Loading definitely will get easier. You just gotta' trust the diagram on the baseplate. No need to wind with backdoor open imo. If I have suspicions if the film caught on or not, I'll usually load it, close back door and insert baseplate, advance a couple frames, then lift the rewind knob, rewind a bit to feel some tension and "confirm" that the film is properly on the reel mechanism. Can usually get 38ish frames 💪

I have to say it’s kind of cute watching you “kids” (I say that as a huge fan of your channel, Mike 🌟) put film in cameras without exposing it and then removing it. Think of what it was like in the 60s through the 90s waiting for two weeks and finding out only a few photos turned out well. Our heyday was when prints could be developed in a… day. lol. Roman’s words of wisdom… “There’s only 36 shots in a roll of film; make them count.” I couldn’t go back to using film, but it’s great watching you guys see the joy in it. At some point try B/W. Would love to see what you create.

If considering a film M might I recommend an M7. Aperture priority mode would suit your style of shooting I imagine. I can switch seamlessly between it and my M10 they are so similar in feel.

What I found loading film into my M6 is half cock the shutter wind and this holds the film on the sprockets. I know the system is fast loading, but it can from time to time, not hold.

Try over exposing Portra 400 a bit more. 2 stops over is the sweet spot I find, but you can push it further. If you shoot underexpose at all or try to bring back detail in the black, they can go a bit green, washed out and grainy.

🙌 Great video Mike, I love all the photographer cameos in your videos, you’re all having fun, which is the whole point. MP for the more subtle branding IMO, but take a look at the M6 TTL - the shutter speed dial is bigger, so easier to turn without looking and I found one with 0.58 viewfinder, which is great for 28mm/35mm. And please be careful with that bottom plate!! Enjoy! 😎

I love my MPI must say that exposure is very different to the M11 that you would adjust for the highlights. I’m finding that I’m over exposed by 1/2 to 1 stop on Portra400 but that could be just me 🙈

When all you had was film, when I was your age, you used ASA 125-200 film on sunny day shooting and a film like Portrait 400 to shoot on cloudy days. It gives a nice color saturation in diffused light, like you get for overcast days. Yes, Portra film was originally developed for shooting Portraits (in ad out of a studio) it get nice skin tones, but can be used for general shooting, like street shooting, where you have a variety of subjects. Cheers

I’m curious mate (as someone who has just stitched to film over the last few months for a bit), with your digital street photography, how to you curate what you keep and what you don’t? Film has taught me to slow down and only take the shot I want, but I really struggle with digital and knowing when to stop other than “I think I’ve covered this now”. How do you choose? Or do you even have a bunch of photos at the end of the day? My biggest hurdle is 5 of the same with very small differences and not knowing which to keep.

M6 has the fast rewind crank, but the MP / M-A takes awhile to rewind - although there are some hacks. Otherwise, pretty similar shooting experience. But to shoot with both eyes open on a 1:1 viewfinder, try the M3. That M3 viewfinder is why some say the M3 is the greatest Leica & that was HCB's bias, but not Winogrand's. I'd give anything two hear those two have a friendly debate. Great video. Thank you.

Mike, great video. I am interested in picking up a Leica M11. Is there an alternative 35mm lens that you'd recommend aside from Leica brand? I am an amateur photographer with a limited budget, so I will not be able to have a full Leica set up. Best regards,

When people talk about the Leica look (on digital) and I see nothing but the same look as in Fuji/Sony/Nikon/Canon… (or even worst, what we have seen in your channel when we compare with the X100) I feel bad/sorry about people expending lot of money for nothing (except for Leica management getting richer). But if Leica makes sense, is on film… so you did it right, imo.

Could anyone explain at 0:49 why set the iso to 1600 in daylight? Is that intentional just because he set the low aperture and super high shutter speed for narrow depths of field and less likely to get blurry shots? Or because m11 has dual iso one of which starts from 1600?
@MikeChudley
@MikeChudley 15 күн бұрын
I’m on auto iso shooting at f5.6 or f8 and it’s cloudy so that’s why it’s 1600

Yes he still has it and we used it a couple of times last year and it takes lovely photos, did you want to borrow it. - Nah I’m good and I’m happy you’re using it, just be aware that it’s now worth over £200, in case someone walks up to you and offers to ‘take it off yer hands’ for £100!!

Thanks for another nice video Mike. I feel that you are at a photography level where you don't mind me saying this. And this is just my opinion so take it for what's it worth. But I feel you are editing your photos a little too much, where the reds are coming out orange. As if you were shooting with a Sony digital camera a few years back. But you are "the chef" of your own images, and if you want that look, so be it. I just feel you are taking away a little of why a Leica lens has "the Leica look".
