Mike Mentzer shares his experience in reducing his calorie intake below maintenance levels and increasing his activity levels to burn body fat. Also presented is a news report on an experiment by a university professor that supported Mentzer's theory that one can lose fat -- even on a bad diet -- if one reduces one's calorie input below one's maintenance levels. Food for thought.

The reason you don't typically eat junk food on a diet is more that it isn't satiating. Eating huge salad worth 400 calories makes you feel fuller then 3 tiny cookies. I agree though about not eating carbs in a diet. I never could diet without eating some carbs. Mike Mentzer was presumably on something that helped him with his appetite or just had amazing self-control. Riding a bike for 40 miles and weightlifting on 1800 calories is no joke. It is actually an incredible feat.

Also because junk food does not contain a lot of important micronutrients (minerals and vitamins) that are essential for proper bodily functions. Things like magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, choline, etc. Along with an excess of things like trans fats, sugar and sodium. Eating nothing but junk food would destroy your blood profile

Satiation is not about filling your belly. Food has to taste good. I prefer a piece of cake with coffee than a pound of boiled broccoli. The first gives me energy, tastes good and doesnt bloat me, while the latter would do the opposite.

Wow he really was a head of his time and actually embarrassing that to this day people still don't understand the concept he was explaining. @@sugarcooki03 And it would unhealthy to eat nothing but pure sugar, which is why Mike said in the video "I'm not advocating that" but was, instead, making the point "theoretically" that if you are eating less calories than you require to maintain your present weight (your maintenance need of calories) your body will use your stored body fat to make up the difference, even if the calories you are consuming come from sugar.
@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE 2 жыл бұрын
@@infinity697 Your body needs sugar (glucose) to function properly. As Mike pointed out, if you don't get enough sugar in your diet, your body will manufacture its own by converting protein to glucose. So, not only does sugar NOT make it harder to lose fat, it's actually a necessary part of the fat loss process -- to the point that if you don't provide it, your body will manufacture it. Over consuming energy (calories) makes it harder to lose fat. This is true whether you're on steroids or not as you are still possessed of human physiology, which means all of us burn fat the same way.

This channel paired with the wisdom of Mike Mentzer is honestly reinvigorating my desire to get healthy and fit. I've tried the keto diet, extreme fasting, and HIIT workouts until I was queasy with little result and all of this time I could've been enjoying myself with a couple of short, intense resistance workouts and a little more effort in the way of counting my calories. I feel dumb, but at the same time smart for educating myself and having the willingness to pick myself up to try again. Thank you, John Little!

One thing I realized is that in America we often become accustomed from a young age to eating 4000 to 5000 calories a day-which cannot be sustained in older age. But anecdotally, I am noticing Golden Age bodybuilders knew this important and simple point-you just don’t need that much food. Mentzer, Zane, Robby Robinson, all ate about 2500 calories or less to get where they did. I don’t know where the 6000 to 10000 calories diets are coming from. Personally, I do not handle carbohydrates well, but if they work for someone, then the benefit athletically is an edge.

Rather than just convert the audio to MP3, I thought a better way to preserve them would be to couple them with video and store them in my computer. Calories deficit is the only way you want to lose body fats. But the type of foods you eat also factor in your calorie deficit. For me, it is so easy to exceeds my calories intake if I solely focus on eating carbs. So it is why I opted for low carbs diet where I feel more satiated eating high proteins and fats meal and still inside calorie deficit. When I am on high carbs, it is so easy to over-eat because I do not feel fulfilled and eventually ate more.

I agree with calorie counting. I used to do the bullshit 6 small meals a day. High protein low carb. I was always tired. Then I tried the one meal a day diet. No breakfast. No lunch. One very big dinner which is 80% carbs 20% protein. So I ate pizza pasta burgers. When you starve yourself for 23 hours, your body is running on bodyfat for fuel. And there are no post lunch sleepiness. I dropped bodyfat really quickly.

