It's break time and a good opportunity to show you a track plan of the Mill Brook Railroad.
Pay no attention to the wood pellet stove noises.

Wow, great plan for the future for sure. I can dream too right? A string of tank cars loaded with freshly tapped sap pulled by an 0-6-0 or 2-8-0 coal fired steam engine working up the grade through the woods to the top. The thunderous exhaust echo's all over through the trees as she works hard to get that sap up that hill through the woods. :)

Nice dream plan. Your loading track/ramp is an excellent idea for visitors and yourself going to others layout. Avoiding so the risk of parachuteless drop of your 70.... Turntables at both ends are easier to build, maintain, and far cheapper than 3 switches required (plus rails) and far more compact than a wye . It´s tremendous mileage addition, lot of work and money. You can replace the chain of your chainsaw for a type designed to make planks of wood from your good dead trees for ties making. You can make or buy the tool required. Hundreds of ties from a single mature tree. An old steel drum filled with fresh ties and old engine oil. A good curing in summer heat. Your new ties are ready for installation. Far cheaper and not so much work than cut 2 X 4. The extension track won´t probably a grass headache, more leafs and small branches on track. C´mon beaver Aaron, let´s built it. Winter shouldn´t stop you, nor snow or ice......

I might be more ambitious about winter construction if building the railway were my full time job. I would need a pay raise, though. I guess I'll have to talk to the boss about that.

My strategy in the sugarbush is to use gravity sap lines to collection points next to the track and lock the sap up from there to go to the sugar house. My sugarbush is on a rather steep north slope, so I figure the railroad is the best way to access it.

It is exciting and dreadful at the same time. This is a much bigger task than building what's there now. I'm not sure I have enough material for the fills I'll need and I have no idea where the money is going to come from for all the rail I'll have to buy and the bridges I'll have to build. I won't let that stop me, though. It might slow the project down a lot but it won't stop me.

If you really wanted to you could build yourself a 4 axle maybe a 6 axle to try and better help yourself on the grade, heck maybe even rig up sanding.
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
Sanding, yes. Four and six axle power gets very expensive very quickly. They're out of my budget. I sell my little locomotives between $4000 and $5500, depending on how they're equipped. A GP40 or an SD40 would be more than twice that, which raises the barrier for entry into this hobby. One of the goals of this channel is to show people what they can do with one or two little locomotives and a few cars in their backyard. As hobbies go, I aim to spread the word that backyard railroading is big, but practical. It's like having a UTV or an ATV that you always stay on the trail with, but you can use it year round, regardless of weather, and it'll never get it stuck in the mud.

I was asked to rebuild the station for a new owner after the previous manager left it for dead. I've been there since February, 2017. why is 3.5% so bad for you, engine power? 1to1 go to 5% and pull hundreds of cars
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
Lack of traction is the issue. Full size railroads do not pull hundreds of cars over a 5% grade all at once. You have to take only what you can control with the locomotives you have. For an example: here is a Southern Railway training video for crews who were training to run on Saluda grade, which is greater than 5% in places. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b69xdbBpurbUnI0.html
