No DRS, no stupid batteries, no overweight cars, no buttons to get extra power, just pure power from petrol and small screaming cars running around - that's how it should be and it once was, but not today

As much as the DRS makes overtakes way too easy and takes away that little bit of unpredictability that could be left in a race today (e.g. a dominant car stuck, somehow, at the back of the field will have absolutely ZERO issues blasting past everyone), it also has to be said that races of that era were almost NEVER like this one. Most of the times, races would be processional without any overtakes attempted and just "waiting for the pitstops"; a slow car with a low enough wing and a powerful engine was able to keep a train of faster cars behind it until the pitstops just by virtue of being faster on the straights (see the "Force India train" meme that emerged about a decade later). In this case, we had a combination of a mixed up grid due to rain in qualifying and Ferrari having a spectacular strategic vision (yes, they were good back then, I know, sounds kinda unbeliveable looking at what they do nowadays...) , setting their car up with lower downforce and a lighter fuel load to be able to overtake and build a lead in the race.

Back in the 90's and 2000's overtaking was rarely possible unless there was a massive performance difference. And that was actually the reason for the most entertaining and exciting races I've ever seen. Schumacher, who won at least one race every year from 1992 until 2006, often prioritized race pace rather than qualifying pace and therefore often ended up having to gain positions during the races. Since this was not possible to do on track, it had to be done through clever strategies. Some times it didn't work out and he had to try to overtake, which some times resulted in spectacular racing and some times resulted in a boring race. But many times it did work out one way or another, like the 4 stop strategy in France 2004, and the 2 stop strategy on Silverstone in the next race. As Schumacher, Ferrari and Bridgestone focused on race pace, he had to deal with specialist qualifiers like Trulli (among others) and Michelin tires that generally had better one lap performance. Combined with the difficulty of overtaking, this actually produced many interesting races. If overtaking had been easy back then, qualifying wouldn't have mattered and Schumacher would have taken the lead and built a gap before the first round of pitstops, killing all excitement. By the way, after 2002, when Ferrari dominated and Schumacher finished all races on the podium, the rules were changed every year trying to mix things up. The championship leader was given a disadvantage during qualifying in 2003, having to run first. In 2004 the previous race winner was given the same disadvantage. In 2005 tire changes were banned, and finally the shuffle was successful, as Bridgestone failed to provide competitive tires, while the majority of teams were running Michelin, who then got to twice as much testing done compared to Bridgestone. This is in great contrast with the later years. When Hamilton and Mercedes were dominating, the rules were frozen and testing was banned, making it impossible for anyone else to catch up. If a faster car is behind a slower car, the driver just pushes a button and passes. Todays F1 is less about racing and more about saving cost, saving fuel, saving tires, saving fun.

@@erpaderpa4469 There is some truth in what is said. However, still remember that the overtaking " problems" in f1 started as early as early 90s. If one would review the races , one will surely observe that most overtaking took place only if the car ahead had a sensible tyre wear problem or the car behind had a less downforce setup or had a better top speed. Even by 1998 , overtaking a car with same rubber on, pretty much same top speed or same setup was next to mission impossible.
