Hi Mike, I have tried all sorts of drying methods over the years and all with varying degrees of success, a lot seems to depend on the type of wood as some seem more prone to splitting than others. I have found that if i can get to the wood before they log it i like to leave it in 4 or 5 foot lengths and have found the end foot or so will split and the rest stays intact, It will be very interesting to see the results of your experiment though. As to turning the wet green wood i don't think there is anything more satisfying than seeing those long streamers of wood flying off your chisel, makes me feel like a proper wood turner

You made that look so easy, I am 63 years old and beat my hands up a lot at work and since I retired I got into woodworking and have just about every machine I need but I found out very quickly that wood turning on the lathe after a couple of hours is very painful and dangerous. Wood turners don’t get enough money for the work they put into the project. Good luck with your bowls. You’re very talented with your bowl gouging. Im using carbide tips and bought a 1/2” fingernail gouge and that is giving me fits. Lots of catches, it will take some practice for sure.

Thanks Mike, I started with carbide and moved over the a standard grind bowl gouge, lots of catches at the start but slowly got better. Now it feels like an extension of my own body, I still get catches but that is all part of turning. All the best, Mike

I got a smile from the video title. I have some of Dire Straits records on vinyl and some on CD. I love the colour of the willow grain. Sad that it is likely to darken as it dries. Fingers crossed they do not warp too much. I have some similar sized once-turned bowls which warped so much that even a 1in thick wall is not enough to be able to turn them a second time. Another option for fast drying is the microwave. I have done this a couple of times with spindle blanks. 20 sec in the microwave and several minutes to cool down. I learned the hard way that too long in the microwave without letting the piece cool can cause lets just say "excess heating effects". A local turning club member made a kiln from an old small refrigerator and e.g., 40W incandescent bulb for the heater. Some nice projects ahead for these pieces. Dave.

Thanks Dave, hopefully they will be ok but I will keep you updated. I tried microwave drying in my first few months of turning and made the same mistake you did. I was banned from doing it again as it took a week for the smell of burning oak to disappear 😂. I now have one in my workshop when I need to do some fast drying. I love Dire Straights and also have a few vinyl lp's 😀 All the best Mike

I was gifted some green oak, and have rough turned, and then tried both methods of leaving them to dry. Had some issues with mould on the blanks left in shavings, but they were very wet. My main fault was not leaving the blanks thick enough in some cases, and those warped so much the rims went way out of true. I ended up with half sized bowls once i turned them back to round!! You live and learn. Thanks for your very useful videos.

I love this. Some people go on vacation or a break and maybe take a pocket knife or another bigger knife in their baggage, you go for a few days away and take a chainsaw in you baggage .

Excellent job. This is a great experiment that most turners ought to work through. Of course there are loads of variables, but in my opinion roughing is key to successful drying.

That willow bowl must have turned out gorgeous. 🥰The pattern in the grain was so-o-o pretty. Some of the others were gorgeous as well, but I have no idea what they were. I love wood. I couldn't tell you what any one type is though. 🤭

Hi Mike, I have found that when air drying part turned pieces it is still necessary to seal thd end grains , this helps prevent splitting. I use undiluted pva glue used by plasterers to coat plaster board before apply plaster.

Hi Mike, have you thought about making your own kiln, using an old broken standup freezer? All you need to do to it is install a 100-wat incandescent light bulb on the bottom, a computer fan in the top and a household furnace thermostat to keep a constant temp. It will cut your drying time in half.

Hi Mike. Try giving the full surface a coat of Rustings sealer. Certainly 17:03 works on Pine. Apple to stop splitting. Chris

Hello mate, hope you're well! I enjoyed watching you experiment with this - I did similar a while ago and found a lot of benefits from part turning green wood and sticking it in a converted fridge I got for free. I just stuck a light bulb in it and it keeps about 22 degrees C. You could do a good video on making one and I bet you'll love the results - part turned blanks dry in about three weeks. I only have space in my fridge kiln for about a dozen blanks but it really makes a difference. Really enjoying your vids thanks!

HI, all well here thanks for asking 😀 I've often thought about making my own kiln but the main problem is that I just don't have the space in my workshop. I hope to be getting a new bandsaw in about 5 months and it will take some major reorganisation to get that in lol. With regards to the lathe, it's an absolute game changer. It's given me confidence to take on larger projects and my results are better as I can now safely apply final cuts at a decent speed. Very cool idea for turning "wet" wood. I've run across a few pieces like this myself and have just set them on a shelf until they dry. I just use a moisture meter to determine if the pieces are dry enough then. Can't wait to see the results from your experiment!

Good video and information,a wee tip,leave a dimple in the tenon so you can center after drying,also if you chamfer the edges on the rim ,it prevents the edges splitting.

G’day Mike, good idea, I have done this in past, both options, but prefer to let wood dry out naturally. I think grain and colour is better and as you turn you can change design on fly to suit your piece of timber. I turn a lot of natural edge which works out better if left to dry naturally.thanks for sharing. It will be interesting to see your results in 6 months or so.

