Yes! I have to roll my eyes when I see comments about pro athletes, musicians etc... being born with talent. It's almost all work ethic. It's the hours of grind that builds the confidence so they can flow.

@@m.bird. Dude, I grew up playing competitive ice hockey. There are people who mostly cover it with talent. They're few and far between, but some people don't have to work that much at it. In sports, it might be a little easier because you're on a team, and you have to be at practice and play all the games, while musicians often don't have anyone telling them to do anything. Self-motivation is more important.

It puts me in sort of a trance like sedation when I listen to them. Live or at home. Tool always takes me on a journey inside my mind to a place I didn’t know existed. Tool is like mushrooms every time you listen/eat them it always takes you on a different trip through your own subconsciousness.

I don't think there's very many people who could sit down in an afternoon and just figure out a working, great-sounding drum track for music this challenging. But he did it! This guy inspired me for many years, and I even started to learn the drums by buying his instructional DVD many years ago! If you want to learn drums, go find it because it's a phenomenal foundation if in-person lessons aren't really an option. Today, my wife and I own a music school, and I owe it to Mike for helping me find my way as a musician/screwed up high school kid back in the day.

It just speaks volumes to how damn good Danny is that Mike REALLY struggled to get any kind of hold on this song in the 3ish hours he worked on it. He couldn't pick any time signatures until he saw the sheet music and even then it took him awhile to wrap his head around it. Learning the actual drum parts was just out of the question for a single video unless he took it away for a couple weeks to really dig into (which I would LOVE to see, to be honest).

That gap in the drums is wonderfully placed. The guitar comes back in with the original riff, but much heavier. The drums being silent give the guitar its moment to burst through and do its thing. One of my favourite pauses in any song.
