"I wanted to stop it there, but it would have been blasphemy." Finally! A man who understands! One does not simply stop the crescendo of Ghost Love Score on a first watch. You listen to it play out, and then you go back to try and parse out how it was done(always failing to do it justice, because this is one of the wonders of the world).

Knowing when not to stop is something that is lost on a lot of reaction channels. So many just pause it whenever they have a thought, or worse, talk through it. It's always nice to watch a video from someone who doesn't just want to analyse the vocals, but is actually reading what is happening.

There are at least 3 seperate Floorgasms in this performance alone... For me anyway it's not always about the high notes (although they're damned incredible). The staccatos around 13:28 are absolutely incredible vocal control and, like the man mentioned, the instant flick between angelic operatic to heavy metal near growl is the best kind of whiplash...

Nightwish Army is here!) Thank you for your reaction and analysis, cannot agree more! Welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal! Floor "Yansen" is the right way to pronounce, she is Dutch ;) Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor is a queen of singing emotions. A little bit of info on the band for you: Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show from August 2013). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM51q86evLGxdYk.html ) For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour (in October 2013), they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark. Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012. The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish. The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas. Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues. Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song. Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs. They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff. For the next Nightwish experience, I can suggest listening to: -- Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/maenp92anLeXcp8.html ) -- for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/maenp92anLeXcp8.html ) ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/maenp92anLeXcp8.html ) -- If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019: (Lady Gaga's Shallow for ex.) ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5xoo8hlxsWdqp8.html ) And a little bit more links that shows Floor's vocal diversity: Acoustic ("stripped down" vocals): How's The Heart ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7-knrOhq7_ef6M.html ) Classic opera: Puccini: O mio babbino caro ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8uErKSL2byZp30.html ) Classic duet: Phantom Of The Opera ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptJzhsab26qzeoE.html ) Soft pop: Shallow ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5xoo8hlxsWdqp8.html ) Touching, emotional soft: De Beelden Blijven (A Song for War Child) ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5xdabGH2MjLZok.html ) Growling: In Nightwish ( Yours Is An Empty Hope kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN98prhotpmXY58.html ), in ReVamp ( Wild Card kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdaKgKlysb_Jd5c.htmlm51s ) Latin: Qué Se Siente ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esyJmK-G1NfbYHk.html ) Greetings from Moscow and stay safe! ;) Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel! Hello @ Mike Goodrich! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band with Floor Jansen as a lead singer, performing in Wacken Open Air 2013, in front of 82k+ metal fans. Very interesting analysis, subsribed for that. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan: " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Other Nightwish songs with the current lineup of the band you may like: "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z76ZZ9FpybDHdmw.html "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orelaLSbzsqsh5s.html "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptybjNqAr8Czfok.html "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sOCParJ0qLfQiKc.html "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ51Zq9ozM2wfYE.html "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpuVnNeVkqulZn0.html "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odShmKxplZ2-nI0.html "Sleeping Sun"live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNmfp8-r15_bfqs.html "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM51qKSBvtPDhZs.html "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/radkZ9ebxraZnmQ.html "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJeFncqg38utgIU.html "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qphmpcKnpr-1YIU.html "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7RiZpyBx9fGmqM.html "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtyjmdpytci7iJc.html And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Wembley 2015 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN98prhotpmXY58.html Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzfaq.info/sun/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg You can also react to Floor Jansen's performances in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands), here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): kzfaq.info/sun/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo Thank you! I'm sure the Nightwish Army's heralds (Gabriel or Ann) will come soon with many recommandations. About Floor with Nightwish, for more belting, you could check "Ever Dream" (Wacken 2013) and for a softer song "Dead Boy's Poem" (Buenos Aires 2018). You should also check Marco, the other singer of the group, in "The Islander" (Tampere 2015) or "While Your Lips Are Still Red" (Wembley 2015). For Floor out of Nightwish, check all her performances from the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers 2019", from "Vilja Lied" (from the Merry Widow) to "Phantom Of The Opera" (Nightwish version with the opera singer Henk Poort) passing by "Shallow" (from A Star is Born). On the same show you'll find other interesting stuff : "Sound of Silence" (Henk Poort), "Vivo Per Lei" (Henk Poort + Emma Heesters : for me the best duet of the show) , "Hotel California" (salsa version by Rolf Sanchez), "Solo Otra Vez" (spanish version of "All By Myself" by Rolf Sanchez), etc... PS: about beautiful duet, why not "Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Somewhere" (Sharon Den Adel and Anneke Van Giersbergen) ? PPS: also many things in the new Nightwish's new album "HUMAN. :||: NATURE." : for instance the acoustic version of "How's The Heart" at Planet Rock.