Coincidence ive just taken a large willow down , ive not seen anyone turn it before but heard it can be a bit stringy , im certainly going to cut some blanks and store them thanks Mike 👍

This was as wet as the ash but different to turn, I think stringy is a good way of putting it, let me know how you get on.

The drying using the shavings works best for me. Will be interested in your result. Two points: With wet shavings, there is a risk of mould. And keep an eye on your lathebed, especially under the headstock as water can get underneath and cause rust.

Good haul. I want to see you remount these after they have dried and warped a little. I notice you did not leave a tailstock hole in the tenons, so am interested in your process. By the way, I have that same model lathe and love it! Someday you should use the outrigger attachment and turn a large platter. It works rather well.

Interesting video, I have tried many methods for drying rough turned wood and do not have a favourite as it depends on the piece of wood. As well as cracking and distortion I find mold an annoying issue which putting in boxes makes worse. Looking forward to seeing your results. Couple of suggestions, round over the sharp edges of the bowls as these are stress points and get yourself a nice bandsaw (the more powerful the better).

I have stacks of one turned bowls adding up. I found putting end seal in the out side end grain got less checking over all. Something I've watched on other videos. Hope the new space is working out.

I’m very interested in finding out which way works the best. We had some storms here a couple months ago and I have quite a bit of wet wood. I tried turning one piece making a vase completely finished it. Took it in the house and found it split down the backside. Another piece. I was going to do another vase and got about halfway then went down sick. Several days past before I got to go back to my lathe and it had split and cracked all over. I had watched one channel that said you could turn wet wood and then put a sealer on it. It might change shapes a little bit, but the sealer would allow it to slow dry without cracking. Well it did not work for me. I will be watching for your updated videos on this drying process.

Hi Lynda, there are so many variables when drying wood, one important point is to made sure the pith is not in the final piece as it can cause most of the cracking. If you are wanting to dry something really fast then it's possible to part turn like this video, then dry using a microwave. There are a few video's showing this technique and it's worth watching before you have a go. Good luck and let me know how you get on. All the best, Mike

You were in Dire Straights with that green wood, good plan though to part turn them, you'll save so much time with the drying out process. You can always use a handsaw Mike to knock the edges off. Where did you get the half logs from Mike?

Very interesting ideas on drying greenwoods. I'm looking forward to seeing the results. (I didn't know there's a problem with mosquitos in your part of the world? Anyone who ventures further north than Perth & doesn't get a wee nip or two from our unfriendly midge should instantly buy a scratch card. In saying that, they like to mooch about here in Airth. Avon's skin so soft does the trick to repel them. An old military trick. Only thing being it's really girly perfumed, but it stops the wee gits

Why are you cutting away the tailstock support now? Would it cause a different warping issue? Or would the little tower move too far off of center to be useful anyway once the bowl dries?

Hi Steve, the tenon will be enough to hold it while I cut a recess on the inside to be able to hold it again and reform the base with a new tenon or recess.

Hi Peter, I guess it would work although it may dry them too fast and put the wood under stress, but to be honest that is just an assumption as I don't really know.

Hi Mike; I have mostly tried this with slightly smaller pieces, wrapped in c30 sheets of newspaper, left for a year or so. This has been reasonably successful (so far?)

Hi Matt, my first bits I found while out walking the dogs. But a better bet is to try local timber yards that sell wood for burning, they will have logs available in decent sizes you can buy before they get cut up. Also try local tree surgeons, they are usually happy to pass on fresh timber or sell for cheep. Hope this helps, Mike

How long does it generally take to dry out half-turned bowls?

Depends where you are in the world, if you are in a very dry climate, could be a couple of months, humid climate could take a year.

I don't think I've ever heard the estimate for drying as 1 year per inch. Interesting.

Hi Susan, it's a fairly standard measurement but obviously it depends a lot on storage temperature and humidity 😁

I have done several bowls your way, but with the addition of AnchorSeal on the exposed ends top and bottom. Not sure the AnchorSeal was any kind of bonus, certainly took longer to dry “naturally”. In some cases it really caused more problems, I.e., failures. 😢. AnchorSeal is touted by American turners. My impression is that it is an expensive product that really hasn’t been all that good a solution. My bet is that it took more time to dry the product to acceptable levels. But, then, I may just be a crackpot - at the very least, it led to more cracked bowls…

In theory it fine to use, it slows down the drying process but as far as I'm concerned does not save them from cracking (it just takes longer) the same can be done by using wax, paint or thinned out wood glue. Of all the bowls I've part turned I've only ever had one crack.

I have tried so many different ways but not a lot of success, someone did say to turn it like you have to a 1” think then use the microwave, I think you need a old one don’t use the best kitchen one it stinks and the sap goes everywhere so I been told, anyone else tried it?

Thanks, it is not great for turning as the end grain is almost impossible to sand out
