Ferrari 640 F1 (F1-89) ex-Berger: Warm Up, Fly Bys & V12 Sound at Red Bull Ring!

This video is about an ex-Gerhard Berger Ferrari 640 F1 (also called F1-89) my friend ‪@Italiansupercarvideo‬ and I recorded during the 2020 edition of Challenge & GT Days event at the Red Bull Ring. The F1-89 was the very first car to adopt a semi-automatic gearbox in Formula One history and it was powered by a 3.5 litre V12 engine that was able to produce 660hp by the end of the season. It was driven by Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger.
The driver of this car, Holger Lange, was kind enough to provide us a couple of on-board laps around the Austrian race track. Hope you like it!

Jorge 235 the biggest thing for me is the lack of “cracking through the air” engine noise. Was lucky enough to attend many Grand Prix in Canada from Mosport as a teenager up until the 1990’s in Montreal. The sound was a symphony of its own with the unique sounds of V8s, V10s and V12s all playing their parts. Nothing about it seemed forced or meant to fit an overarching narrative- it was just racing in its purest, most raw form. Just an opinion from an old timer. 👍🏻

@@J_3564 The difference is the current cars are just a tool. A sport as wasteful and unnecessary as F1 has one job - to entertain us. As it is F1 is basically a subsidised hobby for a few thousand wealthy people. The ultimate racing machine should not be 1m longer & 200kg heavier than it was 40 years ago. It shouldn't pretend to be enviro-friendly while running eight wind tunnels year-round and flying a city across the globe every few weeks.

I'd prefer Mclaren mp 4/6. Also a V12, BUT with manual gearbox! Maybe just have the sounds of the Ferrari V12 :D

The 640 and 641 were the most beautiful of all F1 cars of any era in my opinion and the V12 just made it. Not the best car but the one you'll always remember.

I always liked the Benetton B192, but this one is a close second. I like all of the cars from 1985-1994. The current ones are just flat out ugly, IMHO.

Agreed! My vote goes to the 640 early version with no top air inlet, but those beautiful shark inlets on the sides behind the driver.

Yilmaz Ayten that’s a good question. I’ve always thought that Ferrari provides support at the track but as far as ownership, maybe the cars are made available to people who have a proven history with Ferrari? Someone had to give the approval of the camera being mounted.

When I started watching F1 at the age of 4 I remember the red car and the red and white car. These of course were McLaren and Ferrari and they will always hold a special place for me as 31 years later I'm still that die hard fan

Kickers and Stickers do you understand the difference between setting a faster time and being 4 times faster? There’s levels in between. And just so you know, it took F1s almost 15 years to improve the 2004 season’s lap times. Let that sink in.

@@randomdude239 Yep, 4x Faster performance, lap times, cornering speed, straight way speeds, accelerations and braking etc etc. 1989: Monaco Alain Prost McLaren Honda 1:25.501 2019: Monaco Pierre Gasly Red Bull Racing Honda 1:14.279 idk about you but 11 seconds faster on a track like Monoco is like a top fuel dragster vs a 64' Volkswagen beattle.

Davillenueve . Yes it certainly was , the designer John barnard had his office in Guildford UK and the drawings were sent electronically to Maranello ... unheard of at the time.

Lovely sounds. Saw Berger and Nigel Mansell race these cars at Montreal in 1989. Sat in the grandstands at the hairpin and the sounds of the Ferraris struggling for traction- and they definitely struggled- was an experience. Thanks for the upload.

What a great sounding car. I remember reading how Mansell, having found himself in the lead of the first race was absolutely furious as the car had never managed to last more than a few laps without a breakdown during testing. Amazingly it held together and he won lol

F1 at its best! Great sounds and roar power, shame the drivers didnt give it Max, sounds like they changing gear just before power band. Doesnt it look odd now with being able to see so much of the driver! Great vid, thanks for this.

This car was campaigned the year I was born. My earliest F1 memory is my father watching a race on TV early one morning, and I remember some guy with a funny name (Gerhard Berger) driving a red car (so, this was sometime from '93 - '95). I can appreciate every period, but '88-'97 is still my favorite era of F1. PS 19Bozzy92, as always, doing the lord's work.

The most beautiful Ferrari ever ... ? I still remember this season and the smorgasbord of melodius mechanical symphonies it introduced - FORZA ! The Renault V10 was a revolucion' - I will never forget it's warm up lap for the opening race of the season :) And this Ferrari - WOW ! Gorgeous sound from the high revving sonorous V12 and it's revolutionary and trailblazing semi-auto gearbox - VIVA FERRARI !

I'm currently watching the season reviews from 1979 to 1999. I'm right now at the start of the 1989 season and this thing sounds amazing watching the replays of Brazil 1989. The mclaren V10 is also pretty good tho
