Millinery’s best kept secret | Turbans, pleats & the bias

What is the bias? Why is it important to millinery? What can you do with it? Find out the answers in this video. I shall be showing how to make a pin tuck turban and also how to use bias pleats to cover a buckram foundation. Shapes explored in this video include a front twist turban, pillbox and a teardrop. You can use any shape buckram that you like, including: calot half hat, beret, percher, button, teardrop. You’ll need a blocking net foundation for the turban, as well as a sewing machine.

Fabric (silk dupion, cotton or jersey) - 1m
Fabric scissors
Set square or quilting ruler
Soap (or your preferred fabric marking method)
Iron (medium dry setting for silk)
Sewing machine (with appropriate needle size to your fabric)
Blocking net turban foundation
Pins
Quilting guide bar (optional)
Threads (to match your fabric, and your foundation)
Needles
Thimble
Buckram Foundation

This tutorial is fabulous and I can't wait to make one (or 5!). While I love my stretch turbans, I would prefer them to have a hat base so they look more substantial and stay on better.

I would love a tutorial on smaller 1950s/1960s headpieces like teardrops or Juliet caps. I’ve seen tutorials of just free-wiring so to speak but I was wondering if there was a better way? Thank you! 😁

Hi Liv, I wouldn't say there is a better or worse way - just different way. I will see if I can work something into my video schedule for you 😊 Also, do you perhaps mean calot half hats? As I tend to think of Juliet caps as 1920s/30s bridal attire.

I love the orange piece with feathers and the bouclé pillbox 😍. I have some leftover bouclé from 3 outfits I made and I think I should put them to a good use 🤔.

Thank you! Small hats are a great use for left over fabric! If you have enough you can even play with it and see if you prefer it on the straight grain or the bias 😊

I love watching your “millinery shorts” especially the orange pleated tear drop. I guess you’ve placed your strips on a bought tear drop shape. I want to make it more like a calot ( I love the sage green velvet one I see in your videos) What base would you use for a calot ?

Thanks for such a helpful and comprehensive video tutorial. Wish I had known what you have taught before starting out on my current hat in progress which is somewhat turban like which I have been struggling with as I have been freestyle hand pleating bias strips on a pinnable poupee head and then doing invisible stitching here and there to hold it in place which is not as easy or as effective as your technique seems to be.

Hi Lynlee, your project sounds interesting! I think both techniques have merit - they will give different looking results. I've never tried a hand draped turban myself as I always get put off by the effort it seems to take. 😊

It's a little outdated, but it gives a good overview on materials and processes. I bought mine on Amazon. It is cork inside, so that you can pin into it easily.

Hello, I use silk dupion. Chinese silk dupion is more flowey, and indian silk dupion is stiffer. Any lightweight fabric will work.

is blocking netting the same as crinoline.

Hi Ingrid, it depends on what you define as crinoline. I think here in the UK the terminology is different than in the USA. Crin in the UK is horse hair braid, now made using polyester - making it very different to blocking net indeed! It's used for making fancy trims for hats. I have read that in the USA "crinoline" sometimes refers to a bias cut stiffened cotton strip of fabric used to hem skirts. But I am afraid I don't know any more about that. I hope this helps! 😀