You stroke a nerve right there..as far as I'm concerned, when you said 'she reminds me of my favorite rock&roll singer of all times'...I really wasn't expecting you to name Ann Wilson..but you did..and my mouth dropped wide open...This is the first time I hear somebody comparing Floor Jansen to Ann Wilson, and you Sir. dared to say what I've been thinking all this time, but that I never enunciated in words, just because of all the many bricks and stones that would be coming my way from Anne's detractors...That's right.. Someone had to say it, and I'm glad you did..Ann Wilson deserves to be recognized for what she gave us, in the history of rock&roll, particularly through the twentieth century, the same way now Floor is giving us perhaps the greatest female vocalist this century so far has seen.. Thank you very much! Just because of that seemingly unavailing observation, but which means really a lot, I'm hitting the SUBSCRIBE button after finishing this comment. And you're right..Stopping the video in the middle of the last section at the end, would've been sacrilegious 🙂 ..I probably wouldn't even be typing this comment now LOL Again thank you..Good job! 👍

It's funny how you mentioned Ann Wilson. Floor did a cover of Heart's song Alone with her first band After Forever. Tbh, I like Floor version better that the original but that's just my opinion. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9aogq6myquRj2Q.html Floor's cover of Alone Now it's time to give you a little background about Floor. She started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She also studied musical theatre and a year of opera. Floor has been a vocal coach herself since 2003. She's a soprano. In my opinion, the thing that makes her stand out from other singers in this genre is her versatility. She can sing opera, belt, growl. I'd recommend this for your next reaction: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z76ZZ9FpybDHdmw.html (OUT OF THIS WORLD BELTING) Ever Dream 2013 Wacken

Mike, I'm 60 this year and I also overlooked Nightwish. First thing...her name is Floor Jansen (pron Yan Sen) I have fallen absolutely head over heels for this band and sound. Always been a fan of orchestral rock, going back to early ELO and Kansas. These guys starting with Tuomas (too omas), Emppu, Marko, Jukka (you ka), Troy and Floor are on another plane. Formed in 96, the lead singing has evolved from their original singer Tarja (tar ya) to Annette (u net ta) to the current holder Floor. In my opinion, Floor owns that role. She had heighth, width, depth, color, texture and emotional range that can't be matched. I believe it is her role to quit. I don't believe she could be replaced with a talent equal to hers. My opinion only... Request for next reaction... Ever Dream But as you'll find, anything from the 2013 Wacken (VA Ken) concert will blow you away. Welcome to the Army!

Nice reaction! GLS is the most reacted to song, in the history of music video reactions. A bit ahead of Jinger Pisces. FYI:There were 82,000+ in the audience that night. It is the 13th of 15 songs that NW performed that night. I would recommend either 'Ever Dream' or 'Storytime'from the same concert for your next Nightwish reaction. Floor is the 3rd and still current female lead singer of Nightwish (est. 1996) She had been with the band for little over 10 months at the time of this concert on 03 August 2013. She started performing in her first Metal Band, After-Forever at the age of 16. After that band disbanded, she started her own band called Revamp. Which was on hiatus, when she received a call from Nightwish to take over the female lead singing duties mid-tour. The rest is herstory.

