All the available material from Miles's appearance at the 1971 Cascais Jazz Festival, now with improved video- *HOWEVER*, thanks to KZfaq's copyright algorithms, a short section of footage has had to be obscured. See the notes below.

Honky Tonk [incomplete] (M. Davis) 4:15
Funky Tonk (M. Davis) 15:28/
Sanctuary [theme] (W. Shorter-M. Davis) 35:23
Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) TV broadcast
This footage, from the first Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971, has been posted to KZfaq by other channels before but no versions are complete and have other deficiencies. I came across the footage from a couple of different sources in extremely variable quality so I have attempted to compile everything available, even out some of the visual differences and edit out some superfluous material. What's left is obviously imperfect, but it's a fascinating glimpse of another officially undocumented Davis band.
The opening footage, of Miles backstage, is very good (it's accompanied by an excerpt of Sanctuary, in good quality stereo sound, recorded at the Dietikon concert of 1971). It's followed by a stage announcement by festival organiser Luiz Villas-Boas in poor quality, then cuts to much better footage of the band taking to the stage. This portion of video had no audio, possibly because the original TV broadcast included officially released music (I have dubbed in a small portion of music from the concert). The show opens with two minutes of the regular set opener from this period, Directions. The footage is fairly poor, originally very dark and murky, which I have brightened. The visuals are still very blocky, with a lot of digital artefacting. The audio here is acceptable enough, in what sounds like (electronically channelled?) stereo.
The remainder of the footage is also poor but watchable and the raw footage, while still black and white, had a green tint to it, possibly the result of multiple generations of copies being made. I took the green out and again brightened the image. The sound is mono and, while not hi-fi, is decent enough. This portion of video started with a minute and a half interview with an unidentfied man, conducted in Portuguese. I have eliminated this footage, as it had no musical content. About halfway through this performance there was a station break, with a title card and a few seconds of unrelated music (taken from a live version of So What). I have removed this, as it interrupted the flow of the concert footage. From 22'09 to 23'29 there is a portion of footage which KZfaq's algorithms would not permit me to post, due to a copyright claim by broadcaster RTP. Unfortunately, I have had to digitally obscure this section of footage (the audio is uninterrupted). A huge pity, but nothing can be done.
There is footage extant of Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, and The Giants Of Jazz (Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt) from this festival in very good quality. It's unfortunate the Miles footage is mostly so poor. It is rumored that better quality footage is in circulation amongst collectors and presumably still exists in the RTP vaults, so hopefully one day we will be able to see this remarkable footage in better quality (if KZfaq allows it to be posted!). Until then, enjoy.
Oh, and... MILES SMILES!

re Keith - When I listen to interviews that he did regarding this era he says things that indicate that he agreed , at Miles behest, to play electric with him (Miles) in his band. So what you are seeing is a musician who is pushing himself to be - as is often said these days- out of his comfort zone. Sometimes being out of one's comfort zone can result in something creative and beautiful and sometimes it just does not come off. Artists push themselves and Miles, it is said, did this all the time. He was driven. There is a lot to be said about coming out of one's comfort zone. One really has to be willing to do that and embrace it - feel motivated or compelled within yourself to want to do it - or be inspired to. I believe you cannot always be made to do it. There has to to be a desire to do that. It may be untapped or unconscious. Sometimes you just don't know until you try. And - as I said - sometimes that leads to greatness and sometimes it don't. So - you just learn from that. Now as for the racial piece - I don't know about Keith's heritage to comment, but I knew white folks that had perms and such done as that was "in". Hell, even Eric Clapton tried to do that sort of thing post Hendrix exploding in England some 4 years earlier.

THE 1971 EUROPEAN TOUR started in MUNICH on Oct 17, 1971 Kongress-Saal Deutsches Museum There were 2 concerts this evening starting at 19.00 hours and 22.00 hours (maybe 21.45) Because of only few visitors (audience of about 500 persons in a hall with a seating capacity of 2500) the promoter offered to visit the second appearance for all those with tickets of the 1st set. Therefore I listened both breathtaking gigs. The day after on Oct 18, 1971 the Septet played in FRANKFURT two sets like in MUNICH. I drove to Franfurt and reached in time the second set - marvelous! Probably on Oct 19, 1971 the Miles Davis Group guested in STUTTGART - 2 sets. Visit www.plosin.com/milesAhead/Sessions.aspx?s=711105 for tour plan the Concert Poster FRANKFURT can be called up there

Disappointed that I couldn't post this show without making a major compromise in the quality of a portion of it (it literally took six attempts at re-editing and reposting before KZfaq let it through). Ironically, other (incomplete) versions of this show seem to have bypassed the algorithms by being poorer quality. I'm not sure how this helps anyone, but there it is. 1:46-50 = Keith Jarrett w/ a beer bottle? That's new to me! This 1971 band was in a way the best of Miles' 1970s 'Electric Period' a perfect blend of Groove and poly-rhythmic oriented back bone and 'ethos' (Ndugu + Don Alias + Mtume) coupled w/ just the right amount of harmony & color explorations in the middle (Keith Jarrett). And both Gary Bartz Miles soaring on top w/ beautiful melodic inventions. Back in '71 Miles was in still relatively good health and still in top musical form. His health would start to decline thereafter and in my humble opinion, the music would start to slowly become somewhat erratic and not as focused as it was here.

Obviously what’s interesting is that it’s a transitional group in terms of personnel. I don’t think I knew that Alias ever played with Davis even if for a short time. And then you’ve got Bartz and Jarrett from the Live-Evil period playing alongside Mtume. Most surprising is seeing Ndugu Leon Chancler in place of DeJohnette. It’s also the last time for what would be a period of eight years that we would hear Miles play some real trumpet. From ‘73 to ‘75 it was all bleats and chromatic throwaways. I know, because I went to some of the shows. And then he stopped playing and secluded himself in his apartment for almost five years. But this video is a real find.
