a lot of people read the Second Amendment and they tried to use the word militia as a military organization but if you get into the people who wrote the Constitution and the Second Amendment and read what they say about what the word militia means get back to me

Right....like the US Army or SWAT or even regular police couldn't take out you and your gun within seconds with still vastly superior firepower and training. You're still a subject. And I'm pro-gun to protect ourselves but don't kid yourself that you're some special citizen above all these subjects simply because you have a gun.

In many scenarios, an armed society is more peaceful. Polite might be a stretch. However, when muggers and robbers know that there is a chance the random citizen right next to them is carrying a weapon, they would be less likely to threaten that person or another innocent person within their view. The problem with America is people are growing up not learning that actions have consequences, and instead are learning that if you follow the right ideology and say the right words, you can get away with anything that would not be true on the opposite side. People lack introspection and don't know how to put themselves in the other person's shoes. And quite frankly, people have become extremely sociopathic and self-centered. America doesn't have a armed society problem, they have a mental health problem. National crisis levels of that problem.

I have to applaud this professor. Regardless of his stance on the second amendment, he allowed the respectful exchange/discussion without much steering or direction. As for the student, she’s a reason for hope for the next generation.

I've watched a few videos from this professor and to be honest its hard to pin down what he actually believes. Usually he plays a contrarian to whatever a student may say and he does a pretty good job of it in my opinion.

@@ronlackey2689 yeah…I’ve watched a good bit of his lectures. He does that routine to everyone. It’s on KZfaq, it’s for entertainment to some degree to get engagement out of KZfaq and his students. That’s the whole point. I’m not saying he’s not anti gun. But try to actually be unbiased and watch a few non cherry picked videos.

I went back to college in my late 20s and got my BS. I went to an EXTREMELY liberal college and as a Conservative, I gotta say, it was bad. I had ONE openly Conservative professor in 5 semesters before I graduated and he was the only one who actually wanted his students to think critically. All the others had such a liberal agenda, I swear to you, I felt like an undercover spy in a Nazi propaganda school. My last semester I took an Advocacy & Argument class and my group had to debate gun control. Thankfully, we were the final debate and I was the pro-2A advocate. I researched for a month to get it perfect: I crafted my debate specifically to get the entire room engaged & set them up for to trap them in my point. I even researched the points the other side was most likely going to try to use to leverage my plan so by the time they got to it, I had already hit the 3-pointer from mid-court. It was brilliant and by the time I was finished, almost every liberal in that room had this look on their faces like they just discovered they'd been lied to their entire lives. Did I change anybody's opinion? Probably not. But at least I was able to make those kids think critically.

Exactly! My sociology professor at USC, who was a liberal, Jewish, NYU educated woman was fantastic. She would bring up big picture issues all the time and make students team up and argue ideas opposite their own, from across the political spectrum. It was really fun and I’d hire a million teachers like her.

Listened to an interview on NPR today of a teacher who survived the mass shooting in Uvalde. He instructed the students in the classroom to hide under tables when the shots began ringing out. Did the same himself. He got shot twice and his students are dead. Seemed like a real nice guy. Wonder if he will go get some training.

That's just called "property rights." You own your body, so you own your labor, and the product of your labor. Voluntary trade of your labor and the product of your labor is the basis for all economics. "My body my choice" is a false claim that a baby that you voluntarily put in your body is your property. A child isn't property, and you can be criminally charged for not properly protecting them.

Being criminally charged for not properly protecting your child is an irrelevant point because that is a post-birth issue. And just a side note....you could be charged for neglect/abuse, not for improperly protecting. They are not the same.

A lot of people don't get the depth of need. That's why they don't understand semi-auto rifles and carbines. They don't understand that to hit three armed men breaking down your door with a six shot revolver is damn near impossible unless you train constantly and are just naturally cool under pressure. For normal person who goes to the range every couple months or less, the only gun that's going to work there is something with a large capacity, multiple points of contact so you can keep it steady while you're trembling and have an easier time aiming. That's an AR-15 or a pistol caliber carbine. A high capacity semi-auto handgun is bare bare minimum for home defense. Shotgun is better if you're well trained. Semi-auto rifle or PCC best. You can spaz 10 shots out & still have 20 in the mag once you calm down a bit.