Great reaction. Floor Jansen is a pretty interesting vocalist because of the way she uses her voice. She makes extensive use of dynamics, a wide array of vocal colours, and shading and ornamentation within those vocal colours to communicate the story and emotions of the songs she performs. She also continuously works to expand her vocal toolkit by adding new things she can do. A few video recommendations for you that showcase various technical aspects of her singing (rather than just being fan favourites): Nightwish - Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Aires 2018 ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ51Zq9ozM2wfYE.html ) is a great performance for showing Floor's ability to almost continuously alter her vocal configuration to smooth out the transitions between vocal colours. Nightwish - How's the Heart live acoustic for Planet Rock ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7-knrOhq7_ef6M.html ) is another great one for showing Floor's ability to shift various aspects of her vocal configuration in real time. Also shows her deliberately using some pretty challenging configurations to achieve certain stylistic effects. It's a very technically demanding song to perform live in an acoustic format. Nightwish - Your's is an Empty Hope live from the Nightwish Cruise ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtqIpLh_p57eook.html ) Floor shows off her ability to do a false cord growl (it's her growling in the chorus) and some pretty hardcore distortion. And since everyone is going to start requesting her performance of Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort, I will mention now that she does some really interesting stuff with her approach to that song. She moves the first section up to soften it dynamically, she uses flicks into other vocal timbres for ornamentation at points, she does much of the verses in a quasi-classical mixed voice with vibrato rather than head voice, and in the crescendo she deliberately starts slightly quiet on the first note to give her room to go up in volume as well as pitch at each step for dynamics. It's pretty cool.

Great reaction, good balance between providing expert commentary and sharing your experience listening to this song for the first time. Looks like the Nightwish army is en route with their spark notes'ed histories of the band members which is great, there are so many Nightwish songs that benefit from know some back story. People will be throwing a whole ton of "next songs" at you, and you really can't go wrong with what you pick next. With that said, I'll leave here my own "highlights" for some of the most common Nightwish song requests: -- from the Wacken 2013 show: Romanticide: much more of a "regular" metal song, mostly showcases Floor's mix/rock voice versatility and range. Some awesome parts involving her and another band member on vocals! Everdream: another "regular" metal song. IMO, this is the best showcase of the raw, explosive power of Floor's voice. One of my personal favorite songs of theirs. Plus more amazing work by the other Nightwish vocalist! Storytime: one of their catchier songs, similar format to everdream or romanticide but with more symphonic elements. Another showcase of Floor's absurd vocal versatility and her preternatural stage presence. another personal fave. Dark Chest of Wonders: the opening song of their Wacken set, this song kicks ass. Features Floor effortlessly and rapidly switching between head/mix/chest voice. -- from other shows Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley 2016): I can't say enough good things about this song and this performance. it's a masterpiece, the magnum opus of the bands writer/composer (the keyboardist, Thomas), and a one-stop-shop of almost all of Floor's skills and talents, especially her ability to communicate emotion with her voice and her stage presence. There are multiple parts of this song where Floor's voice is, literally, *breathtaking* . This is also a very dark song, deeply intertwined with the history of the band and Tuomas' personal life. You absolutely must react to this song, but I'd personally recommend circling back to this one after you've watched a few more Wacken videos and gotten to know the band a bit more. Definitely *do* find the lyrics version of the Wembley performance (uploaded by some random KZfaqr/Nightwish fan, it's just the official video of the Wembley performance with on screen subtitles for all the lyrics + each of the movements in the piece) and read up on the backstory of the song (which I'm sure someone in the Nightwish army will helpfully provide in the comments). Greatest show on earth (Tampere, 2015(?)): Another magnum opus-type composition from Tuomas. Another one where you'll want to do a bit of research beforehand and try to pay attention to the lyrics. Not nearly as dark or as personal as poet and the Pendulum but still worth investing in the backstory and lyrics to get the most out of the performance. Featuring probably the most purely opera-like vocals that floor has done. Yours is an empty hope (some show they did on a cruise or something? Circa 2016): so you listened to romanticide and were like, "Floor can do heavy metal vocals?! Wow, now I've really seen everything! Is there any vocal style she can't do?" The answer is no. She can do it *all*. Even death growls.

