Perrin hesitated before answering. He had dreaded this. He felt about wolves as he did about Two Rivers People. "They have caged Shadowkiller," he thought at last. That was what the wolves called Rand, but he had no idea whether they considered Rand important. The shock filling his mind was answer enough, but howls filled the night, near and far, howls filled with anger and fear. In the camp horses whinnied fearfully, stamping their hooves as they shied against the picket ropes. Men ran to calm them, and others to peer into the darkness as if expecting a huge pack to come after the mounts. "We come", Half Tail replied at last. Only that, and then others answered, packs Perrin had spoken to and packs that had listened silently to the two-legs who could speak as the wolves did. We come. No more.

Rand's viewing the Aiel's history is incredible. Like a ton of this series, gets even better on re-read.

I was actually frustrated with that chapter the first time I read it because I was uncertain what was really happening or not. I re-read it after I finished TSR and thought it was brilliant. This is why I can see how folks say the series is actually better on a re-read.

I 100% agree. Mainly because it was that point where you grasped how amazingly intricate RJ's whole universe was: From the fact that two completely opposite cultures introduced 4 books prior (Aiel and Tinkers) were in fact bound together in a common history, to something as subtle as why the Aiel despise swords and cover their faces when they fight is in fact how they twisted their history 1000's of years ago. Heck, there's even the subtle way that the Forsaken call them the "so-called Aiel", knowing what the Aiel were and what they are now. It was at this point the full brilliance of Robert Jordan's world hit me like a truck

Dumai's Wells wins it for me, not just because of the battle, but with how Jordan wraps it up. I can so see it as a series finale in the TV show, with the last few moments being this smoking battlefield with the Banner of Light floating above all, with a narrator closing it out: "On a day of fire and blood, a tattered banner waved above Dumai's wells, bearing the ancient symbol of Aes Sedai. "On a day of fire and blood and the one power, as prophecy had suggested, the unstained tower, broken, bent knee to the forgotten sign. "The first nine Aes Sedai swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn, and the world was changed forever. "

One thing I love is Matt kicking the snot out of Galad and Gawyn with his quarter staff in The Dragon Reborn. It’s not important to the story other than it sets up Matt as a bad ass, but it’s just a super fun read! Other than that I have no problem with your list. I can’t wait for you to read the next 2 books. A lot of people rank these in the bottom but I personally think they are way under rated. Have fun and looking forward to more reviews!

My favorite part of the Nyn-v-Mog fight was the comment that someone looking at them would just see two women staring daggers at each other and not know they were locked into a battle of Power (before they started smashing the heck out of everything, of course). The Lanfear-v-Moiraine battle was so epic. I wonder if the TV show will include the moment Lanfear exploded the wagon she was in and literally skinned the guy who told her Rand had slept with Avi. It's such a short moment in an overwhelming scene but it makes me shudder every time I read the series! The reason I love the Battle of Emond's Field is that it's the most human battle up to that point. It wasn't a huge army. It wasn't trained soldiers. It was just average folks turning up to protect their homes. Faile riding through TTR to gather people from other villages, coming in with the save, was great. Loial protecting the kids but then getting all Angry Ogier on those Trollocs, glorious. There are real consequences from that battle, and the village changes after that. Which is so real. They wouldn't just go back to the way things were, before. It's a turning point for Perrin in a huge way. Perrin is a bit Emo, and it does get worse, but it also gets a lot better. Perrin is my favorite of the Ta'veren boys. His best scenes are yet to come, for you!

My personal favorite moment is Rand’s vision of the Aiel’s history. It actually blew me away how much we don’t know about the world and it’s history. 10. A Morning of Victory for Egwene in Crown of Swords where Egwene's battle through those Halima induced headaches to assert herself against Salidar Aes Sedai's machinations and in the process, earn Gareth Bryne's admiration & respect in real-time. 9. The Conclusion to The Great Hunt. The scenes from Perrin & Rand's respective POVs are exhilarating. 8. The Escape from the Bubble of Evil & Subsequent Healing of Rand by Flinn with Aes Sedai watching with incredulous impotence after their attempts failed, in Crown of Swords. 7. Rand trying to get a peek at Logain as he is paraded captured through Caemlyn in Eye of the World, leading to him ending up meeting the Andoran Royal Family. 6. Mat's escape from Tar Valon in The Dragon Reborn... First the White Tower itself, then his adventures in the City and the introduction of his Luck and the return of Thom. Then getting onto the Ship to Leave. 5. Mat breaking into The Stone of Tear with Juilin Sandar in The Dragon Reborn to rescue The Supergirls. 4. Mat Levelling Up to Legendary General in Fires of Heaven specifically... And the whole Battle of Cairhien in general, in Fires of Heaven. 3. Nynaeve surrendering to Saidar and overcoming her block in Mashiara Chapter of Crown of Swords. All the way through to getting saved by Lan and making the decision to get married. 2(a) (b) These are both Perrin Scenes that I cannot separate. Chronologically, The Battle of Two Rivers comes first and is filled with moments ranging from the poignant to the desperate to the absolutely thrilling. Even though it is longer and has more to it, I cannot separate it from my other favourite Perrin scene, when he tells the wolves about Rand having been kidnapped by Aes Sedai, just before Dumai's Wells. 'We Come.' Those two words are enough to turn me into a blubbering mess every time I consider how much they mean, after Perrin tells the Wolves they have caged Shadowkiller! 1(a) (b) These are the Two Best Rand Scenes which again, I cannot separate. Chronologically, The Way of the Leaf in The Shadow Rising is I think the peak of Jordan's achievement as a writer, when Rand views the History of the Aiel through the eyes of his ancestors, on the way to becoming Car'a'Carn. And Jordan matches that peak for the best Climactic Scene in All of SFF Genre Fiction, imo, with Dumai's Wells, where two words again, this time cause me to erupt in celebration at the moment when our Hero's peak potential is fulfilled, with a power that is both momentarily satisfying, but also powerfully portentous about the dangers that now lie on the other side of this precipice. 'Asha'man KILL!' So, I guess I cheated a bit by squeezing a Favourite Dozen into my Top 10, but ranking them this way most accurately reflects my pure emotional response to these moments. Interestingly enough, only Knife of Dreams from the subsequent books contains any scenes that come close to being able to squeeze into this Dozen, for mine. Puts things into stark perspective for me when I think about Wheel of Time in these terms.

