I am a huge MP fan and this is my favorite drum track of his. It's not his most technical, or most diffcult but the tempo and the way he clearly drives this song just gives me chills. He is the master of what he does.

These are just fun videos for reference. Hes not actually recording his album takes. These are the live groups play throughs so naturally he changes stuff up. Its what MP does. If its his song, he cant technically play it wrong lol

Not really, you can notice with many other bands the drummers don't play exactly the same, for example Alex Bent comes to mind as i've seen multiple of his videos, he doesn't always use the same cymbals, he sometimes uses the hi hat instead of the ride, sometimes in between he has a small fill sometimes he doesn't, etc...

Mike my beautiful friend this is your best band, this is your best music, Sheehan and Kotzen are the best damn musicians on the planet, and Kotzens is one of the best vocalists on the planet! Just in case you weren't sure if it was Portnoy when you listened to it, aside from putting in signature fills such as the "four on the top, two on the bottom" rolls, the bits such as right at the begining are straight from "The Dance of Eternity" and the two bits (one of which is at 2:11) are almost identical to the opening of "This Dying Soul". There's something great about hearing nuances that your favourite artist pulls out every so often which is almost like nostalgia.
