All the parking garages are there because half the reason the Silver Line exists is to reduce traffic on the Dulles Toll Road. So there’s a lot of park and rides. The good news is that the train doing 50 mph past rush hour traffic is the best advertisement for transit ever. The giant vacant lots are basically areas where the transit oriented development will come in the future.

Just looking at Jeremy struggling with the machine...it makes me appreciate what I have on the LIRR and NYC Subway even more. Can't believe we're in a timeline where Dulles Airport station is actually open. Love the design of Dulles Airport. Pretty small world that St. Louis' iconic Gateway Arch, Dulles, and JFK's TWA Flight Center were all designed by the same architect, Eero Saarinen. Those mobile lounges may have started at Dulles, but Dulles isn't the only airport that still uses them! Philadelphia still uses them at Terminal A, as well as Montréal-Trudeau.

I was on the first westbound train out of Downtown Largo and rode all the way to Ashburn. In case you're curious, it took around an hour and 36 minutes. One interesting factoid about Ashburn though is that the Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority is going to run a bus from this station to Martinsburg, West Virginia daily. You can also see the mountains of West Virginia in the distance from the parking garage if you look closely enough.

This is like watching children on Christmas morning. I used to live in the area when the silver line was just a dream. If you wanted to go from DC to Fairfax County or Dulles Airport via public transit you had to take the Fairfax Connector, which was slow and filled with shady characters. This is way better.

I will give WMATA one thing, most of their suburban stations were built before the DC suburbs were even a thing and people just moved to wherever the train stations were. Hopefully apartments and offices are built next to these stations, some have already been built. But who would want to live in a TOD next to a highway....
@michaelimbesi2314
@michaelimbesi2314 Жыл бұрын
Well, if the TOD next to the highway is $200 a month cheaper than TOD not next to a highway, quite a lot of people will want to live there. It's all about value for your money. We have a housing crisis going on, and transit-accessible housing is very valuable to a lot of people.
@bugno9969
@bugno9969 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelimbesi2314 definitely. Theres so many jobs in DC right now and the city itself and the suburbs aren't doing enough to meet housing demand. Living next to a train that takes you to downtown DC gives you access to so many job opportunities and giving access to that to more people is always a good thing.

If there was ever a statement to describe all of the new stations on this line, and maybe a lot of other transit expansion projects in the U.S., it would undoubtedly be: *Just one more parking garage, bro.*

Agree with the “weird hallway” comment @15:16. The station was originally supposed to be underground and closer to the main terminal but in order to save money the decision was made to move it to its current location. Supposedly (urban legend/myth) there’s a shell of a subway station that was built underneath the main terminal, under baggage claim, that was built in the early 60’s when the airport opened. Not sure if it’s true, but an interesting legend for sure….

DC doing the Chinese thing of building a rail line to the middle of nowhere because they know it'll get developed and it'll be much easier to build the rail now, very out of character but certainly welcome. The problem is just how damn long the trip takes from the airport, like 50 minutes just to get to the downtown transfer stations.

Ironically they kind of neutered the bus to the Udvar Hazy Center of the Air and Space Museum (assuming you're talking about that) - it used to run every 20 minutes and go express from Wiehle-Reston East via Dulles. With the Silver Line extension, it now takes local roads and runs HOURLY :(

I was on the first train from the other end. It sucks that there's a massive highway next to all of these stations. Highway probably cost more, too. But it is an improvement and WMATA can find a new hopefully more useful improvement to make.

@@Leonard_Wilson Yeah, WMATA (most US transit agencies for that matter) have been chasing after the suburban commuter market for ages. High cost of expansion, low ridership gain. They should focus on frequency and integration with buses in denser parts of the city IMO. WMATA's ridership is still in the shitter since covid
