We're pouring and finishing a 28' x 28' x 4" concrete floor for this 2-car garage. I'm going to share with you what it costs to install this concrete floor and how I charge for prep, concrete, and labor/profit.
I have a basic square foot charge for each thing I do based on all the projects I've done in the past and the experience I have owning a business for 40 years.
Some estimates and bids I do like this one are fairly easy because they only involve a few things. It's easy to bid floors like this over the phone. A lot of people/contractors I give estimates to like to know what it costs to hire me so this is my way of letting them know immediately.

I don’t live anywhere near Maine, but I do want to thank you for actually providing your estimated price per square foot. So many of these people that put out videos don’t tell you a price and then you ask about a price and then they say well, it depends on where you live, and it depends on different codes, supply costs, permits, etc. etc. etc. Believe me 99.9% of viewers watching videos know the price will vary depending on location but 99.9% of viewers just want an idea on the price. Again thank you for actually providing your average price.

Remember this is just flat work Its the work actual concrete contractors don't want. Its time waster and customer intensive callback prone type of retail work that a guy like this can make a very good living doing but you are always putting our fires with work that is VISIBLE for its entire useful life. Foundation and structural concrete is hidden most of the time. Call backs are rare. You deal with mainly peer professionals

Always enjoys your jobs. On this one, with the fall of inch and half from outside to centre, it seemed as though it was floated without account of the required diagonals from each outside corner to the middle. So how did you account for that?

How come you didn’t use a vibra- screed on this pour?.. is it because it’s easier to slope to drain with hand screed board? What percentage slope would you recommend for driveway pour?

Very nice...being winter at this time, I'd be interested in knowing you're guys regime for cracked hands, fingers -- lotion, balms you use. Some of these vids are 20 deg F. Always appreciate you putting up Mike.

Superglue the cracks shut. Moisturize to prevent them if you can, but superglue, especially the gel type, helps with the pain and healing.

I always had the customer pay for all materials and I would just charge for labor ! Seem to work out pretty well for us . Unless I got the odd customer who didnt want to pay for materials which was a red flag for me to maybe avoid this job!

Mike, have never used superplastiser/ water reducer. Does it start to revert back to a three inch slump quickly? Or does it kind of set up the same way as if you were to pour it at a 6 made that way by water? Thanks

Super P. The simple answer to your question is it reverts back quickly. The long answer to your question is: if a concrete truck leave the plant on 3 and a lot of water was held because the customer wanted it tight, then drives 55 minutes on a decently warm day. When that concrete arrives it is ~ an hour and ten minutes old. It will be on a sub 1 inch slump and you’d catch hell even getting it out of the truck. When you add super P it makes the concrete “loose” and workable but it doesn’t have the same effect on the hydration of the cementitious material due to large size of the plasticizer molecules. So it will go from being workable to “get a machine on NOW” or it has gotten away from you.

Also I forgot to mention. All concrete that I know of nowadays all has water reducer in it and I run a concrete plant. There are many different types of WR’s some plants use only a medium Range in their mixes, my company uses a Medium/high Range WR plastol 6420 every single one of our mixes and we use about ~ 50 standard mix designs have plastol in them. It is Dosed Oz per hundred weight when designing a mix and Oz per yard when batching or requesting more of it.

What do you pay a guy to come help pour for a few hours and then he goes on his way? You obviously have to pay him enough to make it worth his while. Id like to find an area of the states where you could find piece work like that a few days a week and make decent money without being full-time. Maybe someone else could chime in about different areas. Thanks

What is "sar it" mean in relation to concrete? That's new to me. Is that just in Canada eh? We don't "sar" concrete down here in America (i live in North Carolina). Is that a cold weather process?

When you have to do the labor yourself in your company, you don't have a profitable business. What you have is a self-employment situation where you're paying yourself for your labor. You get to the point where you're a supervisor, one or more jobs at a time and you don't have to do the manual labor. You then have a profitable successful company that you can either pass on or even sell, but unless you can sell yourself with the person who buys your business, you're not selling a viable business. You just have a self-employment situation even if you are listed as a corporation. You've just created yourself a job. My 28x28 shop cost $12 a square foot for the concrete work, but that also included 2-ft perimeter cinder blocks the owner of the company showed up at the beginning of the poor. Came back around the time for power trial to check in on. It came back at the end of the day to double check everything was done right. He never once got dirty. From what I can tell he runs six trucks and trailers and is pouring between 4 and 6 jobs a day year round. But we live down here in America