I actually had a debate in my sociology class similar to this. The class was much smaller, maybe 30 students, and the professor was a complete anti-firearm, anti-2A, card carrying liberal. And the person I debated, was him. It was incredible! We were both very civil and had a great, slow, debate using facts and logic. He actually stated to the class that he might be wavering in his beliefs about firearms after that debate. I had no time to prepare either, but I was a well informed individual with a passion for firearms, also a combat veteran that is not afraid to debate a professor. He congratulated me in front of the class and again in private for doing an outstanding job. Small victories.

He is actually a brilliant professor from the videos I've seen of him. I haven't seen him express his opinions but rather he questions his students as to what THEY think and why it is they have come to that conclusion. In my book, that's exactly what a professor should be doing!

Incorrect. The Military uses them. I.E. M16, M4 etc. They are Select Fire weapons that can shoot semi-auto, like an AR15, or Full-Auto (or 3 round burst) . Assault WEAPON is the made-up buzzword.

This professor is excellent. He wasn't schooled by anyone. He's great at delivering facts and challenging students misconceptions and misinformation. Independent thinker and tries to generate more informed, critical thinkers.

No, he's not. He's smug, opinionated and predisposed and just doing cleanup because it didn't go the way he thought. Universities and colleges have become nothing but A-hole factories that teach their students to hate their country. That started way back in ithe late 50's, early 60's. These geniuses keep throwing the second amendment into some type of hunting discussion as if the founders had just returned from some hunting expedition instead of conquering the greatest military power on earth at that time.

@@markb9896 Armalite Rifle was invented and release to the general public in the late 1950s. Its a civilian grade all purpose rifle used in hunting, target shooting and self defense. Its semi auto only and it look style and how it handles inspired the US military to invent the M16 and use it in Vietnam. It is the most popular rifle used in NA and only counts for 2-3% of all violent crime. Of course I know you know this but this info is what I repeat to idiots who thing the "Assault Rifle 15" is some evil mass murdering super weapon when its not. They also don't know the difference between a rifle and assault rifle. SO I usually explain that to and they call me names and so I want people to be not alived. These people are insane.

The main point she neglected to bring up, when asked about restrictions on gun ownership, is the fact that criminals ignore ALL laws, including gun control laws, and it’s only law abiding citizens that are realistically kept from acquiring guns, leaving them at the mercy of criminals. Other than that, this young lady did an incredible job.

I am a DAV wia in VietNam 1969. the 2nd amendment is of course one of the things I fought for. Our right to have a gun if we choose. I do not carry or hunt but do have a few guns in my house and I do support maintaining our rights as American citizens.

This professor actually did a great job. We need more of these types of people, who can encourage and maintain a civil conversation. As a "debate" moderator, it is extremely notable that I couldn't really detect his attitudes on guns, and gun control. He asked some very good questions, listened carefully to the answers, and let both sets of students talk and ask and converse. And then pointed out a very important question that was missed - thus dispelling at least one very pervasive (and inaccurate) stereotype. If the moderators of the last few national presidential debates could match his professionalism, that would be a win. But they can't resist the biased spin, and I can't bring even an ounce of respect to the table for these journalistic pretenders. Kudos to the professor.

Look, i know that America has done a lot of great things in the past and for the relatively short history of the country, a lot has happened, but just be real and accept that it's most definitely not. I have always said, let's pass a law that gives the controllers what they want. Then we amend a part that makes the bill only apply to them in a public register along with their home address and picture if they have advocated for the gun control or been affiliated like been part of a party that advocates for it in maybe the last 5 years. See how well they react to that, if it adds protection to society, they should have more of that protection first.

Came here to say this. I don't mind beer being at their Club, but save it until after. Ours has a strict rule that if you get caught having a beer beforehand you can't come back. But our serves beer with dinner from the kitchen you can order AFTER you shoot your round of trap.

Gen X Marine her. There is literally not a room in my house without a loaded firearm. So I’m with you. As far as children shouting themselves as one of the people asked here in the comments. If you teach them young they respect them. My children had their own cricket from the age of 6. It was in the safe but it was theirs. They shot pop bottles full of water with their little 22’s and they saw the damage it did. They were smart enough to understand.

