Will the string or straight edge do the laser alignment tool's job?

Yes a string works just as well if all 8 points touch or a straight edge with four points touch or a laser if you have the laser recently calibrated. My strin and straight edge never need recalibrating.

Does it affect bearing wear in the motor, driven part or pulley bearings? Oh, he's a belt guy - so he's only thinking about the belt.
