Hi there, lead writer and designer for the Legion MQ, four companions (Scrapz, Wrench, Hanged Man and Skitters) and majority of the side quests. This video is amazing and I agree 100% with all your points. Here are some extra tid bits: 1. The Runaways and Milita were literally dropped into mod and forgotten about. This was true of pretty much every minor faction before Odin and I went back and added content to them. Salt Town was also mostly forgotten about, the two quests that were added were added very late into development by me just so that there would be something there. There absolutely should've been more there, and it's why none of the main quests touched it. 2. Lapn did have a personal quest and such, but was just... never finished, so all that was cut. 3. There were plans for an independent quest where you work with the Mayor, but thanks to the chaos of development it never got past the concept phase. 4. The bullets from Hardcase are supposed to hurt your health and you could potentially die, I don't know why this was removed. 5. The lead writer of the Crusaders MQ was, indeed, written by a legit author, which probably explains a lot. Also, the reason the nuke the enclave quest was so random was because originally the Crusader MQ didn't touch on the enclave... at all. This is why Wrench leaves if you help the Crusaders, since her whole storyline relies on the space station getting wrecked and when she was written the Crusaders had no equivalent. 6. The turret SQ for the NCR was made by the Lead Writer of the NCRMQ who generally didn't agree with the rest of the writer's thematic ideas concerning the NCR. 7. Because the NCRMQ was written first and considered the MAIN quest for the longest time, all of us had to work with the whole "legendary courier" idea even though we all knew it was freaking stupid. I was also the one who wrote most of the "wow this sure was dumb move by Blackthorn huh" dialogue because... yeah it was super dumb. 8. On the subject of NCRMQ being unfocused... there was literally no plot outline what so ever. Devil made it up as he went along and it really really shoes. Great video man!

IIRC regarding the whole "legendary courier" bit, wasn't something that the Frontier stated early in it's development, namely back around 2016 around the time when this trailer, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9SVobuJnt21go0.html , came out was that the Frontier was intended as a sort of post/late game expansion, ideally intended to be what occurs after the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. Very much like how the New California mod was intended to be a prequel. I certainly recall, not long after the previously mentioned trailer came out, that the site for the project mentioned that it was meant to be after NV's main quest line. And on that, that it was intended that you started with the faction you sided with at Hoover Dam, IE Northern Legion for a Legion victory and Exiles for an NCR victory. If that was the case I'm certain the idea of having you start the Frontier after NV's main quest was dropped fairly quickly due to the technical limitations that is NV's engine, but that change didn't get applied to the story and writing so the notion of you being treated like a legend regardless of being a max level, do-pretty-much-everything character or a fresh, just-left-Doc-Mitchell's character was kept. On a side note, it's interesting to see just how much was already set in stone for the mod far earlier than 2016 with much of the scenes in the trailer. Certainly everything in the NCR's main quest but even things like Unsafe Harbor were very much being worked on years before. And lastly, out of curiosity, just how much was MaybeNextTime associated with the project? Cause they're certainly getting a lot of flak in the newer and edited comments of the linked trailer for calling themselves "disciple of Kojima", and they certainly had to be quite involved to be doing most of the trailers for the mod.

Did you know that you can use Terrifying Presence perk on him in an attempt to obtain Wolfpack armor from him early and it actually FAILS. I think the best way to do hero worship is to have it be based on exaggerated rumors and be somewhat comical. It would be funny if you were walking around the NCR Camp and you heard soldiers say stuff like: “I heard The Courier defeated a massive, evil, genocidal robot named Doctor Mobius.” “Someone told me that when the Courier found a hidden treasure, he carried 34 gold bars on his back for miles.” “They say he killed Mr. House with a golf club. The biggest issue I have had with this mod is the sheer hero worship. It is one of my least favourite elements from games in general. It's an unfortunate inevitable side effect of the mod being made by people who were primarily fans of Bethesda games, which all love to make you Grand General Arch-Badass 3000 Extreme of a faction after you complete five fetch quests for them.
@Marcelelias11
@Marcelelias11 2 жыл бұрын
I partially agree. If you go into the Frontier at the earliest moment possible, then it's really jarring. But if you go when I did, after personally killing Caesar, surviving the Sierra Madre and coming back with all the gold, fighting alongside Joshua Freaking Graham, escaping the Big MT, surviving the Divide, killing the leaders of the Fiends singlehandedly, solving the problems of nearly every faction and earning their respect (or just murdering them, in some cases), solving all of the NCR's problems, killing Mr. House and usurping him, and a lot of other stuff in other sidequests and maybe even other mods, then I feel that people worshipping my character is the bare minimum that they should do.

