A man who needs no introduction...we have a great one for you today with an extended version of this episode and more to come during the week!
In a rare sit down appearance, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach, Mike Tomlin joins The Pivot for a candid conversation talking about impactful moments over the years and sharing untold stories from Super Bowls to coaching dynamic players to inside look of being the NFL's only current black Head Coach.
Ryan, who played for Coach Tomlin, reminisces through their Super Bowl runs and legendary defense the team assembled in the late 2000's while Fred is eager to ask the question of why Coach didn't try to sign him when he became a free agent after all those high yardage games at Heinz Field. In awe of the relationship Mike T has developed his with the men who played for him, Channing enviously asks what is the secret to earning the respect of all and never having a losing season in 15 years.
Continuing the conversation, the guys get into minority hiring around the league and how Brian Flores ended up as part of the current staff after controversy surrounded his release. Coach Tomlin says it was never the intent but describes the addition as a win for the organization to have Flores apart of the coaching regime.
Ryan talks about some of his former Steeler Teammates and asks the specifically noting that this will be the first time in 15 seasons that Tomlin has coached the Steelers he has always had Big Ben at the helm to run his offense and how the team will move forward.
In a lighter moment, Channing asks about the infamous Jacoby Jones return interference which cost Mike T a 100K fine in 2013 as we get the play by play of what really happened that day.
Admiring the legacy Tomlin has formed, Fred, Channing and Ryan all share something special they take from their conversation and the mutual respect they have for his impact on the game.
The Pivot releases new episodes every Tuesday at noon eastern with special drops on Fridays at 3pm est. Audio versions available on Spotify, Apple and all other major platforms.

I would have watched it even if it was 3 hours. Great show and I always had respect for Tomlin, even though he stepped out on the field in Jacoby's path (Ravens fan). But the respect n how he coaches and what you hear from the players he coached/coaches shows he is a great man.

This is the greatest sports interview I have ever seen. I have learned more about Coach Tomlin and been given greater insight into his coaching and leadership style than 1000 other interviews with him. I'm appreciative of Coach T's openness and forthrightness. In this interview he demonstrates not only what a great coach should be like, but what a great leader and human being should be like. I have always respected Mike Tomlin but seeing this intimate view of him has raised my respect into the stratosphere for him. Looking forward to seeing what the Steelers do this year and looking forward to the day when Mike Tomlin is awarded a gold jacket. I don't want it to come too quickly though, as I want to see him coach the Steelers for decades to come. Go coach T and Go Steelers!

Some of his quotes have wonderful application to not just coaching, but teaching, parenting, managing people, etc. Solid life advice in general. Mike T is the best coach in NFL by his integrity passion for game and his character to mold these guys as men off field then players! If I have a young man coming out of college I want to have him taught by this legend whom I have so much respect for he’s so real and genuine I T drives me crazy to hear fire him cause we didn’t win a playoff game it’s not just about that it’s about the young men he is molding he cares so much about his guys that’s number one for him

Every time I catch an interview with Coach Tomlin that I am reminded he was our 34 year-old DC when Pittsburgh asked to interview him to replace Cowher. I was aware at the time both Noll and Cowher were 34 when the Steelers named them HC...and yet, our front office couldn't make the connection. He set our Dline up for a strong run, and he's consistently had the Steelers in contention - no matter how banged up or how far down the depth chart they are. I wish we had a coach that just chilled out in his basement with a couple Lombardis casually on display.

Taking the team he had this year with a rookie qb and not the most talented roster and barely missing the playoffs after a 2-6 start shows how great he is. I've been a lifelong Steelers fan and watched Tomlin his whole career with the team. I always wondered what magic he had to be able to get mediocre at best teams to overperform (and that's no diss to Tomlin or any of the squads he's had, that's just the way the NFL is designed, no team is supposed to always be good, the Pats dynasty was a freakish exception to the rule) and now hearing him talk and explain his philosophy in detail I get it, it isn't just that he's a dude that NFL players would run through a wall for, that's obviously part of it, but he's a master in a way I never really grasped until now and building a crazy level of chemistry (which is really impressive with some of the distractions the poor guy has had to deal with) to the point that elevated some of these teams to a higher level of play than they should reasonably have been able to see. That's an incredibly unique skill being able to forge a collective so strong they're able to play above and beyond what they should reasonably have been able to do. He might have his weak spots, like literally every other great coach, but holy shit I thought I got it before but watching this....it makes sense now. No wonder Tomlin is the one coach that basically everyone wants to play with at least once before they retire, I would too shit..

Hands down, this is one of the best sports interviews I’ve ever seen. Ryan, Fred and Channing did a phenomenal job of asking insightful questions that allowed Coach Tomlin to share some amazing stories. When you consider all the great veterans on the 2009 Super Bowl team (e.g. Debo, Troy, etc.) and then hear Coach T say he went to Lamar Woodley to turn the tide in the quarter in SB XLIII, his ability to bring out the best in his players puts him the rarefied air of great coaches/leaders.

It's a combination of being used to having consistent success (through winning seasons), yet falling short in the era of Belichick, Brady, and Peyton. REAL Steelers fans will, like the organization, stand by him. He just signed a new contract and you know that even if he goes 1-15 this year, the first without Ben, the organization is standing by him. The Rooneys don't fire. I'm too young to remember the decade-plus of no Superbowls under Noll, but I remember the lean years with Cowher. I remember the frustrations after the championship game losses, and the gnashing of teeth over "wasting" great teams. But Cowher never had a QB until Ben. If he had a QB, Cowher would've won 3 Superbowls. I still believe that. Tomlin has been GREAT at making mediocre teams great over a period of time with Ben. I think that if he had won that 2nd Superbowl, the squawking would be less. But....now he has to emulate what Cowher did: keep the team competitive without a QB. I think he can do it, but it might be a rough few years until he finds the right formula...but he can definitely do it.