@@zackiebullock3614 None of those things define the term "right" as in your right to self preservation. 1. this is a synonym for correct. 2. this is a statement of position; the validity of a position or action. 3. physical manipulation. If a right is something guaranteed by a higher power, it can be taken away by a higher power, and thus it is not a right, it is a privilege. Your statement about moral grounds is an appeal to authority, and assuming that a god is what is moral and thus the authority for the right. The founders said "endowed by their Creator" but they did not say god. No where in the US Constitution does it say god. Claiming that a god gave you your rights because they are right is circular. Is the right valid because a god said it is valid? Then it is not a right, it is a privilege. If a god says that the right is valid because it is already valid, then a god is not required. You have the right to believe in a god if you so choose. You also have the right to believe that your rights are derived from some other authority. My rights are inherent and not dependent on someone else to approve them. Unalienable means cannot be taken away. If your rights are granted by an external agent, they can be taken away. By that logic murder shouldn't be illegal, because laws will never stop murders from happening. Stop signs are useless, since people run them anyhow. Essentially you've made a case for no laws at all. Literally too much or too little of anything can kill. That's why we have laws controlling how most everything is used. Tap water? If you have enough, you have to build a fence around it. Bread? Well, you can makke your own bread at home, but if you start mass producing it there are rules controlling what you can put in there. Electricity? Again, you can shock the shit out of yourself in private, but if your use of electricity endangers others, there are laws governing how it can and can't be used. You want a special exemption for guns? They're just allowed to be completely out of control, unlike tap water, bread, and everything else we can name?

Firearms are the great equalizer. My martial arts instructor was going to take on a guy trying to punk him once and more than likely would have did a number on the guy. But when the punk was stood up to he pulled out a gun to get out of the situation he started. Karate instructor was smart enough to back down to a smaller man with a gun.

She really wasn’t. I’m super pro 2nd amendment but she says a lot of things that raise concern. Mentioning drinking and shooting guns as a “fun time” is horrifyingly irresponsible, labeling AR-15s as “assault rifles”, that pistols are more for self defense than any other type of gun, not knowing gun laws, just to name a few.

This professor is why I am proud to be a PSU alum. In my four years there (PSU '78) I never ran into a professor who had his students thinking about issues rather than pushing a liberal agenda. And props to the student. Very difficult to stand in front of a large group and defend your ideas. We need more young Americans like her.

First, the labeling theory (All gun supporters are fat country slobs and uneducated or loner military nerds, that's the stereotypes that need countered.) Two, if it didn't matter at all then the opposite would be true too, that a highly unattractive person wouldn't get noted on their looks. So a man scratching his rear, spitting tobacco, cussing, with infections on his face would be fine. Except, in this experiment he would not be. You'd note it. The third topic I will address is the confirmation bias. Many attractive women are dissuaded by the fact that few of their demographic support any conservative belief, and that's damaging. So yeah, there are 100 legitimate reasons to note her beauty. All these social justice losers like zzzwy777 are just man shamers and pathetic.

The initial design of the American citizen was to be completely independent. To grow your food and use your land to produce the necessities of life. Not to sit on you thumbs and wait for a free handout. Independence means that YOU are the provider of your own safety, the protector of yourself and your family. Not the government and not the police. The purpose of government is clearly outlined in the constitution to provide for the common good and protect the borders AND to protect our individual constitutional rights.

Have completed done a 180 on this issue & the 2nd amendment. Born and raised in Canada, growing up, went shooting with my Dad (he was RCMP) fairly often. In my late 20's, moved overseas and lived in Taiwan, S Korea, Ireland where gun crime was nonexistent. Became scared about living in the States (as my husband is American) and knew we would be settling there for his job. After three years of living here, we both wanted our concealed carry permit so began taking firearms training classes. Still of the opinion that people should need a background check and to have a training course before even purchasing a gun. Realize this means that the gov't may need to subsidize this for people at FPL (federal poverty level). Gov't has paid for crazier things - currently paying for gender affirming "care", and the sterilization, medicalization, and mutilation of minors, so, figure they can pay for a citizens 2nd amendment right. We're seeing countries around the world now (for example, Sweden) that took away their citizens' rights for self-protection. Girls getting raped and beaten in society. In these countries, guns are being smuggled in by gangs and illegal immigrants. Over time, the countries that celebrated their low gun crimes, only the "bad guys" will have the guns.