@@Marcelelias11 I disagree with that mostly with how basegame handles your fame as well. Even at Idolized with the various factions, or having done wacky sidequest shenanigans, the most strong reaction I honestly say I ever got from a quest giver was 'oh hey you're that person that's been helping us. BTW, do you want to help us more, I heard you're super reliable.' They don't go out of their way to lavish praise or cream themselves to get your autograph, and they certainly don't call you by name because all they heard is hearsay about you. The only single man who calls you by Courier 6 in the entire wasteland is Ulyssus, who only learned that name when he went to get the Platinum Chip job and uses it for convenience in the divide so they didn't have to do a Codsworth. So imagine the jarring when five feet off the bus in the Frontier, everyone knows your name, what you're on about and how much of a total badass you really are down south, which by the mod's own admittance in the end, is a 3-day trip by vehicle to what is meant to be some backwater frontier war.
@Marcelelias11
@Marcelelias11 2 жыл бұрын
@@gratuitouslurking8610 I think that's more of a problem with the base game. Well, less of a problem and more of a nitpick, but the difference between Skyrim and New Vegas is that in Skyrim you complete a bunch of random quests with no real weight or meaning and you just get promoted to the leader of a faction or treated as the second coming of Talos, or even both. The only exceptions that come to mind are the Thieve's Guild questline, the Dark Brotherhood questline, and the Dawnguard and Dragonborn DLCs main quests. While in New Vegas, you do many things that individually would give you a reputation of being superhuman (see my list above), and all of them combined should have people treating you like a living god, since your accomplishments would make Lanius look like an angry toddler, and even eclipses Ulysses's achievements and even Joshua Graham's (but Joshua is still on your category due to being that much of a badass). So NOT being treated with reverence makes the people of the Mojave look like ungrateful pricks, especially since after Fallout 1, the NCR actually did sort of deify the Vault Dweller. So I'd argue that the Courier worship in the Frontier CAN make sense, it's just that it wasn't well written in any way.

@@kvant13 Somehow, somewhere, NV fans will clench at any and all straws to link something back to Bethesda. The Frontier was a massive project, you can't even begin to generalize their work by pretending they were all imitating something they were supposedly fans of. It's also ironic given that prior to the release of the mod, there were circlejerks galore about how "Frontier is writing an ACTUAL Fallout game, not like stinky Todd Howard." Just accept it as what it is, mediocre fanfiction. Doesn't get much more complicated beyond that.

I don't know, the aesthetics seemed fine to me. Literally in the original Fallouts you had Modern weapons in it like the British SA80, the G11, and the MP5, which aren't really weapons that were made in the 50s-60s. Don't forget that NV's Marksman Carbine is an AR15 and the Assault Carbine is a Colt XM4 without any attachments or rails. Plus Enclave technology is designed to be hyperfuturistic as they are technically the apex predators of technology in the Fallout world, and neon lights do exist in Fallout, check out Enclave bunkers if you wanna know what I mean. And the Skyrim armor that the Legion wears? Well technically they are museum replicas with a little cold protection. And space stations do exist in FO, Van Buren (the OG FO3 and could've been the better FO3 if it never got cancelled) literally had you go to a space station.

One thing that irks me about the Frontier's writing consistently, and that Mike dips into a few times here, is how shit of a job the writers do at portraying the Scavs. Not that they should be more sympathetic, but they should be LESS sympathetic. They use very modern, pre-apocalypse definition of "civilian" as anyone who isn't in a military uniform and part of an organized military unit. In a post-apocalyptic setting, however? If you pick up a gun and start shooting at people, you are no longer a civilian. You are a combatant. They needed to write some NCR character who put their foot down and made it clear that people are not absolved of personal responsibility when they begin SHOOTING AT PEOPLE just because they don't have a uniform. It doesn't fit the Fallout universe, I'm sorry, by the Frontier's logic the Jackals and Vipers and Great Khans are all "civilians", too. It's really absurd and grating.

I think the civilian/combatant distinction *could* work, if they had made an effort to show the scavs working more like a criminal gang and less like a bunch of insurgents. They could make a quest line about the scavs trafficking chems into the NCR, extorting farmers, or kidnapping people and holding them for ransom, and then have a character point out that it's really not the army's job (or your mission) to enforce any kind of laws in the frontier or that the scavs should be getting a trial instead of being treated like a military target (there were police in the NCR in fallout 2, and a prison in New Vegas so presumably there'd be some kind of criminal justice system.)

