Ive been using these exact ponchos (different color) for a few years now and havent any issues. I understand that Helikon Tex makes a similar poncho with no PU coating so should be almost identical to the USGI poncho and lighter as well.

While it is true that Mil-Tec is a German company, it's only a Handelsgesellschaft i.e. a trading company, they outsource products from China. I just had a very nasty experience with one of their products, a repro old-style German Army penknife, in black with ''powder coating'' on the blade & other tools. I knew that there would be some play i.e. sidewards wobbling on the tools and blade, after all it only cost me £8, I managed to saw thru a piece of wood about 3cm thick without too much difficulty, even the original German Army Victorinox saw was limited as it was only 4cm long because at the end there is a bottle opener/screwdriver combi, but when I tried to whittle the same piece of wood with the blade I was shocked to see a 1mm thick part of the blade flake off in about a 1cm square! So the powder coating is pretty thick on the blade! Basically it's worthless to me now, I wouldn't even cut food with it for fear of getting bits of whatever that coating is in my food. Chucked it in the bin now and bought a Victorinox civilian model with saw, which I should have done in the first place tbh. Original German Army knives of that style are only available from German suppliers second hand and the Victorinox ones are going for a premium, and even then you have know way of knowing how much the blade has been ground down after years of use, so I reckon I won't be able to replace the one I had back in the 90s and lost, which is a shame. The new German Army model, sold as the Victorinox Soldier, doesn't cut it imho (excuse the pun) because the main blade is mostly serrated, so it would be a bugger to sharpen. Anyway back to the main point, in Germany many people call Mil-Tec ''Muell-Tec'', Muell means rubbish. So when looking for ponchos I wasn't tempted to buy a Mil-Tec one, even though the Flecktarn ones look nice visually. Plumped for a Dutch Army surplus poncho in woodland, I know this will be robust and won't let me down.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Simple logic - If you buy cheap you buy twice! I think this advice is several thousand years old! 😄 - The poncho is good for a year or two but not much more! 👍
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors Yeah I know, and I knew it before buying the repro knife, I just took a gamble and was missing my old German Army knife. Now I ordered a Victorinox like I should have in the first place. I also ordered a Dutch Army surplus poncho rather than opting for any civilian versions, not even the Helikon one tempted me, because I lived in Holland and know what they make is going to be bombproof, plus it will be waterproof as it rains a hellluva lot there, plus it's a bit bigger because Dutch people are very tall lol so it ticks all the boxes

@@TheEmporiumOutdoors And the latest version of this is nearly $50 US on Amazon, made from PVC coated polyester. Maybe good for a couple of trips. I like the poncho for use with a bivy, as well as a competent piece of outwear. But if the only durable choice is a heavy/bulky oiled canvas type, I'd consider ditching the bivy, poncho/tarp, and woobie -- and just carry a Helikon Swagman roll or the Hill People Gear mountain serape (if they ever start producing them again). So much depends on the degree of flexibility your needs and preferences require. Anyone with a fully equipped gear locker can find the right stuff, for a price!

The Emporium All jokes aside - it is technically a temperate rainforest... we get summer droughts and rain periods, but yes, we do get a lot of rain. For example it has rained practically non-stop for the last 24 hours, and not a drizzle, I'm talking solid rain. In fact since New Years I can count on one hand the days it hasn't rained. Yet I'd take the rain over the Californian droughts anytime!

If anyone can hear this problems please reply to this comment. I purchased so many poncho from the rothco military poncho, frogg toggs, and now the anyoo tarp poncho. These were a poncho I bought and the frogg toggs poncho had worn out but it still done a better job than the two I bought. Now tell me if I'm doing this wrong that, when the poncho comes in to the door step can I actually use it immediately? Fact that I am not so sure if the hood is the problem or the fabric is having difficulty with me. I used it plenty of times the poncho actually seeps water in. It should be waterproof said in the package but why am I having diffculties with the outdoor products? Would you tell me that the outdoor retailers are not telling me the exact priority in using the product? Or is it that there are so many scams that are trying to rip me off?
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
They should be waterproof from the start. 2 reasons you maybe getting wet. Make sure you buy a poncho with taped seams OR seam seal the seams when you get it. Secondly, you will still sweat under a poncho (not as much) and this will cause moisture. I has no issues with the Mil-Tech and the fabric is PU coated on the inside too. Hope that helps!

@@TheEmporiumOutdoors I live not too far from where Snugpak are based (Silsden in Yorkshire). Though designed there, the products are made in China. I have not issue with this. What I do have an issue with is that I cannot believe the hype. I walked the dog this morning in the 'Enhanced Tactical Poncho' and the rain came straight through it. 100% waterproof my arse! I am, frankly, amazed that they can get away with this scam. I also have the Miltec. It is heavier but there is a reason for that. Without the weight it could not be as water resistant as it is. It has not let me down.

I would like to know how you join two mil tec ponchos together to make a larger tarp, the studs would need to be oppersite way around on the right hand side to the left hand side to use these to join the tarps with an overlap.
