Back in the year 2,000, or 2001 I worked for a company in a very prestigious, White Upper Class town in Northern NJ. My coworker, who was Black, was pulled over by the police at least twice a week until they knew he worked for the investment company. His crime was Driving While Black. I can bet the police in that town are still the same way, even after 18+ years.

@Jim Elliott A lot of places down south black and white people are more prone to deal with each other. In a bigger city there's a white section and a black section, it's more segregated, therefore more racist.

@Jim Elliott Yeah, but even if they knew it was his, they'd pull him over to let him know that they still had power over him, muttering some nonsense about "uppity" or "knowing his place" in the process.

He was the Mozart of American music. His comment at the end; after the cop stops him in a Ferrari, 'it's not nice to go around every day thinking that shit' is, at it's base, the horror of racism; defensive and precarious day in and day. It's not good.

Yea, Miles and Coltrane were the American versions of Mozart and Beethoven. They are westerners too, but they are black.

I remember as a teenager reading how Miles and Dizzy (dressed in suits) were (in the 50s) were (after a gig) chased across a gravel parking lot and taken down by two White "Narcs." Tough to be fully creative when under crippling social pressure.

DeCuir, the Supreme Court rules that states cannot prohibit segregation 1883 - In the Civil Rights Cases the Supreme Court declares the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional May 18, 1896 - In Plessy v. Ferguson, the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the Separate Car Act. The ruling is a defeat for black citizens and solidifies the era of Jim Crow laws, which lasts until the 1960s. 1896-1950s - Jim Crow laws expand around the country, segregating schools, parks, businesses, sports, churches, hospitals, and many other areas of life. Blacks are also restricted from buying property in white sections of towns and cities. Many states throughout the country pass miscegenation laws, making it illegal for whites and persons of color to marry or cohabitate. Violence by the Ku Klux Klan and by lynch mobs prevent many blacks from protesting or resisting Jim Crow laws. 1964-68 --- Congress passes the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. 2020 - House passes bill establishing commission to study racial disparities affecting Black men, boys.
