Watch ‪@MikeBattagliaMusic‬'s mind-blowing performance of "Wordless Prayer," a blues-inspired original composition, using a brilliant approach to variable microtonality on Lumatone. Starting with a 24-EDO mapping, Mike programmed his Lumatone's mod wheel to allow him to adjust the quarter-tone intervals in real time. With the mod wheel at the top, it's 24-edo. As the mod wheel is lowered, all of the half-sharp/half-flat notes move together in unison lower. The result is an instrument that gives Mike the ultimate flexibility to subtly play just like a guitarist would, completely from his gut, without the often artificial sound and hand-distracting need for a pitch wheel.
Filmed live at South Street Sounds in Philadelphia, PA. Stay tuned for more full performances and interviews with inspiring artists as part of the new Lumatone Artist Series!

Thank you everyone! This is a tune I wrote called "Wordless Prayer"; it's kind of a gospel/blues-inspired thing. One of the things I thought was most interesting when I first got this keyboard is that it basically has a "physical blue note" key on it. You can get all of these sounds that normally you can't get on a keyboard - unless it's like an old barrel house piano. It's kind of a trip! So I spent some time trying to make use of all that in a way I thought sounded natural and fit the music, taking inspiration from barrel house players, harmonica players, etc. Whether you want to call the result a traditional blues or not is up to you, but whatever you call it, hope you enjoy! I would love to see what some other blues musicians would do with one of these.

Mikes playing is everything I like about non-tempered traditional music and everything I like about more academic xenharmonic music mashed together. It’s like folk music from the future and I love it.

I don’t work for Lumatone, but I strongly recommend getting one! I’ve been wanting such a thing since 1977, and I’ve been enjoying the heck out of mine!

I think for your next performance series you all should try to get in a band to play a microtonal performance. I think like the lumatone, drums, and maybe fretless bass/upright bass. I think a video like that would really help people visualize how it could be used with a band as an alternative to the piano paradigm and that the lumatone could be paired with other instruments easily, even if your band does play 12tet music. Love these videos by the way. Really considering at this point selling all my other gear and getting the lumatone.

This is just magnificent! I assume it’s easier to play in this layout than the actual 24-EDO layout?

Nice, if diatonic blues - I wasn't hearing any microtonality, Was that his intention? Or I may not be able to really distinguish it yet. I'm not sure I get what the wheel was supposed to do, so I'll dig a bit deeper.

Well, blue notes and bent notes are pretty common in blues, where that sound came from approximation of non western tonality, with a instrument like this, you have to approximate less. You probably didn't catch it because you expected more out stuff in comparison. I will say, the "base" of the tune was pretty in line with equal temperament

There's plenty of microtonality in there, he's just not laying on it and it doesn't sound like the ethereal/cosmic microtonal music that most people play.

How similar is it to a traditional keyboard?
@Foxxey
@Foxxey Жыл бұрын
This is a quarter-tone layout so every second note matches one note on the traditional keyboard. Also you can go up instead of just playing horizontally which gives you more "space" for exploring higher temperaments instead of squeezing the notes into one big line.. You can setup other preset temperaments and layouts ranging to up to 53 notes per octave. Also this works just like any other midi controller so you can setup your own notes. They also have options to change the key colors.
