A professional and an amateur all make mistakes. The amateur would sweat and panic, the professional goes along and keeps on playing. Professionals also make mistakes professionally i.e correct the mistake, improvise seamlessly, reaching a point in which they say to the audience "sorry for the mistake" and the audience is like "what mistake". That's a mark of a true professional right there

I’m ,laughing my ass off at so many of these comments. Yes, Mangini screwed up. But then some say, “but it was on the pulse” or “okay, he played the wrong part, but it wasn’t a screw up” or “it was JLB’s fault because he had to look to see Jordan showing him the beat”. I’m so glad none of you kids are in my band. 😂 You won’t find a bigger defender of Mangini in the face of Portnoy fanboys than me. But the bottom line is Mangini played the part totally wrong. You can clearly hear him hitting the cymbals trying to find the count and he found it rather quickly. And it threw James off, of which with help from Jordan, got back on it. That’s what bandmates do. Have each other’s back. It was a fuck up. Big deal.

@@carlmanu changing vocalist would be like changing guitarist, James Labrie will probably never be replaced if he doesn't get any injuries that prohibit him from performing. Dream theater is a family, they have all known each other for almost 30 years now, they are definitely not gonna kick him. I don't personally have a problem with it, I can look past it, knowing that he delivers in studio and did deliver on every single album, I don't wanna listen to a DT album without Labrie on vocals. I was at this show (Red Bank NJ) and it was Mangini’s fault, if you listen to the verse before it goes into the “This world is spinning around me” part, he adds in an extra eighth note, I have the entire song recorded from all the way up at the top of the theater and it’s plain to hear. Jordan is the conductor of DT in relation to movements and entry failures to correct them. Several times, on different tours we see him helping Petrucci and Mangini with the progress of the songs. On KZfaq we find videos of Jordan helping Petrucci during Mike's drum solos in Finnaly Free for example, and when Mike leaves the tempo slightly Jordan is there on the side pointing the correct rhythm. @@seanhartel5362 Even without Portnoy, I find it difficult to deny the synergy the band still has, even if they are rustier than they used to be. And it's not like this is the first time this sort of thing has happened anyway. The following clip has Portnoy on drums: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsVyl9xk26_Vhn0.html Also, it is worth mentioning that it was James who came in early in this clip with Mangini. The only reason it sounds like Mangini was getting "off beat" is because he was trying to gradually slow down to compensate for the fact that James came in late. Essentially, he was pausing at the end of each measure slightly until he was in time with Labrie's vocal parts.

@@KevinGsWK oh really? Factor in his age, how much he's had to strain his vocals throughout his whole career hitting high notes, playing through whole sets on tour while having two bad vocal cord injuries during his career with DT. They (Petrucci and Rudess, writers of most of their music now,) also continue to push the envelope on newer records, not adapting to his changing vocal capabilities, instead expecting him to sing like he did almost 40 years ago. He's putting in effort still, and I can't imagine HOW DIFFICULT it must be with all he's got going on, including "fans" like you who just shit on his singing all the time. If you don't like how he sings live, don't see them live, just listen to their albums... They played here in Atlanta and I was fortunate enough to see them. He sounded very good in person. Just adding to the general knowledge here, the recording goes into double time and Mangini didn't do that, which probably threw LaBrie off -- Mangini kept tempo, though, so it shouldn't necessarily cause any issues. It is, on the other hand, ironic that in the auditions the band threw all kinds of weird tempos at Mangini and expected him to react instantly while their singer apparently can't do that. Now, in LaBrie's defense, I don't think he sounds as awful as everyone is saying, I think he sounds ok. Could benefit from singing a semitone or two lower though, transposing songs is no sin.

the funny part starts at 0:08. MM should play snare on downbeat, and there JL should start singing "this world is spinning around me". MM was playing right on tempo but different from original, and JL went off cause he was not counting and waiting for the snare on downbeat to start. JP remains always on time with the guitar. Amazing how JR goes director mode and saves JL. James man you should count by yourself when singing with DT ....
