The 2018 - 2019 Mustang GT clutch pedal feel has often been discussed, but never fully explained. Curious to improve the feel of my clutch and clutch pedal, I purchased the Steeda #555-7022 S550 replacement clutch assist spring. The results were surprising!

In an effort to provide content on this channel that is objective and unique, this video focuses on using scientific methods to generate relevant data that can translate to real-world user-friendly information.
Thanks in advance to @itsjusta6, @cj pony parts and @woman.driven for their prior content on the subject, which was instrumental in my decision to make this mod. I hope that this fresh approach to investigating the Mustang’s clutch pedal response answers questions, stimulates conversations and encourages more people to make their cars ‘their own’.

TLDR: (no spring or steeda spring is more linear and thus better for driving) Couple thoughts just to clear things up and help someone decide on this. It is an assist spring. Key word ASSIST. Lighter spring/no spring=less assist=stiffer more linear pedal feel. The point of it is to make the peddle feel lighter and assist with the movement of the pedal. Now the problem with this is it is not LINEAR at all. The stock spring you will notice forces your foot off at the very top of the peddle where the clutch engages!! Making it very hard to control and cause dumping the clutch/bucking. The steeda spring is lighter and does less ASSISTING and in turn makes the pedal more linear. No spring= even more so! I just removed the stock spring completely and gave it a drive and it's much easier to drive because the assist spring is no longer springing your foot off the clutch pedal, at the top of the pedal travel, right before it fully engages. Its the same stiffness throughout. This is the best way for me to describe this for people to understand. The science is cool and all but he doesn't realize it's an assist spring hence why he's confused the other spring and no spring made it slightly stiffer and more linear. Ford did the assist spring in an attempt to make the divability better by making the pedal lighter. Not realizing they actually made it harder to control the pedal. Mines off currently and I can assure you the linear feel is much more desirable and the pedal is still very easy to push in. The tiny bit of extra pedal effort is wayyy worth the linear feel you get IMO. Now if you want a tiny assist and still most of the linear feel, get the steeda spring. I'm going to try it out myself but I love the no spring feel right now. The pedal makes so much more sense. Anyways cool video I like seeing the differences in pressure you just didn't know it was an assist spring which is fine. Iv been reading forums and researching it for awhile then finally tried it myself then it all made since lol. Side note: the spring can be removed without vice grips. Push the pedal all the way in with the left hand then pull on it with the right until the bottom part slides off. It will spring off pretty hard so turn away before its about to shoot of. It's greased so it slides fairly easily. It should shoot into the floor board and will have 3 pieces total. And is totally reversable as long as the plastic doesn't break. 2018 gt pp1

@AceSpade - 100% on point. It's important for people to realize it is an 'assist' spring, like you said. I've been happy with the Steeda replacement and will probably leave it in place. Mustangs are all about mods and choices, so its great that you share your experiences. Thanks!

Simple - I have had 17 spine surgeries. This video showed some difficulties which it took me 6hrs some acrobatics, lots of pain but I got it done!! I was worried that I was not going to be able to depress the clutch. Interesting was the science.showed why I like the new clutch feel along with the new trans mount shifter that took me 3 days to reach and torque the bolts. Been 3 months and changing to stainless headers,exhaust and complete Steeda bearing changes I have what is like a new car after 6+ months to get the work completed, remember I have severe spine downgrade and everything takes me longer but I am extremely happy today.

Great video! So Ford thinks the average Mustang driver needs help pressing the clutch pedal. For lots of city driving maybe so. The real Mustang enthusiasts want that traditional muscle car clutch feel and the Steeda spring does just that adding an ever so slight more linear help depressing. I like your scientific approach. Its all clear now. Thanks!
@MikeFyxdt
@MikeFyxdt 5 жыл бұрын
TNitro N - thanks so much for checking in! I think you are absolutely correct: Ford specifically designed the action of the clutch pedal/return spring to suit the needs of the average driver. Steeda recognized and answered the need to provide another alternative to fill in the gap, for people that want a heavier feel. Some people have been quick to imply that something is 'wrong' with the stock design, and hopefully this video - and comments like yours - will underscore that the stock clutch spring is perfectly good. But for someone that wants a low cost, reversible mod that actually changes how the car drives, you can't beat the spring replacement.