I wouldn't expect him to give up his rights, but talking to him might ease your fears. If he's actually crazy then your concerns might be valid, but hopefully he's safe and so are you

I've been shooting guns since I was 13 and now I'm 44. Gun training and responsible starts at a young age. Look we teach our kids at a young to learn how to the cross the road or watch for strangers why won't it be any different with guns. It's all about the training just like with this young lady.

Heck, at 16 we turn kids loose with cars which are a lot of responsibility, much more than arms in many ways. It's easier to be safe with a arms with little experience, driving a car is much more complex. And we don't limit the kids to subcompact cars, a kid can drive a 6,000 pound SUV if he and/or his family has the means to purchase one. And at 18 a person can drive a big rig that weighs 80,000 pounds in state and and 21 drive that truck interstate. Think about that, but the idea of arms in the hands of the same person sends people into a fit in so many cases.

@@DMFH2A 60% of our gun deaths are suicides and the vast majority of the rest are gang violence and happen in the ghettos. If you live anywhere decent, gun violence if fairly rare. Also, millions of lives are saved each year with guns. So removing our guns would literally result in millions more than the relatively few deaths today

I am an ardent 2A supporter, NRA member, etc...This conversation is absolutely EXCELLENT. I would have added a few comments such as keeping and bearing arms is my Constitutional right given to me by God and not the government. I would also add that it is an infinitesimally small number of legal firearm possessors who commit crimes with a firearm. A FAR GREATER number of crimes are prevented by legal firearms owners than are committed. Many 2A opponents challenge that statement but with no measurable facts. The most difficult stat to measure is the vast majority of crimes prevented are done without firing a shot or bringing in an intervention mechanism (police, etc...) that gives rise to a measurable stat. A criminal that knows he or she would be confronting an armed citizen is not likely to commit a violent crime against that person. This is virtually unmeasurable. But it doesn't need to be. Why? See above. It is a God given right that cannot be taken away without a Constitutional Amendment. In addition to all of that, which is largely noise as it is all given, the 2A was crafted, not so citizens could go to a range and shoot sheet. But rather to arm themselves against all forms of a tyrannical government. That may be the local water well inspector who comes over with an illegal order to shut down a well. A firearm is a mechanism to hold "law enforcement" at bay while a sheriff can be called in to prevent illegal enforcement of an illegal ordinance by a purported "legal" authority. Government tyranny comes in many forms. The framers lived through this and the 2A is, in part, a mechanism to prevent same. The professor of this class was open to a discussion of the subject, as he should be, and I applaud him for it.

You know your position kind of sort of makes child support extortion. But there is a tad bit of difference you are comparing apples to puppies. There is a second amendment. But seeing as that there was not a mainstream abortions when the Constitution and among the religious population (98% of the populace at the time) it would be very presumable that abortions would not have been looked at kindly in the late 1700s, those people would most certainly considered it murder and very much immoral.

They could most certainly have found a better person to ask questions of. Why do you like having guns? Because as a woman, the (unrealistically overblown) fear of being sexually assaulted leaves me only a firearm or a constant male escort to protect myself, because no amount of self defense classes are going to allow me to fend off a determined man of even my own body mass. Added to the fact that the growing trend of defunding police departments, reducing the offenses for which arrests can be made, and reducing the offenses for which time is served, And reducing the time served for offenses, while adding to the apparently popular new trend of releasing hardened violent criminals from prison for no reason... There is every reason to fear physical attack even when I'm not alone. .. And when they ask about being able to purchase at 18 with a license, just because you haven't done anything wrong yet... remind them that we are innocent unless and until proven to be guilty, and have a Constitutionally protected right to firearms. And that those two things are not the reasons themselves, but exist because of the reason. Which is that every citizen must be assumed to be responsible and trustworthy enough to bear arms if we are then going to select from them the people we place in the highest offices of the land, who we arm as police and our military, and give command to over both. If we assume everyone is corrupt from the beginning, there is no one we can trust with the task of deciding who is safe, unless we forego all of our rights and allow the government to make that choice, specifically - which is called fascism, and always, ALWAYS results in a tyrant overseeing a Disarmed public who no longer have Any rights or freedoms. They have permissions when, and only when and how, the leadership dictates in the moment, and may lose those even retroactively. Thus... the creation of this Free Nation of men and women who are expected to each bear their duties, and hold one another responsible and accountable, and the most vital abilities to do so, are the ability to speak freely, even when you are saying the most unpopular things, and when all else has failed to prevent harms, the 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms... which for the record, the founding fathers included fully automatic weapons in (the puckle gun, available some 80 years Before the Declaration of Independance) and non-personal weapons... including Cannons, which was stated explicitely when one was asked that very question. They intended every weapon the Military (militia) might have access to, to also be avaiable to the citizens to prevent the need of repeating what they had just been through, and to ensure the People remained free of tyrants. (a freedom they believed the People would have to re-win every 10 years).

