Coach Leach held a press conference on Monday, but nearly half of it was an impassioned rant about student loans and his own experience with them.

I guess some knows I though I payed one school off, 75% of another school. Only to find out I was young and dumb paying a scammer. I’ve been trying for a long time to get ahold of the proper people. It should be that hard in America. I could have done the world allot of good by now, but it looks like it’s going to be a normal job for a while. I’ve gotta get back to researching. Unless someone sees this and can kindly explain.

Mike is a truly down to earth guy. I was walking downtown one night after a Texas Tech game at Oklahoma and happened to see Mike on the streets. He was heading to a bar just as I was, so he invited me to come have a drink with him. We ended up talking for over an hour. I’ll never forget that day. Super funny and very personal. Awesome coach and looking forward to him being at Miss St

I met Mike when he was coaching at Oklahoma and just wanted to shake his hand (I was on Campus with my son the Thursday prior to a home game and just happened to catch him walking outside the old Switzer center). He ended up talking to me for a solid half hour and would have talked longer except I felt bad because the longer we stood there talking, the more people were gathering. He is truly a genuine guy.

My favorite teacher, Al Simpson, was a geology teacher at Cypress College. One day in class, he told all the students, OK guys, you can turn your little testes in now. At the time, he was in his early 60s, and was very innocent and what he said, and as soon as he thought it over, he turned as red as Santa Claus’s outfit. Mr. Simpson used to work for Shell oil and then he became a teacher in the early to mid 70s when he was already in his 60s.

My son's is $2,000 a semester/$4,000 school year, and he hates the food and rarely eats with the plan...the meal plan that's required for freshman no matter what. It's extremely frustrating and discouraging!

J Cameron usually meal plans are required freshman/ sometimes sophomore year. good chance his meal plan is included in his room and board, so about $5k-$10k

Mike Leach has always been a straight shooter. He's slow, deliberate and it takes some time to get to the point, but he's a great soundbite. Listening to this entirely, I take away that he struggled for years with his student loan debt, but he hung in there, paid it back and now he's a multi-millionaire!

I have friends who hated school, are in loads of debt, hate their job that has no use to their degree and tell me they wish they didn’t go to college like I did..then they flex what school they went to at little hangouts and parties. That’s the problem it’s a social expectation more than a personal decision.

1984: The Bankruptcy Amendments and Federal Judgeship Act of 1984 (P.L. 98-353, 7/10/1984) changed the language excepting loans from a "nonprofit institution of higher education" by striking the words "of higher education". This opened the door for private student loans to be excepted from discharge. 1979: An amendment (P.L. 96-56, 8/14/1979) excluded periods during which the repayment obligation was suspended, such as deferments and forbearances, from the 5 year period before an education loan could be discharged. The amendment also clarified the "to a governmental unit, or a nonprofit institution of higher education" language to indicate that government loans included those insured or guaranteed by a governmental unit and not just those made by a governmental unit, and that loans to a nonprofit institution of higher education were loans "made under any program funded in whole or in part by a governmental unit or a nonprofit institution of higher education". 1978: Initial enactment of the exception to discharge for education loans made by the government or colleges and universities. Loans were dischargeable if they had been in repayment for 5 years or represented undue hardship. 1976: A regulation precluded the discharge of education loans made by the government or a non-profit college or university during the first 5 years of repayment. Previously education loans were dischargeable in bankruptcy without any exception

I had no idea Leach and I had so much in common. I couldn't afford grad school in the US so took out federal loans to fund part of my living expenses abroad, where there is no tuition. As a foreign student I couldn't work more than 20-something hours per week because that required a different visa. My loans got deferred during my master's since the uni was recognized by the US government (probably because it is more white and Christian). However, I moved to another country for a well-funded PhD project, also where there is no tuition. Country 2's university didn't make their deferment list, despite being hundreds of years older than the United States and being a regional leader in research (poorer country with less Christians). Therefore, I took the once in a lifetime scholarship and told them I will never pay a penny of the interest you charge during my PhD. Within the first year or so my loans went to a private collection company that can't even tell me how much I owe or change my password for their website. I am still off the grid, which is why I wrote vaguely. If loans are not forgiven to some degree and Medicare for All doesn't happen, I will probably stay abroad. The hospitals are fine, and I never leave with a bill. If I have children, they won't have to ruin their lives for higher education.

My daughter asked me When she turned 18 “Are u gonna help me with college ?” I said on one condition, no student loans. She said deal. Now she has a masters degree and no Student loans

I have 2 little boys under the age of 5. I started college funds for them (529) immediately. When they turn 18, they will have more than 130k for college. If that's not enough, they are on their own!

My daughter just graduated from High School last year. When she was a little girl, I never dreamed that I would be recommending she 'not' go to college when she got out of High School, but that is exactly what I have done. There are a lot better options than college these days. Unless you plan on going to college for a long time and getting a doctorate in something, I don't think it's worth the debt or the education you 'don't get. Hell, there are Walmart and Mcdonald's managers that make more than a lot of college graduates with Master Degrees. College is one big scam.

If you want your daughter to work at Walmart or Mcdonald's just because the pay *seems* comparable to some rare cases of college graduates who struggle finding jobs, then that's your choice. Education is more important than just salary. The cost is certainly a scam, but it has many benefits. Instead of working to combat the costs, we hold the younger generations back. It's not good long-term.

@@Nick-yv1wy Many people are now stating to get trades. But if everyone is in a trade, does that not devalue the trade? I do not understand people sometimes. Most public universities are run as a business and usually, when something is run as a business, it is for profit gain. Sallie Mae (once government, run as a business), Public universities (government funded, but run as a business). They need to do yearly investigations to keep any type of business minded person OUT OF anything for the benefit of the people. That is what private unis are for.

That's why many construction companies want that. The thing with college is you're learning to do things outside of your specific major as well and a network of well educated folks can actually see the writing on the walls and begin to bargain collectively to meet their needs. Public universities should certainly be kept in check to provide a good education as cheaply as possible. Regulations on cost should be made.

He was wrong to blame Carter. It was Paul Volcker at the FED that set the rates. Carter was only to blame insofar as he didn't think to propose changes to how student loan interest was calculated.

I too would happily go to jail for a week, or 3 months to rid myself of my loans. $198,000. Now, a bunch of that is the ex-wife's loans. We consolidated our loans back when we were married. UGH! Then divorced. I'm stupid.