I think the most important thing about the science that was left out is at what point in the curve does the clutch engage! I think the stock spring interacts at an awkward point of the curve when the pressure has the most swing at the same time the clutch engagement/disengagement happens. Whereas the aftermarket spring has a smoother interaction at that point in the curve. JMO

Joe, those are good points. I feel like the clutch engagement is distributed pretty evenly across the middle of the pedal travel. And that supports what you are saying, that the replacement spring feels smoother. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

@@MikeFyxdt I took a screen shot of your chart while watching the video (well done) and I’m will to bet that the engagement is about 2 to 3 inches which is at a flatter spot with the aftermarket making for a smoother transition. Your graphs show the entire problem. You push in the clutch, you change gear, then you want to release the clutch to the engagement point quickly and then slowly after you hit the engagement point. With the stock spring, as you're lifting, the pressure needed to hold the peddle has a 50% difference along its travel from easiest to hardest... and the Steeda Spring only has an 18% difference. It's much flatter, and that consistency is what makes it feel smoother.

I have a new Bronco on order. Actually I have had one on order for 16 months now. I'm pretty sure the Bronco is set up the same way, since most of the manual parts are "borrowed" from the mustang. Assuming I am right about it being the same, and assuming Ford ever builds it, first thing I'll do is swap the spring. I hate soft squishy clutches.
@MikeFyxdt
@MikeFyxdt 2 жыл бұрын
I did not know that Bronco is borrowing from Mustang but it makes sense. To be clear, the clutch feel with the factory spring in the Mustang is anything but soft and squishy. The resistance is good, but there is a weird dead spot in the middle. This new assist spring gives a more consistent feel throughout the travel of the pedal. I hope that helps… Thanks for watching and joining the conversation!

@upurnose46
@upurnose46 5 жыл бұрын
The only reason anyone should remove the factory assist spring or replace it with a steeda is when they are racing. Theres several accounts of people having their clutch pedal not return to the up position fast enough when doing high rpm shifts causing them to miss a gear, not to be confused with the high torque lockout, that is a separate problem. Removing the spring and replacing the clutch with one that has more clamping force usually fixes the problem.

From what I read that's not the only reason (I have it installed, just didn't go out test yet). The problem with the spring is on the return it starts pushing back right on bite point which requires you to be way more careful when shifting normally if you want smooth shifts. Sure, one gets used to it like I did, but having more control is useful specially when the car is still cold and I want my wife to learn how to drive manual and if what I read is true, it'll make the process a lot easier.

I don't get it. How can a hard return spring make the pedal EASIER to press down? Why is the pedal harder to depress without a spring or with a lighter spring in place? When you push the pedal down you're also extending the spring. So I would expect you to need a lot more force with such a hard spring in place. What am I missing?
@MikeFyxdt
@MikeFyxdt 4 жыл бұрын
Vlad Soare - Your question is exactly what I was wondering before installing the spring. The missing information is that the CLUTCH acts like a spring. The clutch pedal assist spring pushes against the clutch resistance, making depressing the pedal easier. With no assist spring it’s all clutch resistance; with the stock helper spring the pedal is lighter, but the resistance changes at different pedal positions; with the Steeda spring (weaker assist) the pedal is harder and smoother, but easier than no assist spring at all. Does that help? :)

@B16WGZ 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikeFyxdt Thank you for your quick reply. I understand what you're saying, but I still have a hard time visualizing it. I mean, with no spring it's all clutch resistance, while with the OEM spring it's clutch resistance PLUS spring resistance (because it's YOU who extend it, it doesn't extend itself). I must be missing something. Maybe something to do with the angle of the pedal, or its circular rather than linear trajectory, or something like that?
@MikeFyxdt
@MikeFyxdt 4 жыл бұрын
@@B16WGZ - No, replace "PLUS" with "MINUS" in your example, since the assist spring pushes in the opposite direction as the clutch: "...with no spring it's all clutch resistance, while with the OEM spring it's clutch resistance MINUS spring resistance..."
@B16WGZ
@B16WGZ 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikeFyxdt Oh, I think I get it. My assumption was that the spring sits there in its relaxed, stable state, and you need to exert an effort to extend it. Actually, the spring is compressed and wants to extend, so it pushes down against the clutch. So your depressing of the pedal actually helps it to extend. I thought the job of the spring was to pull the pedal back up, hence my confusion.

