This was great. Another observation is that Max tells El that Mike will probably come back apologizing and beg to be taken back, which doesn’t happen. But he does do something very similar with Will in the rain scene.

also when mike says “I love her and I can’t lose her again” in season 3, he pulls the same face of regret he does when he pushes Will to dance with a girl in season 2. Also when El says “I love you too” and kisses him. we do see mike infront of an open closet, eyes open and a look of discomfort and confusion after. I think that was his awakening of the platonic love that he feels for eleven, and that in season 4 we see him discover his romantic love for will.

for the part where mike lies to el about what hopper said, i always interpreted that as- mike isn’t honest with her because he doesn’t truly want to be with her. if he did he would probably just have told el, hey! ur dad said this to me, and everything would’ve probably worked out somehow, but Mike sees what Hopper told him; subconsciously or not, as an out of him and El’s relationship. Which is why he takes it so easily.

I think Eleven's color is purple as well And the way you connected and explained Hopper's letter with Byler scenes is just so good!! :D

Maybe the reason Mike lies is that deep down he knows he's not in love with El and if he tells the truth the problem can be fixed (and they'll keep spending a lot of time together) but if he lies it gives him a break from the charade. And maybe the reason he doesn't seem to know what he did wrong is because he's thinking of El as a girlfriend, not a person. Besides that, his role model for that situation is his dad (who in season 1 just calls "What'd I do?" as Karen walks away, clearly mad at him for not supporting her).

my second comment on this video- ignoring that, when i first saw the scene where will told his mom "I'm not gonna fall in love" i found it really relatable and lo and behold, I'm aro/ace :) that personal connection made it kinda hard for me to see byler and even will's queer coding until season 4 but i think the queercoding is really well done

I also notice this within byler and lumax.. The same music plays in a scene with lumax and then with byler. and then as the conversation gets more serious it zooms in closer, happens in both a lumax scene and a byler scene. the scenes are just EXACTLY the same. I'm so happy that you're back. I understand life can get a bit hectic. Totally fine. Really love your analysis vids. I remember feeling the sheer utter whiplash of going through S2 and seeing how close Will and Mike were to S3 where it feels like a brick wall is between them. Because everything just felt so drastically different. So different that unless it was purposeful didn't make sense to me. Especially with Mike. Everything about the rain scene hurts me to my core. Although I did wish that they had actually continued Will and Mike's storyline. Everyone else had their storylines continue. But it felt like theirs got cut short after episode 3 and was semi resolved in the finale. Though, that could be intentional but I dunno. I've kinda always felt like S3 feels like a big disconnect season in the storyline of Mike and Will. Even taking Mike away from Will, his character just feels a bit bare if you're only looking at him from a surface level. He goes from leader in S1, supportive best friend in S2, and then S3 it feels like his role is to just be El's boyfriend. This is one of the reasons why I've always been into digging deeper into Mike's character because the train tracks don't add up to the destination we arrived at sometimes when you're just looking at the map. And I totally agree with your idea that Jonathan knows. Upon rewatch, Jonathan always seems to be around or watching Mike and Will during important moments. Especially in the later seasons. And his expressions during those scenes give off the vibes that wheels are turning in his head.

you are literally a byler mastermind i love it. also idk if anyone else has mentioned it in the comments but during the kiss scene between mike and el where mike is in front of the closet, they are in will room i think and the walls are y e l l o w. also el is holding a teddy bear that came fromt he closet and i've seen some people say that the teddy bear represents will because it probably belonged to him since it was in his room and 'in the closet'. i find it interesting that the whole time they are kissing the bear is between them, as if to represent will coming between them. i think i also read something in the byler slides about bears representing will like the colour yellow but idk too much about that. amazing video!!!

Firstly, I must say these are very interesting connections you have made. I never noticed any of them, which shows how I am oblivious to everything apparently. But about Mike's emotional maturity thing, I would argue that it does make sense for it to be "inconsistent," as you say. Personally, I can be extremely emotionally mature about some things, but then in other situations, I can be very oblivious. I think that is normal for humans to be that way. Sometimes we do things that just don't make sense to other people, but its because we just didn't have awareness of those things at the time. We can never have awareness of everything, thats why we need other people to tell us when we do something wrong. Maybe girls don't feel that way, idk, maybe they are more emotionally mature. That's just how I feel, that awareness can be so drastically different at different times. In DnD, they have a "perception" stat, and sometimes you have to roll for perception, and one time my character rolled really low on perception even though she is a highly perceptive character, and missed out on information that she would have otherwise been the only one in the group to figure out lol. Anyway, so Mike being oblivious to what he did wrong with El made sense to me just because he is a teenager and growing up is hard. This could mean that he only feels platonically toward El, especially because he has had a hard time saying that he loves her. However, it could also be interpreted that its just him being afraid of his newly developing feelings. Once I realized Will was gay, I was really excited to see him pair up with someone which I hope will happen in the show. But I was thinking "who will this new character be? Will it be an entirely new character in season 5?" When I thought about this, I thought it doesn't make sense that he would meet someone new and fall in love with them all in one season and have a happy ending wrapped up so quickly. Especially after being heartbroken by Mike. But it also didn't make sense that he would be paired with any current character. So I was curious. Now, the idea that he could actually be paired up with Mike makes me really happy. I think if Mike is queer it would make sense but if he is straight it would also make sense. I'm excited to find out. That being said, these types of feelings are really hard to write with children. Feelings like this are really confusing to children (at least in my experience) so it's hard to write being in love as a child. Its completely possible for people to fall in love as children and end up together for the rest of their lives. But its really hard to identify those feelings as a child, so things can change drastically. Its really interesting, what can children be aware of romantically, and how does that progress? It varies wildly depending on who you ask.

my take on "i dump your ass" scene is that it was supposed to be comedic because it's not a serious break up, it's almost manipulative since later on max and el talk about how mike will crawl back apologizing (or smth like that i dont remember specifically) they are just teenagers after all, i remember my classmates used to break up with their lovers all the time and i never understood it. also it's super weird to me that it took mike so long to apologize to el but with will not only he says sorry immediately but follows him and tries again, it feels like with every one else he keeps finding excuses and kind of blames it on the other party but with will he's always ready to take the blame. and it's peculiar to me that mike and will's fight was taken seriously and el and mike's wasn't. btw it's not about mike and will but i wonder if later on lucas is so apologetic to will because he was reminded what will went through and maybe picked up on the fact that will is just missing the old times that he wasn't really around for and didn't get enough of. lmao your "am i crazy" hits close to home. i've been through klance and so many things just made sense about them and then it wasn't real. but if mike isn't queer coded then it's just super weird really.
