@@billduffe4472 20 pounds my ass. The weight cutting stories are just more myths that add to his mystique. Why did he never weigh more than 170 for any non title bout in his entire career? Why would he drain himself for fights he didn’t need to make weight for? Here’s the answer: he didn’t. He probably never weighed much more than that 170 in the ring.

@@billduffe4472 Yes, this is what I have always thought. I bet Gerald was a light heavyweight in those fights, definitely the second one. On the other hand, I've heard Jackson say he had to keep eating just to stay at middleweight and towards the end of his career actually went back down in weight. Never understood how fighters could make the weight, then add 10 or 20 pounds overnight. I mean they are already supposed to be in shape to begin with and train daily, so I never understood it.

Those body punches by McCallum in the 1st round didn't appear to be doing any damage - BUT they were sapping Jackson's strength (and probably breaking his ribs). By the 2nd, Jackson was so much weaker and slower. THIS is textbook bodypunching 101 by a Master.

It's only seen as an early stoppage because Jackson wasn't totally out on his feet yet, but he was taking massive unanswered damage and had no way back into the fight. I would have thrown in the towel if I was in his corner and the referee didn't wave it off. No sense leaving it all out there for a fight you're not going to win - the technical edge was just a level above. Better to train hard and come back then to lose brain cells that you're never gonna get back.

This fight always had a Hagler vs Hearns feel to me. Both featured all time heavy handed punchers engaging in a brawl & landing bombs that didn't matter because their opponent was utterly invincible, then succumbing under relentless pressure in the early rounds. Neither Hagler or McCallum were ever stopped in 111 combined fights. 2 top 5 all time chins holding up vs 2 all time top 5 middleweight punchers.

Having been there myself, you can appear lucid and have your wits about you immediately after a stoppage, but that is only because the intense pressure of having someone beating down on you has been halted. After taking a good shot or shots your reaction time is not the same and you can't see the punches coming and you know you are in trouble when don't feel them. Look at Jackson he was all of the above. Big respect to both fighters but that stoppage had to happen when it did.

@@garrizelpinnock2692 I agree with iceface original comment but to say they were scared of him is shite. He was just not a big enough name at the time. Brilliant fighter though and he could have been competitive and might have beaten Hearns and Duran. Not so sure about Hagler. He would have had a chance against the older slower Hagler that Leonard fought.

On paper McCallum was vulnerable to a guy like Jackson. He was not the type of fighter who can just stay away and box he liked to stay inside and mix it up so he was going to get hit especially with right hands. Also a guy who throws a lot to the body is opening up his head to get hit. McCallum just had the better chin. He got stunned a couple of times but took those punches and then when he had Jackson hurt he poured it on and got him out of there.

If you watch McCallum vs James Toney and McCallum vs Jackson back to back, you really get a good idea of the monster chin that McCallum had. Ate some vicious shots from both guys who were destructive punchers. Plus the overall skills and body punching was top notch. Complete fighter.

I think the referee could've given Jackson another opportunity, but McCallum had a granite chin, an almost unrivaled skillset and punched deceptively hard. I rate him alongside the Fabulous Four.

George benton es uno de los grandes maestros en la historia del boxeo pero creo que Mike aprendió quizás un poco más con Eddie futch ya que era más viejo y Eddie supo como alargar su carrera boxística mediante movimientos defensivos.

Such an underrated fighter. If he was from the US he would have gotten far more recognition and glory. I would have loved to seen him step up and fight a prime Marvin Hagler. Hagler would have probably beaten him (similar to Mugabi) but Mike would have given him a hell of a fight. Thanks so much for posting! "The winner and new middleweight Champion of the world, Julian Jackson, Jackson!" Damn, was that a sound bit from another fight? McCallum won and he was defending the WBA super-welterweight title. Weird.

McCallum will always be kept in the shadow of the Fab4 because they all ducked him. He would beat up Duran, KO Hearns and probably outpoint Sugar Ray. Hagler might have unpicked him, but we'll never know. A truly great fighter.

Hagler and Leonard had a chance, he definitely would have knocked out duran and hearns EASILY but with duran it's not a bragging right cause your talking about the greatest jr middle of all time against probably the greatest lightweight of all time. I don't mean to blow too much smoke but there is a possibility that he might have beat all of them, McCallum is a beast an all around great fighter and people can easily see it when they know their boxing. Either way Leonard and Hagler were the only ones with a chance along with terry norris and Benitez who would have been fun challenges also

Jackson was one of the hardest puncher of his division but he was not a technician in any meaningful way. He basically relied on his [devastating] punch--with both hands. And this is why, in this fight with McCallum, he went after McCallum right away, because McCallum is a boxer.