A friend and I were playing through The Frontier and one thing irked me that I haven't seen many people comment on; The amount of fucking EQUIPMENT the NCR Exiles has. They have Vertibirds up the wazoo flying everywhere- some of them built for vehicle transport- tons and tons of soldiers and weaponry and ammo and armor, and all of it from one military base they found? I'd expect a place like that to be practically cleaned out by the time they got to it. Dunno if maybe I missed something but it just seems strange they have that amount of resources, meanwhile the ACTUAL NCR has places like Camp McCarren barely fortified
@YourCorvus
@YourCorvus 2 жыл бұрын
In fairness I think its implied back in the NCR deep core they do have working vehicles again and some modicum of armored support in addition to a larger airforce. The Rangers are also a massive force apparently - large enough to tame Baja California on their own with minimal support. The whole thing with the Mojave is that it is the absolute frontier of the NCR and has some of the worst conditions regarding logistics in NCR history on top of an ongoing insurgency against the Legion. The Rangers are taking losses because Hanlan is screwing them over. The NCR Heavy Trooper (Corps?) is also in a feud and the whole thing with the actual, literal war crimes the NCR committed is still kinda hampering their efforts. But in a setting and context such as the NCR exiles who are just that - exiles and volunteers at the edge of the NCR's northern frontier in an environment and climate they have little to no experience in seems like they should be even worse off than the Mojave garrison - but somehow they have dozens of times more equipment. This group of ***exiles*** has functional tanks hundreds of miles from the nearest major NCR base in a city barely better off than DC. It makes so little sense but I guess its cool? I don't know knowing what we do now the whole plot and writing was a complete mess from the start.

That way the "*FEEL BAD*" segments later on feel a bit more impactful, cause when it's literally basically an entire army that lost their life on an order someone else gave i see no reason to feel bad for that, that wasn't on me. Sometime after that he was caught by enemy Scavs and hanged, but by some miracle - he survived but his esophagus was destroyed so he couldn't speak anymore. I think The Frontier is a fine example of just how tricky game development can actually be. A lot of times when people hear that some game or another has things like cut content, or that things were different before release, they salivate over the possibility of "hours of content" waiting to be restored. Or more cynically come to the conclusion that something was removed so it could be repackaged and sold as DLC. But the reality is, things get cut out of a final game because while an idea may have been good on paper, it just didn't mange to work out for any number of reasons. The Frontier has so many things in it that are incredible from a technical standpoint, but also clearly represent a labor of love from the individuals who worked on them. And a problem with getting too attached to something you've spent years working on is that you can be reluctant to remove it, even if the end product would be better and more cohesive without it. It can be hard, especially for people essentially doing this for free as a hobby, to give up something they put so much effort into. But the final product of the Frontier clearly shows what it is, a bunch of individual pieces noone wanted to get rid of, that they then had to stitch together as best they could. When you couple that with the admittedly poor writing overall, bits cribbed from other games, and a bunch of teenage edgelord content for the sake of being edgy, it does detract from the things that they *could* have focused on and ended up with a smaller but overall better offering.

Your closing thoughts are about the same as mine, though I never touched it. It's sad that so much talent was brought together and effort put forth to make something quality only for it to miss its mark and get lambasted. Watching them go into damage control afterward and throw the guy that did the pipboy icons under the bus like the misting of his blood in the air would prove an adequate smoke screen for criticism while they tried to patch things up didn't engender me to their cause either, but that's probably just me there. If nothing else, assuming -- I think safely -- that Bethesda will continue to use the same engine to make their games, the technical things they've accomplished with it have set a high bar of quality that any reasonable person should expect the big corporation with a bunch of money and staff to at least meet. If Bethesda, themselves or through another developer, never dip the Fallout IP's toes into actual RPGs again -- Heaven forbid it, I would love to get another game in the spirit of New Vegas -- then they might at least improve the game in other ways that may be entertaining despite that.

For me the mod is a bit scuffed from the go, the ncr is on critical manpower to the point where losing a hundred soldiers is devastating and losing a couple of men in a substation is enough to have it off limits for years. The idea that the ncr would simply allow hundreds (but according to the mod a little over of under a thousand) go without a single repercussion is bizarre and nonsensical. The fact that a group of brotherhood from the powerplant battle, while wounded and with next to no supplies would "fall back" to salt lake utah makes no sense, it is there so they have a back story but no reason for it occurring in the first place. Lastly is the sheer amount of resources that the ncr and legion are able to scavenge in portland. Regardless of the logistical head scratch of making portland rife with unspoilt tech, vehicles, weapons, and salvage while also insisting it has been lived in since the bombs fell. There's just so many world breaking lore drops that make little to no sense. That's just from the beginning as well. Neon lights on space stations come to mind later in the game lol.

