From a fan perspective, the biggest problem with the NHL is ownership. Lots of bad owners. Cheap, incompetent owners. Corporate owners. The very worst are the absentee owners who only bought the team for status & to watch the franchise value increase (see NYI). If Flames ownership doesn't do what's necessary to change the both the internal culture of the team and perceptions of the franchise around the league, it will never happen.

saint louis blues are just an investment. the business model is to always make playoffs and profit. the problem is mediocrity , never having franchise players and long long long long droughts between championships .. mediocrity .. probably not the worst owners but at the end of the day the blues are just a profit machine for s group of millionaires / billionaires

Flames passes on lucic and lewis because they qant to go youmger. Lucic and tofolli were sutter gus too and caused a devide in the locker room. There may not be a baseball or basketball team to go see, but there are far more things to do in Calgary than just watch hockey. And it's not even having to find hidden gems, there are lots of things in or around Calgary to do that any native Calgarian would know.

I don’t know how credible that list is, but colour me shocked that Ottawa isn’t on there. I know that they’re a team that’s on the rise and all, but it’s actually a pretty nice place to live in all things considered. Guess I’m biased since I was born and raise there, but others who live/have lived there would probably feel the same way.

I don't think the nitpicks they have with the city matter much to the players. They will go to where they think they can win, and Calgary has been stuck a perpetual state of mediocrity since their 2004 Finals run. If Conroy builds a contender, the free agents will come.

I've watched lots of episodes of the Locked on Flames and Locked On Winnipeg Jets' podcasts, but also plenty of videos narrated and produced by the Peg City Hockey KZfaq man. Neither the Jets nor Flames have had loads of playoff success recently even with, arguably, the Canucks, Flyers, blue Jackets, Hawks, Yotes, Sharks, Caps, Pens, Preds, Sens Ducks, Wild, Kings, Wings and Sabres each having, by the end of last season, longer playoff series win droughts than the Jets or Flames. So when did each Canadian NHL team last win playoff series in consecutive seasons? The Jets have yet to do so even with playoff appearances 5 of the last 6 seasons while the: - Oilers are the most recent such teams to win playoff series during consecutive seasons (2 wins 2 seasons ago, 1 win in April) - Canucks last strung together such a streak from the 2008-09 to 2010-11 season - Flames, from the 1987-88 to 1988-89 season - Leafs, from the 1998-99 to 2001-02 season - Sens, from the 2005-06 to 2006-07 season - Habs, from the 2019-20 to 2020-21 season Thus, in terms of most-recent to least-recent pairing (or better) of seasons with 1 or more playoff series wins, the: - Oilers come 1st - Habs, 2nd - Canucks, 3rd - Sens, 4th - Leafs, 5th - Flames, 6th - Jets, due to, unlike the Flames, having never won playoff series in consecutive seasons, come 7th by default During the cap era, quite a few teams have had such lengthy droughts that I doubt attracting free agents was easy during those seasons. The Oilers, at 10 straight seasons, have the longest-ever drought of playoff appearances among Canadian teams although at 7 (from the 2005-06 to 2011-12 season) is up there, too. On the Oilers' so-called decade of darkness, the England-based Odd Man Rush KZfaq man posted in December 2019 a video titled "Whatever happened to...Nail Yakupov?," with the winger having come nowhere close to having made a positive impact on the Oilers' lack of point production even with said winger having been drafted 1st overall in his draft year.

I agree with you, but the fact is , certain cities are always going to be less desirable to young millionaires. It could be argued that Edmonton is a worse city to live in than Calgary, and if given the option most people will choose Vancouver I'd imagine. Especially if money is no object. I think the appeal a winning team and a game plan will always matter to the best of the best, but if there is a tie-breaker....teams on the Canadian prairies? There are certain downsides. And honestly? it's not always the tax rate. Combining federal and provincial/state income tax level? Virtually the same in New York and California as Alberta at the tax bracket NHL players make. I don't know, I suppose depending on the life you want.....might Living in Los Angeles or....well....any where but Winnipeg, bight be more appealing.

They are getting a NEW RINK, its a good city, and the BEST PLAYER on ANY NHL TEAM is always the GENERAL MANAGER!!! He assembles the team & is the main reason a team wins the CUP or gets to the CUP FINAL. Players can always book their flights to Hawaii on their off days -- if that floats their boat...... The battle of Alberta will improve both clubs & bring the CUP back to Alberta--- maybe even to both citys........ crazy stuff CAN HAPPEN!!

As a lifelong Flames fans, yeah, they are a terrible destination. Main thing being the management is awful. They make one boneheaded short-sighted gamble after the other and it never pays off. The Flames are kind of a joke. Phaneuf. Bouwmeester. Camalleri. Iginla. Brouwer. Neal. Bennett. Gaudreau. Tkachuk. Kadri. Markstrom. One poorly handled contract after the other the team is a joke. It's like monkeys in charge flinging poo at a wall. If you look league wise it's tough to find a franchise that makes bad decisions more regularly, would trade the current flames roster for pretty much anyone else in the league. Coyotes, Red Wings, Ottawa... all have way more optimism than the Flames.

As a native Calgarian (of many , many years) I like my city , and I’m proud of the fact that it routinely ranks in the top 10 cities in the world to live in. However , I also understand there are some things that aren’t attractive to people (like the cold , high taxes , and less “culture” ... which can be said about most Canadian cities compared to the US). But Canada is hockey’s birthplace. It would be nice if these self proclaimed “toughest athletes on the planet” , making millions of dollars off the sport we created , would be more respectful to the country of the sports origin , and stop whining about the cold , travel , lack of extracurricular activities and higher taxes. Most are getting paid a ton , they can afford slightly higher taxes. And there’ll be plenty of time to take their millions and go play in the sun after their careers are over. I’m tired of hearing about it , and tired of listening to crybabies who have been given too much power through the CBA to pick and choose where they play. It’s a privilege to play in the NHL. They get paid a ton. In order to give all teams a chance to be competitive , teams and owners should be given back a few more rights and power , because the reality is , players are a commodity. They should accept that if they’re going to also accept the millions of dollars being put in their pockets.
