the left groin area, as the migraine intensifies so does the pain in the left groin. Three days ago the migraine and left groin pain got so bad that I vomited twice and went to the ER, I told the doctor about my symptoms, he checked the groin area, sent me to a CT scan, did blood tests. urine test and there's no sign of what causing this pain that co-exists with my migraines. A day after I saw that my penis got swollen, almost like excess liquids under the skin, I also feel a tightness in my testicle area with some hard lumps and some discharge from them. It's been three days and I still have some swelling and still have some discharge, still feeling fatigued from the Migraine. I really don't know what I have and hope that you could explain to me what possibly going on with my migraines and overall health.

I’m just wondering after a migraine is it possible for extreme exhaustion? I had a migraine starting Monday , then by Tuesday afternoon it was bad , Wednesday I was weak and tired, it’s now Friday and I’m still exhausted 😢 could this be because of the migraine. I’m new to getting these I’ve been getting them for a few months now . Thanks

Hi Natalie. The short answer to your question is yes, that can absolutely be due to the migraines. Migraines can result in all kinds of symptoms, and fatigue is a common one. What you're describing is something that we typically refer to as a "migraine hangover". With that said, when you have new or progressing symptoms, it is always a good idea to discuss this with your local doctor, as they may wish to check that there isn't anything more serious going on. While migraines themselves are horrible, they typically are not life threatening, but it can still be worth checking out. Once that has been cleared, I would recommend having your cervical spine assessed to determine whether you have a sensitised brainstem, as this is something that can be treated!

Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic thanks for the reply. I do have kyphosis so I’m wondering if that could also be a cause of the migraines along with them being hormonal. My doctor has now given me the sumatriptan but in nasal form but I’m scared of using it . It’s the sickness that worry’s me as it’s constant along with the pain .
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain3863

@@N19824 There are many other medications that you can take, so if the nasal spray is scary, it may be worth trying a wafer option, or something else. Kyphosis of the thoracic spine is normal, but if you have increased kyphosis it can affect the neck, and indeed if the kyphosis is of the cervical spine (the neck), that could contribute.

Hi, I’ve been dealing with migraines for about 1-2 years now , I’m only a teen. Usually after the pain stops I’m fine but I think this is the first time I’m having an actual post drone episode. The day before yesterday was when I got the migraine(it was painful and I experienced dizziness )and it lasted from when I woke up to when I went to sleep. Yesterday I was crazy nauseous, and lightly dizzy. But today I’m very dizzy and I feel very lethargic, sad, and my body feels weird . Feeling like this is so new to me, I’m a little scared, any tips on how I can handle this?

Unfortunately it isn't unusual for migraine symptoms to change over your lifetime. They may become more or less intense, and the duration may increase or decrease. There are all sorts of potential associated symptoms that can come with them as well. That's not to say you're doomed to a life of migraines. If you haven't already, it's important that you speak to your GP and let them know that your symptoms have changed. That way you can be referred to get any scans that they believe are necessary. From there, I recommend having your cervical spine assessed to determine whether your brainstem has become sensitised. A sensitised brainstem is something that can be treated, and can be very successful in treating migraines.