To say the few genuinely nice things I have to say about The Frontier: - It's a technological marvel for the engine. The vehicle systems, the boss fights, the creative uses of base game assets, the enemy design, all genuinely amazing for the limitations of the Gamebryo engine. - A world that takes the best of Fallout 4's world design. That's the idea that there's always something. Pick a direction, walk in it, and you should find something interesting eventually. - The sheer amount of content is *massive*. Speaks for itself. To say the major negative things I have to say about The Frontier: - The writing. Read it. It's usually not great. The Crusaders feel like a weird fanfiction, the entire NCR Exiles story line is just bad, the Northern Legion just feels like someone on the team was WAY too into the fascistic hegemonic empire, and that's just the main story lines. - The lack of direction made me lose a lot of interest in anything the mod had to say. You mentioned Salt Town feeling out of place and isolated from the rest of the world, but there are unfortunately a lot of these kinds of things, where you can see things where someone clearly started work on something, but got bored or left the team or just forgot about it, and you can see the vague bones of... something, but nothing concrete. And that's not to say anything about how thematically inconsistent the mod is with itself. Contrast that with the main game, and it's repeating themes of repeating and not letting go of the past, to the point where literally every single DLC has The Past as a central theme, and the main plot of the main game is about how, ultimately two empires that represent the United States and the Roman Empire, inherently cannot move on from the past and are doomed to repeat it. The NCR plot entirely changes main theme and direction like 3 times. - A world that takes the worst of Fallout 4's world design as a core design pillar. A lot of the stuff is just so empty. You SHOULD be able to find something interesting in any direction, but you can't in many ways. - You simultaneously have too much and too little impact on the world. There are places where you should thematically be able to have some effect on the world, and then places where something just can't be changed logically without breaking the player's immersion. The mod crosses both of these lines frequently, setting up areas where it feels like you should be able to change something but not following through, and also setting up impossible-to-solve conflicts that you can just... fix with few issues. A bunch of runaway slaves wouldn't trust a random coming into find one of their own, and turning in evidence of corruption is going to have some knock-on effects in a small town. - I'm gonna be hones, this one is kind of petty, but they really needed a voice director. I understand the voice actors varying in audio quality, and even skill. But the complete lack of consistency in tone and direction is inexcusable.

Actual Content of the Mod: great technical chops, bad writing, REALLY bad set-pieces, and occasional bits of narrative genius. EXAMPLE: "I don't want to keep throwing men and resources at the Legion to no effect" *proceeds to leave for Oregon with enough manpower and resources to absolutely overrun Caesar's Fort with an aerial assault in five minutes tops* *proceeds to run into enough Legion troops to absolutely stifle his own massive force despite this being a splinter group which has only recently been recruiting from local tribes*

I found when it came to vehicles that the personal tank you can get is much better than any other vehicles in The Frontier, it's easier to steer, is much more durable than a buggy or whatever, many obstacles aren't actually a problem with it... and it has two weapons ye can use along with it being something ye can use to carry all yer stuff. So overall the personal tank was way better than using many of the other vehicles in the game. Didn't even need fuel for it either. Uuuunless you count flamer fuel for the flamethrower of the tank.