Well,sir, i totally prefer the factory setup, no mod for me; the factory KNOWS that the important thing on a clutch pedal is that it does NOT push back too much, on your left foot, as you wait for the light; and that is BEST with a stronger spring, because it acts as an OVERCENTER spring; as an engineer who designs clutches,i also do understand what science means here,but not everybody does. NOTE: as the disc wears down, as the clutch gets old,the overcenter point changes,of course, and THEN ,and only THEN, a softer spring is better; SO, if you drive a manual car, avoid wearing down your disc, always take off with the least gas(the least power) you can,and then,with your left foot well OFF,then you can floor it all you want,this way your clutch system will last you 20 years,like it is supposed to; remember,your left foot OFF the clutch pedal at ALL times except... you know the rest. And another great tip from a pro: coming to a stop,say,a light, you can put in in neutral WITOUT touching the clutch pedal, just balance the gas with the speed and the gear stick comes off smoothly,and you just doubled the life of the linkages and hydraulics,also a great source of trouble; i know,for the last 25 years,i repair them for a living.

Thanks for your comments, Tim. Yes, the spring buffers the force of the clutch itself. My goal was to chart how the pedal feel changed at various points in its travel, which I think it accomplished. I’m glad you were able to drive other information from the tests. Science aside, I’ve been enjoying the pedal feel in my car and I still have the spring in, but it’s nice to know that it’s reversible if I ever want to change it back. Thank you for watching him for commenting!

jonny10buds - cool! Do you already own the long-nose vice grips? I found them indispensable.

@@MikeFyxdt no unfortunately, I borrowed a pair off a local garage owner on the way to my storage unit this morning, fitted the spring and tested it returning the vice grips! If I'm honest I didn't feel a great difference but I have yet to go on a longer journey.

Is it lighter?

I think it’s heavier, not lighter. But more importantly it is smoother across the entire travel of the pedal.

Would driving the car without the spring cause any damage?

Nope. That’s an option. Muscles in your left leg might get bigger than the right tho...

@@N0b00st - thanks for the nice words! IDK what to tell you other than I've heard of people removing the spring entirely, but that's hearsay and I don't have any first hand knowledge. It's basically a linkage to the clutch, and the clutch assembly is so robust I don't think it will be affected by a heavy or light clutch pedal assist spring - or none at all. This replacement spring is strictly about how the pedal feels to the driver, and I don't think it has any affect on the clutch/transmission.

Hi CrackedBrain - Yes, suppose one could - and I hear that many do! The people who stand to make a profit selling the replacement springs have commented that it may cause long term wear if you operate the clutch without the return spring. Not totally objective information, but information none the less.

@@MikeFyxdt I've heard that before also but not sure how. If the clutch is not fully disengaged you could feel it. Also the pressure plate spring pushes the pedal back up. I have a McLeod rxt twin disk with no assist spring and the only difference is the pedal is a little harder to push in but the engagement point is easier to feel. With the stock spring in it didn't seem consistent. Also my car is a 13 gt.

@@crackedbrainOG You are correct in your comment. Ford put the spring in to assist the average daily driver that would not like the pedal feeling a bit strong..
@E52O4
@E52O4 5 жыл бұрын
You could, but the spring assists the pedal to fully disengage when it isn’t being used. Not having the clutch travel all the way up can damage the clutch governor, and eventually cause problems like clattering with your clutch plate.

@@E52O4 it can damage? Or will damage? Iv seen lots of videos on the spring removal and forums on the benefits but never any bad or damage that had occurred due to spring delete....or maybe someone has had adverse effects miles down the road I don't know? I'm really trying to figure out what to do... Because the clutch to the 15 to 18 is a bit frustrating

My 2021 Mustang GT premium was a big lemon...so yellow is the perfect color for that POS. I could live with the cheap plastic interior and glitchy electronics but the 6 speed manual transmission was just garbage! I'm not the only one who thinks so, look at the class action that has been launched against Ford. Fortunately I was able to sell it and buy a real car from another manufacturer. It's no wonder Ford stopped building cars...I'll never buy another Ford...EVER!

Oh, wow Mike! What a bummer. Mass production makes these cars affordable, and I guess that comes with its down sides. I am fortunate that my Mustang has been working great for 3 years, and I'm really glad I got the manual. So far the Steeda clutch assist spring has stayed in place, as I find it very comfortable. So what did you end up getting as a replacement?
