Too bad y’all didn’t mention how the knarly ass Owen gun was designed. So here y’all go if your interested. Basically there was this kid living in Australia (Owen) and he loved designing guns. So he was 12 and he was like “I’m gonna build a machine gun!”; builds the first Owen Gun and just shoots it and messes around and makes it pretty badass. A few years go by and guess what WW2 starts, he joins the Australian Army and gets shipped off to Africa, leaving his cool machine gun in his garage. Now Australia was having a very large shortage of EVERYTHING in the first years of the war, including rifles, tanks, uniforms, and especially SMGs. They were using only Thompsons and they were going broke buying those so they needed a new home grown design. Basically Owen’s mom is going through her garage and finds a fucking machine gun. She’s like “Hmm maybe I should tell someone” so she calls the Army and they show up and see it and go “Damn, badass”. They put it through trial and boom, new machine gun, cooked up by a 12 year old in his garage. Ends up being the Aussie Army standard SMG until like the 1980s.

I don’t know shit about guns, and I never really found the topic interesting until this guy started explaining them. These two are super entertaining in general, though- I feel like their dynamic could make any topic at least mildly amusing.

Watching these videos it's very apparent that Zach is a well qualified and knowledgeable armorer. However, it's also apparent he's not very good at explaining that knowledge to someone else who just isn't anywhere near his level.

It's a 56 caliber, 7 shot, repeating rifle used by both the Cavalry and Army in a time when single shot muzzle loaded rifles we're used. Fun fact the 56 and 56-50 Spencer rounds were cased ammo. No need for sperate mercury caps.

PK or in Russian, "Pulyemot Kalashnikova" just means "Kalashnikov's Machinegun". "M" just means "Kalashnikov's Machine Gun, Modernized". So the difference between a normal PK and PKM isn't too huge just that the PKM is slightly lighter by 3-6 pounds due to the changes of furniture from wood to bakelite (fibreglass) like the stock, carry handle and the handguard. The Mauser Broomhandle, also called the C96. It was actually pretty popular with the Chinese and it was used deep into WWII. The Chinese actually made two different variants of it as it was made by the official government artillery facilities and also by various warlords during the Warlord Era of early 20th Chinese history soon after the Xinhai Rebellion (Tons of C96 was also used by the Tongmenhui rebels in toppling of the Qing government with said gun). So the Chinese had two important variants or unlicensed copy of the Mauser C96 and that's the normal C96 that was made in government facilities and also the Shanxi Type 17 made by a Shanxi warlord called Yan Hsi-shan and that particular "C96" is chambered in .45 ACP as his men were armed with M1828s also made in Shanxi. The Chinese were particularly fond of using the M712 Schnellfeuer too as they din't have tons of submachine guns (neither do the Japanese but aaaanyway) and even if they did, the NRA lost almost all their German supplied equipment in Shanghai and Nanking thus the normal C96 became the mainstay pistol while the coveted M712 became a piece that everyone wanted. Ah ah... Slight error there. So, there IS a charging handle for the M3 but it depends on which model you're talking about. The original M3 has a charging handle on it but to ease production even further, it got removed by 1944 together with some upgrades to be made into the M3A1 "Grease Gun". Both still served well deep into the Vietnam conflict tho. No, the STEN would be phased out by the Sterling when the Uzi rolled around as the STEN, despite its advantages, were total crap in reliability but if you need a weapon in a pinch, hey, good job. The Uzi was in fact used by certain US branches at one point and the most infamous one would be the US Secret Service. The reason why the gun was picked was because it was shorter than conventional SMG on the market as it has a folding stock and a telescopic bolt which makes it even more compact. This allows the Secret Service operator to use it with one hand and even out of vehicles while allowing them to tuck the gun right in their vest holster in their suits. Remember the scene where Ronald Reagan was shot and a Secret Service operator pulled out a big ass pistol looking gun from his suit, dropped something from the back of that "weird' gun while hollering orders at people while cradling the gun in one hand and the other checking on Reagan who's on the floor? Yea. That's the Uzi. Also, no. In WWII, the MP38/40 isn't the SMG that the German "technically" had. In fact, the Waffen SS, the terror and paramilitary organization of the Nazi regime used more than the MP38/40. They in fact had regiments armed with MP-28 that was fighting as late as 1945 in Berlin against the Russians.

About the Owen msg, the sight was off set to the left so it would be better suited for a left handed but there was no other version of sights that were in the right that I know of, they also were made by a teen before he went to war by putting a bunch of stuff together, then two gun makers found it in a bag leaned against the garage and asked who made it then turned it into the Owen msg we know today.