I have to admit, I was a bit leery at the 2 hour review, but it's well worth the time, and I think were quite fair about it. Also I've said it before, but you and Zach deserve medals for forcing your way through the NCR campaign so the rest of us didn't have to. I could only make it to the start of the Dead Space sequence on the space station before I had enough and restarted the mod with a Crusader play through. And found the mod became so much better and more like a Fallout game once you get off the NCR railroad. There are a few things I would add to your review which I otherwise agree with. The first being the team's insistence that the game was going to be totally lore friendly and accurate, when in the end it wasn't. A lot fits in and is totally lore friendly... But then they throw out stuff like a race of intelligent robots far more advanced than anything in Fallout tech. Nanosuit cyborg soldiers that seem more at home in Crysis. Hundreds or thousands of working gas powered vehicles, and the gas to run them, when one of the core points of Fallout lore is there was almost no gas left and everyone was using nuclear powered vehicles. And finally a moderately sized flying brick of a Heli carrier thing that surely would have ended the Chinese-American war on it's own. I could still forgive most of this stuff in a mod, I've seen sillier and more non-lore friendly stuff. But you don't get to make the claim of 'lore friendly' then throw it out the window. It is also weirdly out of place when you take some of that gear and such and interact with the parts of the mod that are lore friendly. My final gripe is how a lot of the writing for the NCR quest line didn't make a lick of sense. It started off with such potential, then went off the rails so quickly. From Blackthorne talking in the opening flashback about not leaving people behind, then five minutes later telling you to execute your wounded comrades. To him leaving the NCR to avoid a pointless war with the Legion, to immediately getting in a pointless war with the Northern Legion. And as pointed out, how he calls Kimball a terrible warmonger only to do worse than what he does, and planned to use the Exile Helicarrier to stage a coup against the NCR... Make up your mind if you want to fight for the NCR or not.... It would have been so much better and made more sense if Blackthorne had remained a part of the NCR and been sent north with his troops to stop the Northern Legion. And dump the entire Liberator and the attempted coup storyline entirely. But my biggest complaint about the NCR storyline was how much it stripped agency from the player, and how often it forced you to play as different characters, or through preset sequences. That is against everything Fallout games are about. Even Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta for all they were rightly accused of being very linear DLC weren't as restrictive as the NCR questline. I am glad that the team is sticking with it and redesigning that part. Because otherwise so much of the mod is fantastic, and the love and care the team put into it shows. I looked forward to the mod back when it was in development, and I enjoyed most of my time with the mod. It still remains as part of my NV load order, and I'll play it again. I look forward to the changes they will make in the future, to make the mod even better. I may complain about some things, but it's from a position of love for this mod.
@gratuitouslurking8610

Having been going through FO3 via TTW, it's actually kinda terrifying just how much Anchorage reminds me of the Frontier. An entire DLC focused on action setpieces and pre-set scripting (not helped that at least once it broke on me and wouldn't go to the final part) all to give either some nod or jab at the emerging era of modern military shooters. The diff is, even Anchorage on it's highest difficulties or modded to be more lethal isn't nearly as much as a slog and the story around the simulation at least gives a token try to be interesting. The NCR questline winds up being both too bland and long and also too much into it's own hype, not helped by the fact that it's sheer presence was the bedrock everyone else had to work around when they tried to make more interesting and closer to basegame things.

You would've assumed that the NCR campaign should've been the one that was the most well crafted, considering that the mod kicks off with you with the NCR, and most players tend to like the NCR (over the Legion or the Crusaders), but I guess the thing was designed to show the amount of technical skill that they had.

Took me a while to find time to watch this whole in-depth review. Your points are strong, and come through much better than they did while (despite as much fun as it was at the time) seeing Zach having a mental breakdown in the foreground. In some ways, I feel bad for the devs who put all this time and talent into something so noteworthy and impressive, only to have it torn apart by the community for its glaring flaws. In o thers, though, it definitely deserves those criticisms and more, because any amount of this could have been solved with better communication between teams, or a broader net of more traditionally experienced Fallout players to call out the obvious rips from other games, to complain about the pitch black mazes, and call out the conceits that hurt the overall product. There were many darlings here that needed to be killed. Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful review, Mike. My biggest complaint about the Frontier is that it's basically set in Portland in name only. I was born in PDX and lived nearby for most of my life. Portland has an incredibly unique atmosphere that isn't shown at all in the game. It seems like every building is a blown-out shithole, and sure, it IS the aftermath of nuclear war, but so is every other setting in the Fallout universe. In Fallout 3, you traverse the landscape and actually feel like you're in Washington DC. In FNV, you can walk through the seemingly untouched Vegas Strip and feel its atmosphere. You don't feel that same way in the Frontier. It seems like every building was shelled out almost as a cop out, so the developers wouldn't have to build a realistic Portland. And it depresses me because I was excited to see my hometown reimagined in the Fallout universe

I never paid The Frontier much attention after it came out due to the controversy surrounding it, but it's nice to know there was at least some enjoyment to be had with the mod, and nicer still to know the devs are making attempts to salvage the project and smooth out the rougher parts of the mod. Still though, in terms of content and scope this mod is absolutely MASSIVE and I have to give props to the artists, animators, scripters, and writers for putting together a mod of this scope and scale. I hope a lot of the other big name Fallout modding projects achieve this level of dedication from their creators in the future, and it'll be nice to see New Vegas levels of storytelling and role-playing from games using the Fallout 4 engine in the future. Thanks for this comprehensive review Mike, I hope you get the chance to do more content like this in the future! 💖
