In our first exclusive video with Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, the guitarist recounts writing the music for "Sirens," a single off of the band's 2013 Lightning Bolt album. McCready describes being influenced by a Roger Waters show in Seattle and shows how the various song parts came together.
For this video, McCready is playing his 1974 Martin D-28. In our next video, he'll walk us through the three 1959 guitars in the background, including his 1959 Gibson 'Burst on the far right. The Fretboard Journal is doing a big feature on McCready, out in early 2014.
Check us out at fretboardjournal.com. And don't forget to pick up our 24th issue, featuring a lengthy interview with PJ's Eddie Vedder.

I wish Mike mentioned more about the story of Sirens. Because the solo and the lyrics are soo deep. Mike is a perfect guitarist and a reef&solo somposer.

Absolutely love Mike McCready one of my favorite lead guitarist, insane solos!! I absolutely love the song Sirens it always makes me emotional every single time I hear it with Eddie beautiful and passionate lyrics. Love the Sirens video where Mike is playing regular guitar and then changes to a electric guitar for the solo and then Eddie plays a regular guitar, what a awesome song!!! Thank you for sharing this video 😊🤘✌️💓

Cool video. I've been trying to figure this song out and have seen many covers by others but it's great to see Mike break it down and give amateurs like me a chance to get it right. Thanks for sharing this!!

I think in a way Mike could be an amateur. The proper meaning of this word is about someone who does things for love, and even he is a pro, and had made a living with music, i think that he still do song just for the love of doing it. Maybe the first part, where he tell the story about the David Gilmour's concert, proof that. Even after he had became a "rockstar", he is still a fan, like we all are.

***** maybe the use is to have fun. Anyhow, i put rockstar between quotation marks. But I agree with you, PJ is not in the rockstar cliche. Moreover, what really my comment is about he is still a fan, and an amateur, which i explain in my first comment. :)

I've seen a lot of tabs and tutorials where they say he plays the traditional F Barre Chord during the chorus but here he is playing the easy version of the F. That's good news for us crappy guitar players.
@kokiramone
@kokiramone 9 жыл бұрын
Chris Hayward Yeah, I guess it's a much better version for beginners as well :). But in my opinion he don't really use that version because it's easy. As I think it depends on the most what the exact song needs. A fully sounding strong barre chord or a thinner lighter sounding version which has less low range.
@rebel1154
@rebel1154 9 жыл бұрын
I agree the Barred F chord sounds way better.
@MustObeyTheRules
@MustObeyTheRules 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Hayward I think he does play the full F Barre in the actual song, but when you're just messing around, why not just use the easier way.
@rebel1154
@rebel1154 7 жыл бұрын
IntrovertedLoner yeah, the barre chord is much tougher. When I'm playing a song that needs fast chord changes I always use the easier method. Most of the time.
@wernercolyn892
@wernercolyn892 2 жыл бұрын
He has the capo on the third. That is probably why he uses the easy version as the guitar already sounds thinner.

I'm curious as to why a Taylor doesn't hold it's own when writing a song? I have a Martin and a Taylor and to me it's music with both.....it's just songwriting! Chords...strum away! I play a high action Stella at times...who cares?

It’s sort of gives a false impression when he said he wrote the song... when I heard that I assumed it meant he wrote the lyrics and the melody too but then later in the interview it sounds like Eddie wrote that part...anyone else get that vibe?
@markmorris8532
@markmorris8532 24 күн бұрын
I've heard many songwriters use the term, "I wrote the song", and some seem to mean the melody, and some mean the whole song. I've even heard the lyricist use that term. It seems to be used interchangeably. I'd prefer they were more succinct, but I guess you can't school the whole of the music industry to our "druthers" 🤷‍♀️

Without Eddie Vedder coming up with not just the lyrics but more importantly the melodic structure for the lyrics we're just left with basic chords.