@@mikebaldI see what you mean, but in reality, there will NEVER not be evil people who seek to do evil things to others. The deterrent is not laws, rather a victim who is not defenseless. Schools in the US are, by and large ‘gun free zones’ which only (just like locks on your door) keep honest people honest. If you are a person who is determined to bring harm to others, you will seek out soft targets that you know are defenseless. Statistically speaking, in the US, CCW permit holders have and do commit far fewer crimes than even police. You don’t ever need to fear the law abiding citizen who carries to protect themselves, their family and others, but you do need to fear the unhinged who wants nothing more than to bring pain and suffering to others. If we are unable to fix the problem with people wanting to hurt others, we should be emboldened to protect ourselves by any means necessary. For when seconds count, the police are minutes away. Never rely on the government to protect you, for they do not have your life nor your best interests at heart.

I live-in an open carry state. I own a gun. Most people i know own guns. When people know you could be packing, they tend to leave you alone. My friend Brandon was driving and keeps his gun on him at all times. He pulled up at a stop sign and some giy and his friend tried to car jack his car. He just pulled his gun and said "Wrong car buddy". They ran. It confuses me how poeple can ask a question with such an obvious answer. Guns help protect you from other people.

I live in a constitutional carry state and we hardly ever have any shootings in the area I live in. Actually I can't even recall a single shooting that has happened around here at least not in the last 15 years since I've been here. And you have 16-year-olds that drive to school with rifles in their truck because it's a hunting area and they learn young how to use their guns.

You know I'm also a proponent of the right to self-defense. If the US ever allowed me into the country (legally), I would be a die hard 1st and 2nd Amendment guy. But I've always had this question; people say they need guns to protect themselves from the Govt, but in this day and age wouldn't you always lose that fight? I guess what I'm really asking is HOW would one protect themselves from the government? What would it entail? I understand forming a militia starting a revolution against a tyrannical state but even then, you'd be outgunned and outmatched because you'd be in the minority while the Govt. has nukes, drones and what have you.

That is what people thought prior to the American Revolution, but we know how that went. Sure they have nuclear weapons but what would they gain from nuking their own people and land? What would a tyranical government gain from killing their people? Nothing, because they need those people. What would the people gain by killing a tyrannical government? Everything, including freedom. You don't need fighter jets, nuclear bombs, or military fatigues to fight against a tyrannical government. Also, remember that the vietcong didn't have the weapons and technology we did, the Taliban and Al Qaeda didn't have tanks or helicopters, and the American revolutionnaries didn't have warships.. Guerilla warfare is very effective even against those technologically superior. Read about various wars through history and you would see what you're saying means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I wish some would use this in debate- She should say to professor "what keeps you from raping me? Strangling me? Doing whatever you wish physically with me? " He would say the laws. criminals are by definition not law abiding. He then would say I don't WISH to harm you. So by default the choose resides inside HIS mind and desires and NOT her as an equal human. The weapon makes all adults equal in regards to power. Relying on laws and/or morality is clear throughout history to be a fool's errand. Im trained, male and fit. I can defend myself against maybe 99.9 percent of the populace, if there is more than one those odds drop massively. I remain armed the choice remains with me greatly what is my destiny. It is that simple. Free vs slave.

I fired a handgun for the first time at the age of 5 with my father behind me assisting me. I received my first rifle for Christmas at the age of 10. My brother and I use to get ammo in our stockings growing up in the state of KS. No big deal at all.
