2 жыл бұрын** Mike is racing north trying to beat the massive rain storm that is on its way to the north farm. Just trying to get some of this grass broke and see what kind of a job it will do before it rains if possible, that way he can make plans on whether or not he thinks he can get it broke good enough to seed for this year.
Also spoiler alert:
This rain storm dropped like 6in or so up north and back home we get 5 tenths! 😆🤷♂️

I'd recommend Tannerite to remove the dams but with so many of them it would be more expensive than a backhoe.

Mike Your health and safety are paramount.. Whilst Coffee will get you so far... a decent night sleep will do wonders. Look after yourself.. There are multiple fields...but only ONE Mike and we kinda sorta need him !!! (For Awesome KZfaq content)

My father was the man on discs. He broke in a lot of country some very steep all with bulldozers. He used to pull a set of large chain harrows behind, they must have weighed over a ton. He would change how far behind they were depending on how badly the ground needed levelling, then on second pass he often towed a roller. Mind you this was steep country and he had his moments. Personally I don't have a clue, I just know that discs are amazing machines in the right conditions.

Get that 120 hrs . used to do it all the time putting in crop and harvesting. Then carried on into trucking. Nap power naps can do wonders

It’s funny how different soils deal with water. Here in Michigan if we get a inch of rain we are out of the fields for acouple days and then we can go back to heavy tillage.

Good to see you at the north farm. I break a lot of new land and then rent it out . My favourite go to tools ... D6 cat , 308 cat hoe , seppi tiller , rome disk , JD 2680 hi speed , 927 fendt . The degelman and JD hi speeds are very capable tools .

Y'all got much boulders over there??? Or is it so many trees and thick roots? Because of the d6 cat. Or maybe that's something common over there. Here in Sweden i haven't even seen a bouldozer on a farm. There ain't so many farms that has a digger.

@@spectralducklin a lot of farms in northern sask have Dozers and excavators to clear land and pull equipment out when its stuck to the frame lol, thats why we have a D6 hahaa.

I watch and genuinely love all of your videos Mike and I particularly enjoyed this one, HOWEVER, it did make me worry a little bit for you. Given how hard you’ve been working on the seeding, very little sleep, driving 600km, starting to disc a new field in the middle of the night on your own, THAT DISTANCE away from home😬.. I don’t suppose you carry a lone worker tracker in case you get into difficulty?

Need a 30 ft then high speed once or twice. Ontario guy here finished planting corn and beans. Dads girlfriends from swift. I would love to work out there work a few weeks. I can run 16 hrs days but that’s my max.

Did you think of spraying 1.5 liters of round up and seeding directly into the grad. Done here 1 hour west of Lloydminister on gras and works well. Seeded Oates or canola works the best

Yes, 9x out of 10 I always spray it, and I ll seed some direct too for comparison.. Glad I didn't spray it early tho, because it's sucking the moisture out which after 9in if rain is blessing lol

As I farmer I proudly support DU and Peasents Forever. I have seen the damage that my elders did to the land (I don't blame them Cuz they didn't no a better way). Nearly all of our natural wetland in the area were tiled. Our drainage was causing erosion. Blanket spraying was too expensive and bad for the water. There's are reason not a single lake in SW MN is not safe to swim in from runoff. As farmers we need to care for our land to help wildlife, improve soil health, all while improving yield and making more money.

Ducks unlimited is a terrible organization that doesnt give a shit about ducks and other animals. Theyre similar to PETA. Theyve ruined good farm land all over ihr province and in other provinces and countries. Our RMs and other governments are going after them for illegal water blocking and otber stuff. I wish that organization would disappear like a bad day.

Looks like very good ground! Aren't the dams made to retain the water for as long as possible so that you can also benefit from it in the dry season? and does it not prevent the water drain from rinsing too deeply?

No farmer in sask wants water damed up on their land. We want it to run off and dry out so we can seed it all. Standing water on fields is a pain in the ass, plus its let's cattails and other weeds grow

When breaking unfarmed land around here it actually works better to leave the growth on it. It helps breaking discs and deep tillings tools bite into the ground better and do a nicer job at least in my experiences it has

@@carterk116 Uk can have wetter summers so the grass can keep growing , it’s best to deal with it straight away 🤷♂️ I’ve seen it sprayed off after drilling as well , but sodds can be inverted so no good spraying the roots .