Oh sir, you've just barely scratched the surface. Floor is the principal singer, but is many times backed up by the bassist Marco, and Troy (multi-instrumentalist, not seen in this song). The keyboardist Tuomas writes most of the material. Their work goes from heavy metal, to symphonic metal, to rock, to folk, many times in the same song! BTW, my bucket list dream is to have her and Dimash sing a few duets together in concert. I think the stage might just melt from such greatness together, lol. Now that you have got the Nightwish "gateway song" done, when you are ready, you can try almost any song from the Wacken Concert (of which this is a part of). Recommended songs would be "Storytime" "Yours is an Empty Hope" "7 Days to the Wolves", "Nemo". Longer pieces from other concerts would be "pit and the pendulum", "the greatest show on earth" (Tampere, and to get the full experience, watch through the end credits) and "the islander (Marco principle singer). Nightwish studio songs are good, but as you can see, they are just incredible live. Good luck on your continued foray sir. You won't be disappointed.

And you get to hear Marko (bass/vocals/guitar), he is a stunning vocalist too. They really don't have 2 songs that sounds the same and Tuomas creating these songs is just a genius to do it so it does not get repetitive. So hop in the train, buckle up and enjoy the ride! That was fun and interesting to watch. Subscribed because I am curious to see how your continued Nightwish journey goes. How come you have not known about this band before? Well, it is with split emotions that we here in Europe (Ireland for myself) make you in the US aware of the existence of this band. There is a great risk that it will create a demand for more tours and concerts in the US, and that will reduce the time available for Nightwish tours and concerts here in Europe. Ah well, I guess the cat is out of the box now, we just have to make the best of it. Looking forward to more Nightwish reactions (and maybe some Unleash The Archers. I love how you had a big smile on your face throughout the entire performance! That's what music is all about. Great reaction, I'd love to see you react to & analyse more Nightwish. It's an incredible band with more than one incredible singer. They are super versatile, you haven't seen anything yet! It's a band that ignores the existence of genres. I love that about them. For a different gear I recommend "Romanticide" or for more theatrics "Storytime", or for belting "Ever Dream", all from the same concert, Wacken2013. Oh and Floor would surely love that comment about Ann Wilson!

The best voice teacher reactions are the ones that actually explain the specific notes the singer is hitting. Thanks Mike!

Great reaction man! May I suggest Romanticide, Ghost River, Seven Days to the Wolves and Storytime for a few other songs by them? A rule of thumb with Nightwish is to go for the official live version whenever possible. Stay well and healthy!

This must be the the 50th or so reaction video I watch of this song, but it's the only one where I hit the subscription button. Sounds like this channel has a lot of valuable content that I can learn from.

As much as I love hearing Floor sing, I often enjoy her technical aspects even more. Have a watch of her Phantom of the Opera duet with Henk Poort. One could write an entire masters thesis on her performance there. The camera does a great job of capturing every nuance of her jaw and mouth positioning, to be able to vocally do what most only dream of.

I've seen many reactions and analysis of this song, and yours is definitely one of my favorites. That was absolutely great! Please react to Jinjer - Pisces (live session), and Tool - Sober (live 1993)

Floor's favorite song is from Heart, "How Do I Get You Alone". She does a cover of this which is absolutely amazing.

Mike, just wanna say a big thank you. It was so much fun watching you taking in this powerhouse called Floor Janssen. Your comments are really great. It helped me to even appreciate more what she is doing..and the band, they are awesome. I have seen loads of reactions but yours and that of "The Charismatic Voice" are the best on the net for me. Thanks a lot for the respect you show the music...loved when you said "it would have been blasphemy!". I have watched your analyisis at least five times today and gonna watch it again right after finishing this comment. Thank a lot!!

Such an amazing song, and Floor kills it! You're right, she can do anything with her voice, she's got it all and she knows how to play with it. So fun to watch!

Since you are interested in the vocal technique, in addition to analyzing Floor's approach, the band's original vocalist Tarja was also also classically trained and also had a fascinating voice too. Give her a listen with the song "Walking in the Air": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8eHg8emrdLDmmw.html or maybe a little of her beautiful singing in Finnish in Kuolema tekee Taiteilijan: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7Nppa1nxN6YcnU.html