The problem with eating a high-carb diet is carbs don't satisfy your hunger, and they are high-calorie foods. It doesn't take a lot of carb eating to burn through your daily caloric intake. A good workaround is eating your vegetables, which are low in calories and high in fiber They will give you the nutrition you need and the fiber you need, and kill your appetite

Well yes, you can lose weight eating whatever you want as long as you're in a deficit, but if you're not eating sufficient amounts of protein and essential micronutrients, you will not perform well in the gym and this will lead to lost muscle as well. My take on diet is to eat 85-90% clean nutrient dense foods. With the rest, you can eat whatever you like. Ice cream, burgers, etc. Been doing this for so long and I'm always in control of my body and performance in the gym. I use cronometer to make sure my diet hits all my micro's and usually I don't even eat any cheat foods on a day to day basis. Maybe once every 2-3 weeks I'll order some chicken teriyaki or some ice cream.

I believe the 1000 calories less than maintenance is a bit much for most people
@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE Жыл бұрын
It may well be. But that is why everyone should figure out their own maintenance need of calories and start out gradually by reducing to, say, 500 cal below maintenance levels initially. Then make the decision as to whether or not it’s worthwhile to reduce the calories further, or attempt to make up the differential by burning calories through activity levels.

Taken from Bleed for This which is based on a true story of boxer Vinny Pazienza. A reporter is talking to a boxer named, Vinny Pazienza. I've never forgotten this wisdom. Reporter: What's the biggest lie they ever told you? Vinny: It's not that simple. Reporter:Why not? Vinny: No. That's the biggest lie I was ever told, "It's not that simple." It's the lie they tell you over and over again. Reporter: So what's the truth. Vinny: That it is and it always was. Body building is very simple, but we over complicate it. Mike Mentzer understood this. It's really quite simple. Lift and tear the muscle down. Eat a balanced diet and recover and your body has to grow. If you need to lose fat..eat a balanced diet, but have a caloric deficit.That is all there is to it. It is that simple.

With a body like that and regular training we can use carbs for energy but protein and hypertrophy are necessary on any diet for muscle maintenance. All sugar diet is just for name sake comparison.

I wish more folks would focus on gaining IQ points than losing body fat. BTW: Mike was one of the few science-minded folks like myself (the physics professor who has also taught both chemistry and biochemistry) that instead of listening to the diet idiots go on about losing weight: suggested gaining weight in the form of muscle to lose weight in the form of fat. The resting muscle craves fat for energy. Interestingly, the calorie that nutrition gurus talk about is actually kilocalories (kcal) or what we call the big cal (Cal).

I've actually lived this way for a majority of my life. Caloric deficit. Of course i also do not advocate a pure sugar diet. However, the numbers do not lie. If you're consuming less than, you will lose mass. A reason why "skinny" ppl can eat bad things and never gain weight. He explained it. We don't hit our surplus in calories, therefore it's burned. If you only get a cake, but that cake is 800 under your daily needs. You'll have burned 800. Simple math.

You will lose fat a lot faster than you will put on muscle. 10 lbs muscle equates to 12 grams of protein eaten a day for a year. Mentzer mentioned losing more than 2-3 lbs of fat a week is unhealthy and you should be cautious as you may be losing muscle and/or sick. Everyone is different. If it’s working for you, continue to gain knowledge and seek the truth, your body will tell you if it works or not. Swimming will help more than running long distance will. Also a calorie counting book he was an advocate for 5 days of everything you eat divided by 5 to get your daily average. If you lose or gain weight after this then that’s also your daily maintenance level. What’s needs to maintain your existing physical mass at optimal level at that time, it will change as your change as well.

Hormones is the pink elephant. It decides whether your metabolism will store those calories as fat or muscle. Stay deficient very long, and your metabolism will retract with the reduced calories. The metabolism is made to survive famines, not designed to win contests.