I also love "Great Hunt" (probably my #3 behind "Shadow Rising" and "Memory of Light"). It is clearly where Jordan stepped away from any homage to Tolkien and went his own way. The pacing was the BEST of any book in the series. It's not a page-turner, it's a page-burner. That climax was so satisfying and exciting. Best moment in 1-7 for me is always, always Dumai's Wells. A big part of that is because it incorporates my favorite hair-on-the-arm-standing-up, lump-in-the-throat moment when Perrin sends to the wolves "They have caged Shadowkiller." "HOWWWWWL. We come." I love that the wolves are so invested in Rand and they also give him his most bad@ss nickname in the series. And yes, when he busts out of the chest I grabbed my popcorn like "Oh snap! It's about to go down!"

Awesome list. I have the same #1 moment as well. That scene was very intense. We only witnessed Rand’s parallel lives but it was crazy to see how shaken all the others were after that experience. The accepted tests that the girls go through had a similar vibe as well. The Great Hunt has so many cool moments in it that I have make it into the show: The Darkfriend Social, Padan Fain getting very dark, the first time we see the Game of Houses, Flicker Flicker Flicker, Rand taking the horn from the Trollocs, the entire third act, the accepted test.

Jordan's style is very entertaining and satisfying. He has essentially 800-1000 pages to set up an event, and that set up lets him knock it out of the ballpark. He has other smaller set ups, and he works them brilliantly but they still are like 3-500 pages of build up.

@@mikesbookreviews great idea! You'll need to collect them in a note book so you can recall them later. I saw the video and I must say we touched on many of the same moments. Yay us! I totally understand where you come from with your number 1, flicker flicker. I also loved it, it had a skind of omnious and sad feeling about it. I think that during this re-read I get more emotional during the sad parts than the first time... Maybe because I feel so deeply for some of the characters. Keep up the great work, I like what you do.

Mike! Listening to you compare The Wheel of Time series 2 tokens Lord of the Rings reminds me of something Dave Chappelle said with regards to Richard Pryor and his influence in comedy in a documentary called why we laugh. He said " if comedy were a woman then Richard Pryor would have fu@#edv every orifice of her body. There's not a place in modern stand-up that Richard Pryor didn't touch." It's the same with Tolkien. If modern fantasy were a woman there wouldn't be an orifice or position Tolkien hadn't done. As dry as I find tolkien's writing I have to acknowledge Him as the Godfather of modern fantasy. I have to say I really enjoy you going back over these books and giving a top 10 moments. It's like when you recommend a book or series to a friend and when they finish it they're talking to you and gushing about what they liked and how cool it was while you nod your head going see I told you! This is a little off topic but will you ever do a book review of The Dark Tower? You know Amazon is supposed to be doing a Dark Tower series but I haven't heard anything since they announced it. Perhaps a potential video could be a Dark Tower dream cast and director. This is going to sound odd but I would love it if Quentin Tarantino directed A Dark Tower series

When I make comparisons to Tolkien and Frank Herbert it is because those are the two authors I use as a measuring stick for any Fantasy/Sci-Fi I read. It's "the bar," so to speak. If I come off as the "TOLKIEN DID IT FIRST" type, I'm truly not trying to. As for Dark Tower, I was considering a Why You Should Read for it, but figured I'd wait until the Amazon series gets closer.

@@mikesbookreviews well I appreciate you getting back with me Mike. I didn't really mean anything by my comment it was just an observation that pretty much every author in some way shape or fashion takes from Tolkien. When I use the Richard Pryor example one thing I left out was another comedian Damon Wayans saying if you haven't stole from Richard Pryor you ain't doing it right! 😉😜 I guess it makes sense to wait until the Amazon production for The Dark Tower is further along. I'm not even sure what exactly they are going to do. Originally it was supposed to be a series based off of wizard and glass but considering how poorly that movie did I've heard talk of them simply doing the series as a whole.

@@williamjones3534 Oh, I know you didn't mean anything negative. I just wasn't sure if I came off that way of doing a SIMPSONS DID IT kind of thing, ha ha. That Dark Tower movie was a got dang abomination and they should burn the master copies of it.

I'm at this point in the series now. Agree completely about the circus part of fires of heaven.. good lord... drank whiskey just to get thru those elayne and nynaeve chapters. So far I've hated most elayne and nynaeve POV chapters. I don't mind the characters I just hate riding around from their perspective, at least when they are away from either tower and off by themselves. Egwene POV got easier after her time with the Aiel.

All of yours are good choices. I think the two for me that would be up there are Rand's trip through the Aiel history ter'angreal in TSR and Mat stumbling out of bed following his healing and defeating Galad and Gawyn in TDR.

I'm currently re-reading the series in prep for the TV show. It's an unpopular opinion but "The Great Hunt" is probably one of my least favorite books. At least in the first 7 anyways. It's been nearly 25 years since I first read it, so it's impossible for me to remember how I felt the first time. On rereads however, the last third is awesome but the first two-thirds is a slog for me. I practically hear the benny hill music as rand is trying o hide in Fal Dara. The whole Selene thing doesn't work when knowing who she is.