@@robhall9599 The grass in North sask will stay growing and thriving all the way until mid September it’s a completely different climate compared to mikes south farm lol. It’s actually not uncommon for our pea crops to drown out in June where I farm from the amount of rain we can get. Like I said I just prefer to keep it green does a nicer job in my opinion 👍🏻

@@carterk116 sask is 2.7 times larger than Uk ! We mainly go for yields here , 10 tonne/ha winter wheat , so weed competition is paramount to us. Our climate will not be as extreme and Canada’s , we rarely get winters like we used to , just wet weather. A large field here will be in hundreds of acres not thousands. Wonder how many acres an hour a large drill will cover over there ? Does Mike ever sleep in busy times ?

Our hay is going to be late this year we have had 10 inches of rain this month and it will rain for a day or 2 then take a break for maybe 3 then repeat like my yard sounds like walking on a wet sponge I mowed it Monday and it hadn't rained for 2 days and was still getting my tires wet and not cutting flat

@@mikemitchell2554 You are a wise farmer.....Albeit, it is hard to see how thick the sod is, but I have seen an example where a farmer sprayed his 10-yr old alfalfa field right after his second cut. He applied a 2nd application of Round-Up the following spring and then direct seeded the field with wheat. Excellent crop and the field was never exposed to wind/water erosion.

Your probably a better farmer than me Mike but I would say if you want to keep your topsoil on the field (should be a legal requirement) you need to use drain tile to remove water. Once that soil has washed away it won’t come back

Mike can probably confirm, but drainage tile is expensive and normally only used in land that is under irrigation and/or high rainfall areas with a long growing season so that you can grow high-valued crops (cost benefit economics). Irrigation Districts in southern Alberta does have some tiling as well as southern Manitoba.

Lots of comments Re: Ducks Unlimited. I can reinforce the following, low Duck population (s) is much more dependent on climate change (drought) than hunting and/or loss of habitat from farmers draining a few sloughs.

You haven't even touched your existing north farm which I hope you get seeded before you put any more time and effort into attempting to turn this back into productive farmland. And for God's sake spend some time with your wife and son. You think you're going to have so much time during the summer but before you know it the combines will be running at the south farm.

I’ve been direct seeding cereals with a disc drill into old 20 year old hay ground. Sprayed last fall and pre seed burn. No moles so fields are still smooth. Been growing decent crops this way other then grasshoppers and too dry last year

Probably a couple hundred thousand in donations spent developing habitat on this farm then a decade later, " Nah, we dont want it any more, might as well be farmland." The hunting must not have been as good as they hoped . Natural duck habitat all over the place in that area .

The problem is that they go ahead guns blazing to change the landscape. Alter natural runs, create new dams, all of which will require some form of oversight in the future. Then 10-20 years down the line they wash their hands of the projects which then fall into some state of disrepair, washed out dams, leaks, invasive weed growths etc and the surrounding land users are the one who will end up shouldering the work and expense to mitigate the problems.

Mike, seems with 40,000 acres down south you'd have enough land to farm also a few more up north. Duck nesting grounds are very important for their survival. Yes, I am a duck hunter.

That might true and i have nothing against the Ducks or Robin's or any other bird, but there is millions of acres for them, infact only 7% of Canada can actually be farmed - according to Stats Canada..

@Mike Mitchell yes but farming is not everything and in fact we in the big infustrial nations have more than enough food but waste about 30-40% of it because it gets thrown away because it doesn’t get bought. So if we would reduce waste, we would have more than enough food to also feed some of them people in poor countries like some countries in Africa

@@uwebehrend9734 that's true there is a alot waste and not just in North America, 3rd countries actually can waste more due to the poor loading facilities. They literally just dump on the ground and then the rats and dogs get to it

Heaven forbid an organization legally does whatever they want with their land! Don’t even try claiming that they illegally damned the waterways! You know dang well the local farmers would’ve been crying for the government to stop them! Nobody forced you to rent that land!
